From Pages to Pictures: Finding God in the Stories We Tell

Updated: 4 days ago

Have you ever closed a book, wiped away a tear, and felt like God just whispered something directly to your heart? Or maybe you've watched a movie that moved you so deeply you couldn't stop thinking about it for days?

Friend, you're not imagining things. God speaks through stories: and He always has.

Welcome home to another Friend Friday here at Boundless Online Church! Today, Pastor Dr. Layne McDonald invites us to explore something beautiful: the sacred gift of storytelling and how it connects us to our Creator, to each other, and to the bigger picture God is painting with our lives.

Why Stories Matter to God (And to Us)

Think about it for a moment. When Jesus wanted to teach the most profound spiritual truths, what did He do? He told stories. Parables about lost sheep, prodigal sons, mustard seeds, and wise builders. He didn't hand out theological textbooks: He painted pictures with words.

There's a reason for that.

Stories bypass our defenses. They sneak past our cynicism and land right in our hearts. A good story doesn't just inform us; it transforms us. It helps us see ourselves in characters we'd never expect to relate to. It shows us redemption is possible, love is real, and hope never dies.

Here's your biblical affirmation for today:

"For we are God's masterpiece, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God

prepared in advance for us to do." : Ephesians 2:10

You are not a random collection of moments. Your life is a story God is writing: and it's a masterpiece.

Finding Divine Fingerprints in Everyday Stories

You don't have to read explicitly "Christian" books or watch faith-based films to encounter God in storytelling. (Though those are wonderful too!) God's truth echoes through all kinds of narratives because He is the Author of truth itself.

Here are five ways to spot God's fingerprints in the stories around you:

1. Look for Redemption Arcs

Almost every great story involves a character who was lost and then found, broken and then healed, failing and then rising. That's not a coincidence: that's the Gospel pattern woven into the fabric of human storytelling. When you see a character transformed by love, sacrifice, or grace, you're seeing an echo of what Jesus does for us.

2. Notice the Longing for Home

From The Lord of the Rings to countless family dramas, stories often center on a deep ache to belong somewhere safe and loving. That longing? It's homesickness for heaven. C.S. Lewis once wrote that if we find in ourselves desires nothing in this world can satisfy, the most probable explanation is that we were made for another world.

3. Celebrate Sacrificial Love

When a character gives everything for someone else: think of any hero who lays down their life for others: your heart swells because you're witnessing a shadow of the Greatest Story ever told. Jesus laid down His life for you. Every sacrificial hero in fiction is pointing back to Him.

4. Recognize the Battle Between Good and Evil

Stories thrive on conflict. Light versus darkness. Justice versus injustice. That tension isn't just entertaining: it reflects the real spiritual battle happening all around us. And spoiler alert: in God's story, good wins. Every. Single. Time.

5. Pay Attention to Unlikely Heroes

God loves using the overlooked, the underestimated, the "least of these." David was the youngest brother. Gideon was hiding in fear. Moses had a speech impediment. When you see an unlikely hero rise up in a story, remember: God might be reminding you that He's not done with you either.

Your Story Matters Too

Here's something Pastor Dr. Layne McDonald often reminds us: Your testimony is one of the most powerful stories you'll ever tell.

You might think your story isn't dramatic enough, inspiring enough, or "Christian" enough to matter. But that's simply not true. Every moment you've walked through: every struggle, every victory, every quiet Tuesday afternoon when you chose faith over fear: is part of a story God is using.

When you share your journey with someone else, you're offering them hope. You're saying, "If God did this for me, He can do it for you too."

And guess what? Boundless Online Church is full of people who want to hear your story and share theirs with you. That's what community is all about.

5 Ways to Use Storytelling to Strengthen Your Faith and Friendships

Since it's Friend Friday, let's get practical! Here are five ways you can harness the power of story to grow closer to God and the people you love:

1. Start a Book Club or Movie Night

Invite friends (online or in person!) to read a book or watch a film together, then discuss the spiritual themes you noticed. You'll be amazed at the conversations that unfold.

2. Journal Your Own Story

Write down the moments when God showed up in your life. Not for anyone else: just for you. When doubt creeps in, you'll have written proof of His faithfulness.

3. Share Your Testimony in a Boundless Group

We have groups for every interest and life stage. Find one that fits you and share a piece of your journey. You never know who needs to hear exactly what you've been through.

4. Read the Bible as the Story It Is

The Bible isn't just a rule book or a collection of verses: it's one grand narrative of God pursuing His people. Try reading it that way. Follow the thread from Genesis to Revelation and watch the story unfold.

5. Ask Someone About Their Story

This Friend Friday, reach out to someone and simply ask, "What's your story?" Then listen. Really listen. It's one of the kindest things you can do for another human being.
