The initial physical evidence of the Baptism in the Holy Spirit is speaking in other tongues as the Spirit of God gives utterance.
The initial physical evidence of the Baptism in the Holy Spirit is speaking in tongues (glossolalia). This biblical sign, first seen on the Day of Pentecost in Acts 2, serves as an outward confirmation of an inward spiritual empowerment. It is distinct from the spiritual gift of tongues used in public worship, acting instead as a uniform signal that a believer has received the promised gift of the Father.
Biblical Foundation
To understand why we believe speaking in tongues is the initial evidence, we have to look at the patterns established in the New Testament. In the Book of Acts, every time people were filled with the Spirit, there was an observable, physical sign.
Acts 2:4 (NIV) "All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them."
Acts 10:44-46 (NIV) "While Peter was still speaking these words, the Holy Spirit came on all who heard the message. The circumcised believers who had come with Peter were astonished that the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out even on Gentiles. For they heard them speaking in tongues and praising God."
Acts 19:6 (NIV) "When Paul placed his hands on them, the Holy Spirit came on them, and they spoke in tongues and prophesied."

Pastoral Insight and Encouragement
When we talk about the Baptism in the Holy Spirit, it can sometimes feel a bit overwhelming or even mysterious. But at its heart, this experience is a gift from a loving Father who wants to empower His children. Within the Assemblies of God, we identify this as "Truth #8," and it’s a core part of our "Evergreen Faith."
You might be asking, "Why do I need a physical sign?"
Well, think about it this way: God loves to provide assurance. When you get married, you wear a ring. When you graduate, you receive a diploma. These are physical signs of a spiritual or legal reality. Speaking in tongues is the "initial" sign, the starting point, that shows you have entered into this new dimension of spiritual life.
It’s important to remember that the Baptism in the Holy Spirit is a separate experience from salvation. If you’ve placed your faith in Jesus, you already have the Holy Spirit living inside you! But the Baptism is an immersion, an overflowing, that provides power for witnessing and service.
The Pattern in Acts
As we saw in the verses above, the early church recognized this gift by what they heard. In Acts 10, Peter and his friends knew the Gentiles had received the Spirit because they "heard them speaking in tongues." It wasn't a guess or a vague feeling; it was a clear, audible evidence.
This pattern is consistent. Whether it was the 120 in the Upper Room, the household of Cornelius, or the believers in Ephesus, the result was the same. They were filled, and they spoke.

Evidence vs. The Gift of Tongues
One of the most common questions I get is about the difference between the "evidence" and the "gift of tongues" mentioned in 1 Corinthians 12.
It’s a great question!
Think of it like this: All citizens of a country might speak the national language (the evidence), but only a few might be chosen to give a public address at a state event (the gift).
The initial evidence of tongues is for every believer who is baptized in the Spirit. It is a personal prayer language for edification. The "Gift of Tongues" mentioned in the lists of spiritual gifts is specifically for public use in a church service, usually coupled with the gift of interpretation to build up the whole body.
Why Does it Matter?
The goal isn't just to speak in tongues. The goal is the power.
In Acts 1:8, Jesus said, "But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses..."
The tongues are the evidence that the power has arrived. This empowerment helps us live a holy life, share the Gospel with boldness, and experience a deeper level of worship. It’s like moving from a flickering candle to a floodlight in your spiritual walk.

How to Receive
If you haven’t experienced this yet, don’t feel pressured or anxious. God is a giver!
Ask: Jesus said the Father gives the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him.
Believe: Trust that God wants to fulfill His promise in your life.
Receive: As you pray, yield your tongue to the Spirit. It’s a step of faith. You do the speaking, and He provides the utterance.
It’s a beautiful, life-changing experience that opens up so many doors in your walk with God. We talk about these kinds of foundations often in our Bible Study Club, and I’d love to see you there.
A Prayer for You
Heavenly Father, thank You for the promise of the Holy Spirit. I thank You that You haven't left us to do life in our own strength. I pray for my friend reading this right now. If they are seeking more of You, I ask that You would fill them to overflowing. Grant them the gift of the Holy Spirit with the evidence of speaking in tongues. Give them boldness to share Your love and power to live for You every day. In Jesus' name, Amen.
