If you’ve spent any time around Christian circles or flicked through a Bible, you’ve probably run into the phrase “born again.” For some, it sounds like a beautiful fresh start. For others, it sounds a bit… strange. Maybe even a little confusing.
Does it mean you have to start your life over from scratch? Is it a physical thing? A club you join?
At Boundless Online Church, we get these questions all the time. We believe that faith shouldn’t be a mystery wrapped in confusing jargon. It should be a clear, welcoming path to a relationship with the Creator.
We help people meet Jesus and grow in faith online. Whether you are on a break during a late-night shift, resting in a hospital bed, or seeking God from a place where it isn't safe to go to a physical building, this conversation is for you.
Let’s pull back the curtain on what it actually means to be born again.
The Conversation That Changed Everything
The term "born again" isn't something a modern marketing team came up with. It actually comes directly from a conversation Jesus had about 2,000 years ago.
A man named Nicodemus, who was a very religious and respected leader, came to see Jesus under the cover of night. He had questions. He saw the miracles Jesus was doing and knew there was something different about Him.
Jesus didn’t give him a list of rules or a new philosophy. Instead, He said something that stopped Nicodemus in his tracks: "Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born again he cannot see the kingdom of God" (John 3:3).
Nicodemus was just as confused as many people are today. He asked, "How can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter a second time into his mother's womb and be born?"
Jesus explained that He wasn't talking about a physical birth. He was talking about a spiritual one.

It’s a Spiritual Reset
When we are born the first time, we enter the world physically. We get a name, a family, and a physical body. But the Bible teaches that, spiritually, we are separated from God because of sin.
Think of it like a smartphone that has the hardware but is missing the operating system. It exists, but it isn’t doing what it was designed to do.
Being "born again" is the moment the Spirit of God brings your soul to life. It’s a spiritual rebirth where the "old you": the person living apart from God: dies, and a "new you" is born.
In the Assemblies of God tradition, we look at this through the lens of our 16 Fundamental Truths. Specifically, Truth #4 talks about the Salvation of Man. It explains that salvation is received through repentance toward God and faith toward the Lord Jesus Christ.
By the washing of regeneration and renewing of the Holy Spirit, being justified by grace through faith, we become heirs of God.
That sounds like a lot of "churchy" words, but it boils down to this: God does a deep-clean of your soul and gives you a brand-new start.
The Inward Evidence
How do you know if it has happened? Is there a lightning bolt? A feeling?
While some people have a very emotional experience, for many, it’s a quiet, profound realization. The Bible says that when you are born again, you receive "inward evidence."
This evidence shows up in a few key ways:
A New Heart
Your desires start to shift. Things that used to satisfy you might not feel the same anymore. You start to care about things God cares about: like love, justice, and kindness. You aren't perfect, but your "want-to" has changed.
A New Identity
You go from being a stranger to God to being His child. This is huge. It means your worth isn't tied to your job, your bank account, or your past mistakes. Your identity is now "Child of God."
A New Mind
You start to see the world differently. Instead of just looking out for number one, you start to see people through the eyes of Jesus. You start to find wisdom in the Bible that actually makes sense for your daily life.

Why Do We Need It?
You might be thinking, "I’m a pretty good person. Why do I need to be born again?"
The reality is that none of us are "good enough" to bridge the gap between ourselves and a perfect, holy God. We’ve all made mistakes, harbored bitterness, or lived for ourselves.
Being born again isn't about becoming "better." It’s about becoming "new."
It’s the difference between trying to fix a broken car and getting a brand-new engine. We don’t just need a tune-up; we need a transformation. This transformation is what allows us to enter into a relationship with God and, eventually, spend eternity with Him.
A Gift for Everyone, Everywhere
One of the most beautiful things about being born again is that it isn’t reserved for people who have it all together. It’s for everyone.
At Boundless Online Church, we speak to people in all walks of life. Maybe you are a shift worker reading this at 3:00 AM on your break. Maybe you are a caregiver who hasn't been able to leave the house in months. Or maybe you live in a part of the world where you have to keep your faith a secret.
The Holy Spirit doesn't need a church building to reach you. You can experience this spiritual rebirth right where you are.
It’s not about a ceremony or a ritual. It’s about a sincere conversation between you and God. It involves:
Repentance: Acknowledging you’ve been heading the wrong way and deciding to turn toward God.
Faith: Believing that Jesus Christ died for your sins and rose again to give you life.

Living the New Life
Once you are born again, the journey is just beginning. Just like a physical baby needs milk to grow, a spiritual "newborn" needs nourishment.
This is why we focus so much on community and resources here. If you're looking for ways to grow, you might check out our Daily Parent Devotionals or join one of our online groups.
Growing in faith involves talking to God (prayer), reading His Word, and connecting with other believers who can walk beside you. You don't have to do this alone. Even if you are physically isolated, you are part of a global family.
Do You Have Questions?
We know this is a big topic. If you're sitting there thinking, "I want this, but I don't know where to start," or "I still have a hundred questions," that is completely okay.
Faith is a journey, not a destination. We invite you to explore, ask the hard questions, and seek the truth. You might find it helpful to listen to our Connected Faith Podcast where we dive deeper into these kinds of life questions.
If you’ve never made that decision to follow Jesus and experience this rebirth, today can be your "Day One." You don't need to wait until you're "good enough." You just need to come as you are.
