New Believers
In Assemblies of God teaching, the initial physical evidence of the baptism in the Holy Spirit is speaking in other tongues as the Spirit gives utterance (Acts 2:4). This experience is distinct from salvation and is given for power to witness and serve (Acts 1:8).
The Question
What Is the “Initial Evidence” of the Baptism in the Holy Spirit?
The Short Answer
In the Assemblies of God, we believe the initial physical sign that accompanies the baptism in the Holy Spirit is speaking in tongues as the Spirit gives utterance (Acts 2:4). This empowering is separate from salvation and is given so believers can witness and serve with God’s power (Acts 1:8).
Let's Go Deeper
If you've been around FA Memphis or Boundless Online Church for a little while, you've probably heard people talk about being “Spirit-filled.” Maybe you’ve wondered, “What does that actually look like when I’m at work, at home, or stressed out?” I love that question—because Scripture never treats the Holy Spirit as a Sunday-only topic. He’s for real life.
What the Bible Shows Us
The clearest picture of a Spirit-empowered life shows up in Acts. Jesus told His followers:
“But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me…” (Acts 1:8, KJV)
Then at Pentecost, the Spirit came in a powerful way:
“And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.” (Acts 2:4, KJV)
In the Assemblies of God (Fundamental Truth #7), we teach that the baptism in the Holy Spirit is an empowerment Jesus gives believers, and that it’s distinct from salvation. The “why” is practical: power to witness and serve.

What “Spirit-Filled” Looks Like on a Normal Day
When I say “Spirit-filled,” I’m not talking about being hyped up or pretending everything is fine. I’m talking about the Holy Spirit strengthening me in everyday moments—so my life looks more like Jesus and my courage grows when it matters.
Here are a few practical “daily life” markers:
Boldness to witness (Acts 1:8): I’m more willing to speak up about Jesus with humility and love.
Help in prayer: When I don’t know what to pray, the Spirit helps me keep praying (see Romans 8:26).
Power to serve: I’m empowered to love people practically—show up, forgive, give, help, and stay steady.
Growth in Christlike character: Over time, my attitude and choices change as I yield to the Spirit (see Galatians 5:22–23).
And because we’re Pentecostal, we also believe the Holy Spirit still moves supernaturally today. In AG teaching, the baptism in the Holy Spirit is accompanied by speaking in other tongues as the Spirit gives utterance (Acts 2:4). But the goal isn’t tongues for tongues’ sake—the goal is empowered witness and Spirit-led living.
Why This Matters for You (and Why We Talk About It)
You might be thinking, “Okay, but why does this matter to me today?”
Because “Spirit-filled” isn’t a label—it’s help. It’s heaven’s strength for real life. The same Holy Spirit who empowered the early church still empowers believers now.
And just to keep it clear and guilt-free: salvation is by grace through faith in Jesus (Ephesians 2:8–9). In the Assemblies of God, we also teach that Jesus baptizes believers in the Holy Spirit as a distinct empowerment for witness and service (Acts 1:8; Fundamental Truth #7).
WHY (FA Memphis + Boundless): At FA Memphis, we want to see people in Memphis and the 901 walk in Spirit-empowered everyday discipleship. Through Boundless Online Church, we want the same thing for people who can’t be here in person—real community and real growth, from anywhere.

Common Misconceptions (Let’s Clear Them Up)
“Spirit-filled means I’m always emotional or ‘on’ spiritually.”
No. Spirit-filled doesn’t mean I never struggle. It means I’m learning to rely on the Spirit in the struggle—asking for help, choosing obedience, and letting God strengthen me.
“Spirit-filled is only for church services.”
Not at all. Acts 1:8 is about everyday mission—home, workplace, school, relationships, and serving people in real needs.
“If I’m not perfect, I can’t be Spirit-filled.”
You don’t have to be perfect to come close to Jesus. Sanctification is a process. The Holy Spirit helps us grow over time.
“Pentecostals only talk about tongues.”
We do believe the baptism in the Holy Spirit is accompanied by speaking in tongues (Acts 2:4), but the point is bigger: Jesus empowers believers for witness and service (Acts 1:8). That empowerment shows up in daily obedience, bold love, prayer, and serving others.
What This Looks Like in Everyday Life (Simple Practices)
Here are a few practical ways I’ve seen “Spirit-filled” living show up in real life:
Start the day with surrender. A simple prayer: “Holy Spirit, lead me today.”
Pause before you react. Ask for wisdom before you snap, spiral, or shut down.
Serve someone on purpose. The Spirit empowers us to love in action—small but real.
Pray when you feel stuck. When words are hard, keep praying anyway. (Romans 8:26)
Be ready to witness. Not pushy—just honest. When God opens a door, walk through it.
And yes—if you’ve been baptized in the Holy Spirit, praying in tongues can be part of that daily strengthening. But whether you’re brand new to all this or you’ve been walking with Jesus a long time, the invitation is the same: don’t do life alone—lean on the Spirit.

Your Next Step (Memphis and Beyond)
If you’re a new believer and you’re thinking, “I want to live Spirit-filled, but I’m not sure where to start,” start simple:
Ask daily for the Spirit’s help. (Luke 11:13)
Open your Bible and obey one clear thing. Small obedience builds real strength.
Get around Spirit-filled community. Growth happens faster with people.
