Faith Foundations: How Do True Love and Biblical Truth Work Together?

Faith Foundations: How Do True Love and Biblical Truth Work Together?

True love and biblical truth are not opposing forces; they are two sides of the same coin. In the Christian faith, love without truth is mere sentimentality that can lead people astray, while truth without love is a harsh legalism that pushes people away. Biblical love requires us to stand firm on the truth of God's Word because the most loving thing we can do is share the reality of Jesus Christ and His teachings.

Standing Firm in a Changing World

Maintaining your convictions while showing genuine kindness is one of the greatest challenges for believers today. Whether you are part of our Memphis online church community or watching from across the globe, you’ve likely felt the pressure to choose one over the other.

The year 2026 has brought these tensions into sharp focus. In Europe, the ongoing legal battles of individuals like Päivi Räsänen have highlighted the cost of standing for traditional biblical truth. After her 2026 Supreme Court conviction in Finland regarding a decades-old church pamphlet, the world has seen that religious freedom is increasingly fragile. These events remind us that the call to "stand firm" is not just a theological concept, it is a modern necessity.

At Boundless Online Church, we see ourselves as a bridge for those who are homebound, traveling, or hesitant to step into a physical building. We believe that distance shouldn't stop you from growing in a faith that is both deeply loving and unapologetically truthful.

What Does the Bible Say About Love and Truth?

The Scriptures provide a clear blueprint for how these two virtues interact. We are never asked to sacrifice one for the sake of the other.

  • Ephesians 4:15: "Instead, speaking the truth in love, we will grow to become in every respect the mature body of him who is the head, that is, Christ."

  • John 1:14: "The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth."

  • 1 Corinthians 13:6: "Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth."

  • Psalm 85:10: "Love and faithfulness meet together; righteousness and peace kiss each other."

5 Ways to Balance Love and Conviction

How do we actually live this out when the world demands we compromise? Here are five practical ways to stay grounded:

  1. Anchor in the Word: You cannot stand for a truth you do not know. Daily reading of the Bible ensures that your convictions are shaped by God’s Spirit rather than cultural trends.

  2. Check Your Heart: Before you speak truth, ask yourself, "Do I genuinely love the person I’m talking to?" Truth delivered without love is often ignored; love delivered without truth is often unhelpful.

  3. Prepare for Pushback: As we see in the 2026 religious freedom cases, standing firm can be costly. Jesus told us the world might not understand us, but we can take heart knowing He has overcome the world (John 16:33).

  4. Stay Connected to Community: It is much harder to stand alone. Join an online Bible study or a virtual small group to find strength and encouragement from other believers.

  5. Focus on the Person, Not Just the Argument: Jesus always saw the individual. Whether it was the woman at the well or the Pharisee in the night, He addressed their hearts with perfect grace and perfect truth.

Why Biblical Truth is the Highest Form of Love

Think of it this way: If a bridge is structurally unsound, the most "loving" thing an engineer can do is tell the truth and close the bridge until it is fixed. Ignoring the cracks to be "nice" would be disastrous.

In the same way, biblical truth identifies the "cracks" in our lives, sin, brokenness, and separation from God, not to condemn us, but to lead us to the only one who can fix them: Jesus Christ. When we stand firm on biblical truth, we are pointing people toward the only path that leads to eternal life and true flourishing.

For many in Memphis and beyond, the digital space has become a sanctuary. If you are struggling with how to navigate your faith in a public or professional setting, know that you aren't alone. We are here to help you navigate those conversations with the "calm power" that comes from the Holy Spirit.

A Short Prayer for Boldness

Lord, thank You for being the perfect example of grace and truth. Help me to stand firm on Your Word without losing my heart for people. Give me the wisdom to know when to speak and the love to speak it well. May my life reflect Your light in a way that draws others to You. Amen.
