A Message from FA Memphis
The Baptism of the Holy Spirit is a distinct, empowering experience available to every believer after salvation. It is an immersion into God’s presence that provides spiritual power for Christian life and global witnessing. According to Assemblies of God doctrine, this gift is the "promise of the Father," enabling believers to live boldly, serve effectively, and experience the fullness of the Spirit’s work.
Bible Verses
Acts 1:4-5 (NIV) "Do not leave Jerusalem, but wait for the gift my Father promised, which you have heard me speak about. For John baptized with water, but in a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit."
Acts 1:8 (NIV) "But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth."
Acts 2:4 (NIV) "All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them."
Matthew 3:11 (NIV) "I baptize you with water for repentance. But after me comes one who is more powerful than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire."
Understanding the Baptism of the Holy Spirit
When we talk about the "Baptism of the Holy Spirit," we are diving into one of the most exciting and vital parts of the Christian walk. If you’ve ever felt like you were trying to live out your faith on a "low battery," this message is for you.
The word "baptism" itself comes from a word that means "to dip" or "to immerse." Think of it like a sponge being dropped into a bucket of water. The sponge isn't just near the water; it is completely submerged, soaked through, and filled to capacity. That is what Jesus wants for us, not just to have the Holy Spirit near us, but to be completely immersed in His presence and power.
In the Assemblies of God tradition, we believe this is a specific experience that is meant for every follower of Jesus. It isn’t just for "super Christians" or those in full-time ministry. It’s for the night-shift worker, the stay-at-home parent, the student, and the seeker. It is God’s way of "leveling up" our ability to live for Him in a world that can often feel overwhelming.

Is This Different From Being Saved?
One of the most common questions people ask is: "Didn't I get the Holy Spirit when I was saved?" The answer is a resounding yes! When you ask Jesus into your heart, the Holy Spirit comes to live inside you. He is the one who convicts us of sin and brings us into a relationship with God.
However, the Bible describes the Baptism in the Holy Spirit as a distinct experience that follows salvation. Think of it this way: salvation is like having a glass of water to drink so you can live. The Baptism of the Holy Spirit is like being thrown into the middle of the ocean. In the first, the water is in you; in the second, you are in the water.
In the book of Acts, we see many examples where people had already believed in Jesus but were later prayed for to receive this specific "filling" of the Spirit. It’s an addition to your walk with God, providing a new dimension of spiritual life. If you want to dive deeper into how this relates to our identity, you might find our post on what it means to be Pentecostal really helpful.
The Purpose: Power to Witness
Why would God want to immerse us in His Spirit? It’s not just for a "spiritual high" or a private emotional moment. The primary purpose, as Jesus said in Acts 1:8, is power.
The Greek word used for power is dunamis, which is where we get the word "dynamite." This isn't just a quiet, internal strength; it’s an explosive, world-changing capability. This power is specifically given so that we can be "witnesses."
A witness isn't just someone who knows the truth; it’s someone who tells the truth. The Baptism of the Holy Spirit gives us the boldness to share our faith, the wisdom to know what to say, and the spiritual "engine" to keep going when things get tough. Whether you are talking to a neighbor or reaching people across the globe through safe digital tools, the Spirit provides the energy you need.

What Should I Expect?
At Boundless Online Church, we follow the biblical pattern seen on the Day of Pentecost. In the book of Acts, when believers were filled with the Spirit, there was often an outward, physical sign. We believe the initial physical evidence of this baptism is speaking in tongues.
Now, I know that can sound a bit intimidating or confusing if you’ve never experienced it.
But think of it as a "prayer language": a way for your spirit to communicate directly with God beyond the limits of your human vocabulary. It’s a gift designed to build you up and help you pray when you don't even know what words to use. We’ve written more about why speaking in tongues is still relevant today if you want to explore the "why" behind it.
Beyond that initial sign, you can expect a deeper love for the Bible, a more vibrant prayer life, and a renewed passion for reaching people who don't know Jesus yet. It’s like the lights being turned from "dim" to "full brightness" in your spiritual house.
How Do I Receive This Gift?
The best part about the Baptism of the Holy Spirit is that it is a gift. You don’t have to earn it. You don’t have to be perfect. You just have to be hungry for more of God.
Ask: Jesus said in Luke 11:13 that the Father loves to give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him.
Believe: Trust that God wants to empower you. This isn't a gift for a select few; it’s the "promise of the Father" for you.
Wait and Receive: Sometimes it happens instantly, and sometimes it happens during a season of waiting with purpose. Just open your heart and tell God, "I want everything You have for me."

Living a Spirit-Empowered Life
Once you receive this baptism, it’s not a "one and done" event. It’s the beginning of a lifestyle. We need to be "continually filled" with the Spirit.
For many of us: especially those working the night shift or facing high-stress roles: the Baptism of the Holy Spirit is what keeps us grounded. It’s that faith at 3 AM that reminds us we aren't alone. It’s the strength to keep going when we feel burned out. It’s the peace that passes understanding when the world is in chaos.
If you are a Christian leader or looking to grow in your ministry, this empowerment is the foundation of everything we do. It’s why so many leaders are turning to podcast communities and digital spaces: because the Spirit can move through a screen just as powerfully as He moves in a physical building.

A Prayer for the Holy Spirit
"Heavenly Father, thank You for the gift of Your Son, Jesus, and the gift of Your Holy Spirit. I am hungry for more of You. I ask right now that You would baptize me in the Holy Spirit. Fill me to overflowing. Give me the power to be a witness for You in my home, my workplace, and my community. I open my heart to receive everything You have promised. In Jesus' name, Amen."
