Have you ever felt that quiet nudge in your heart: the one that whispers, "Maybe there's more you're meant to do"? Maybe you've been leading a small group, volunteering at church, or simply finding yourself drawn to deeper conversations about faith. If you're reading this, chances are you're curious about what it takes to step into ministry within the Assemblies of God.
Friend, you're in the right place. Let me walk you through something beautiful: the Pathways classes designed to prepare everyday people, people just like you, for meaningful ministry in the AG.
What Are Pathways Classes?
Think of Pathways as your roadmap to ministry preparation. These aren't dusty, intimidating seminary courses locked behind ivy-covered walls. Instead, they're accessible, flexible training programs created specifically to equip you with the biblical knowledge, theological foundation, and practical skills you need to serve effectively.
The Assemblies of God has partnered with several schools and organizations to offer multiple pathways to ministry credentials. Whether you're a busy parent, a full-time worker, or someone who simply can't relocate for traditional schooling, there's an option designed with your life in mind.
The best part? You don't have to have it all figured out to start. These classes meet you where you are and help you grow from there.

Understanding the Three Levels of AG Credentials
Before diving into specific programs, let's talk about how credentialing works in the Assemblies of God. There are three levels of ministerial credentials, and Pathways classes are structured to help you progress through each one:
Certified Minister
This is your entry point. The Certified level is perfect for those just beginning to explore their calling. You'll learn foundational truths about the Bible, AG doctrines, and what ministry looks like in practice. It's designed for people serving in supportive ministry roles: think youth leaders, worship team members, or outreach coordinators.
Licensed Minister
Ready to take the next step? The Licensed level prepares you for more hands-on ministry leadership. At this stage, you're diving deeper into theology, pastoral care, and the practical aspects of leading others spiritually. Many associate pastors and ministry directors hold licensed credentials.
Ordained Minister
This is the highest level of AG credentialing. Ordination signifies that you've demonstrated maturity, knowledge, and a proven track record in ministry. Senior pastors, missionaries, and established ministry leaders typically pursue ordination.
Each level builds on the previous one, creating a clear and achievable progression. You're not expected to sprint: this is a journey, and every step matters.
Pathway Options: Find What Fits Your Life
Here's something beautiful about the Assemblies of God approach to ministry training: flexibility. There's no one-size-fits-all path. Let me introduce you to some of the primary options available.

Global Church Divinity School (GCDS)
If self-paced learning sounds like a dream, GCDS might be your match. The Assemblies of God Ministry Track through GCDS includes 28 total courses spread across all three credential levels. Each level combines coursework with a hands-on internship, so you're not just learning theory: you're applying it in real ministry settings.
The beauty of GCDS? You set your own pace. No need to relocate. No crushing student debt. Just intentional, step-by-step growth on your schedule.
Vanguard University School of Ministry
For those who want flexibility with the added benefit of earning college credit, Vanguard's online credentialing pathway is worth exploring. Their asynchronous courses cover biblical study, theology, leadership, and ministry practice: all aligned with AG credentialing requirements.
Here's a bonus: the credits you earn can count toward a Bachelor of Arts in Theology. So if you're thinking long-term about your education, this pathway pulls double duty.
MinistryStudiesOnline (MSO)
Do you already have a sense of where your calling is leading you? MSO offers specialized tracks including Pastoral, Youth, KidMin (children's ministry), Global missions, and even Recovery Studies.
Completing the Pastoral Studies Track fulfills the educational requirements for Licensed credentials, while additional courses can prepare you for Ordination. If you're exploring Certified level credentials, any MSO track completion will get you there.
This is a fantastic option if you want targeted training for a specific ministry area.
SoCal School of Ministry
For our Spanish-speaking friends: or anyone in Southern California looking for in-person community: the SoCal School of Ministry offers classes in both English and Spanish. You can earn up to 27 academic units toward a BA through Vanguard University's School of Professional Studies while completing your credentialing requirements.
Berean School of the Bible and Other Options
Additional programs like Berean School of the Bible, LEAD School of Ministry, and Pathway Training provide even more choices. Many of these are fully online, self-paced, and designed without rigid due dates: perfect for those juggling work, family, and ministry responsibilities.
You can explore all official pathways and endorsed schools at ag.org.
What to Expect in Pathways Classes
So what will you actually learn? While each program has its own curriculum, here's a general overview of what Pathways classes cover:
Biblical Foundation You'll study Scripture deeply: not just reading it, but understanding context, history, and application. Expect courses on Old and New Testament surveys, hermeneutics (how to interpret the Bible), and key theological themes.
Assemblies of God Doctrine Understanding what the AG believes and why matters. You'll explore the 16 Fundamental Truths, the role of the Holy Spirit, and distinctive AG positions on topics like salvation, healing, and the second coming of Christ.
Practical Ministry Skills Theory is great, but ministry happens in the real world. Expect training in preaching, pastoral care, leadership development, church administration, and even conflict resolution.
Internship and Mentorship Most pathways include hands-on internship components. You'll serve alongside experienced ministers, gaining practical wisdom that textbooks simply can't teach.

Who Should Consider Pathways Classes?
Here's the honest truth: Pathways classes aren't just for people who want to become senior pastors. They're for anyone sensing a call to serve God's people more intentionally.
You might be a great fit if:
You feel drawn to vocational ministry but aren't sure where to start
You're already serving in your local church and want deeper training
You're exploring whether pastoral ministry, missions, youth work, or chaplaincy is right for you
You want to grow spiritually and theologically, even if full-time ministry isn't your goal
You need flexible, affordable education that works with your current life responsibilities
Sound familiar? Then maybe this is your next step.
How to Get Started
Taking the first step can feel intimidating, but it doesn't have to be. Here's a simple action plan:
You're Not Alone on This Journey
If there's one thing we want you to know, it's this: ministry isn't a solo endeavor. The Assemblies of God has built these pathways because they believe in raising up equipped, Spirit-filled leaders for the local church and beyond.
Whether you're in Memphis, across the country, or anywhere in the world, you have access to training that can prepare you for the calling God has placed on your life.
At Boundless Online Church, we're cheering you on. If you're discerning your next steps or simply want to connect with a community that supports ministry development, we'd love to walk alongside you.
Your calling matters. Your growth matters. And the Christ-centered path ahead of you? It's filled with more purpose and possibility than you can imagine.
