By reminding them, in simple and repeatable ways, that Jesus stays close like a gentle Shepherd—especially when they feel scared—so their hearts learn “I am safe, I am loved, I belong.”
A Message from FA Memphis
Welcome to a quiet corner of our digital home. At Boundless Online Church, we believe that the very first thing a child should learn about God is that He is safe. Before they learn big words or complex rules, they need to feel the warmth of His love in their hearts.
For our littlest ones, those precious explorers aged 3 to 6, the world is a big, loud, and sometimes overwhelming place. That is why we focus on concrete imagery: the soft wool of a lamb, the green of the grass, and the gentle voice of a Shepherd who never leaves their side.
Today’s story, “Barnaby the Lamb,” is designed to be read aloud. As you read, we encourage you to use a soft, melodic tone. Let your child point to the “pictures” you describe with your words. When we teach our children that God is like a Good Shepherd, we are building a foundation of trust that will last a lifetime. This is the heart of our ministry here at First Assembly Memphis: uprooting fear and planting the seeds of belonging.

The Story: Barnaby’s Quiet Meadow
Once upon a time, in a meadow where the grass felt like a soft green blanket, lived a little lamb named Barnaby.
Barnaby was very small and very fluffy. His wool was as white as a cloud and as soft as your favorite teddy bear. Barnaby loved his meadow. It was a place of “yes.”
Yes to the sweet clover. Yes to the dancing butterflies. Yes to the cool, clear water in the little brook.

Every morning, when the sun began to peek over the hills like a warm, golden smile, Barnaby would wake up and stretch his little legs. Stretch, stretch, stretch. He would shake his fuzzy tail and go “Baa!”
Barnaby was never alone in the meadow. Do you know who was with him? The Shepherd was there.
The Shepherd was big and strong, but his hands were very, very gentle. He had a tall wooden staff that he used to guide the sheep. But the best thing about the Shepherd was his voice. It sounded like a soft song.
“Good morning, Barnaby,” the Shepherd would say.
Barnaby didn’t have to worry about what he would eat. The Shepherd led him to the tastiest, greenest grass. Barnaby didn’t have to worry about getting lost. The Shepherd always watched where Barnaby’s little hooves were going.
One afternoon, a big, gray cloud covered the sun. The wind began to blow. Whoosh, whoosh! The tall grass started to bend and sway. Barnaby felt a little bit scared. His ears twitched. He looked around for his friends.
But then, Barnaby felt something. It was the Shepherd’s hand resting right on his fuzzy head.
“Don’t be afraid, little lamb,” the Shepherd whispered. “I am right here. You are safe with me.”

Barnaby took a deep breath. He smelled the fresh rain and the sweet earth. He realized that even when the sun went behind a cloud, the Shepherd was still there. The Shepherd was stronger than the wind. The Shepherd was bigger than the clouds.
The Shepherd led Barnaby to a special place under a big willow tree. The leaves of the tree hung down like green ribbons, making a secret tent. It was dry and cozy inside. Barnaby curled up in the soft grass. He tucked his nose into his woolly legs.
The Shepherd sat down right at the door of the willow tree tent. He watched the rain fall, and he watched over Barnaby.
Barnaby felt so loved. He felt so safe. He knew that no matter what happened, he belonged to the Shepherd. And because he belonged to the Shepherd, he had everything he needed.
Soon, the “pitter-patter” of the rain sounded like a lullaby. Barnaby closed his eyes and fell fast asleep in the quiet meadow.

Supplemental Pack: Growing Together
We want this story to stay in your child’s heart all week long. Here are some simple tools to help you bring the “Quiet Meadow” into your home.
Coloring Page: The Resting Lamb Description for your artist: Imagine a soft watercolor-style picture. In the center is Barnaby, a very round and fluffy lamb. He is resting his head on a patch of flowers: maybe some yellow daisies and bluebells. Above him is a big, warm sun with a smiling face. The lines are soft and rounded, making it easy for little hands to stay inside the lines. You can use your softest crayons for this one!
Memory Verse: The Secret of Safety Psalm 23:1 “The Lord is my shepherd; I have everything I need.”
Key Truth: God takes care of me because He loves me.
Signature: ____________________ (Have your child “sign” or make a mark here once they can say the verse with you!)
Parent Discussion Guide
Heart of the Story: This story is based on the biblical truth that God is our Provider and Protector. In Assemblies of God theology, we emphasize the personal relationship we have with Jesus. For a child, this relationship starts with the feeling of being “watched over.”
Questions for Littles (Ages 3-6): 1. How does Barnaby’s wool feel? Is it soft or scratchy? 2. What did the Shepherd do when Barnaby felt scared of the wind? 3. Did you know that Jesus is your Shepherd? How does it feel to know He is always watching you? 4. What is one thing you want to say “thank you” to the Shepherd for today?
Hands-On Faith: The Fluffy Lamb Craft
Items Needed: * A paper plate (or a circle cut out of blue construction paper). * Cotton balls. * Black construction paper (for the lamb's head and legs). * Glue stick. * Crayons.
The Activity: 1. Have your child color the bottom half of the paper plate green for the meadow and the top half blue for the sky. 2. Help them glue cotton balls in a big circle in the middle of the plate to make Barnaby’s body. 3. Cut out a small oval for the head and four rectangles for the legs from the black paper. Glue them onto the cotton body. 4. As you glue the cotton balls, say: “Just like these cotton balls are soft and warm, God’s love for you is soft and kind.”
Spiritual Connection Script: “While we make our Barnaby, let’s remember that the Shepherd never left Barnaby’s side. Even when the rain came, the Shepherd was right there. Whenever you look at your fluffy lamb this week, remember that Jesus is with you in your room, at the park, and even when you are sleeping. You are His favorite little lamb!”

Deepening the Roots for Parents
It can be tempting to move quickly past these “simple” stories, but as parents, we must remember that our children’s view of God is often mirrored by their view of us and the world we curate for them. When we provide a “Quiet Meadow” at home: a place of peace, consistent love, and gentle correction: we are making it easier for them to believe that God is exactly who He says He is.

Remember, you don't have to be a perfect parent to lead your child to the Good Shepherd. You just have to be a willing one. Keep your eyes on the Cross, and let His peace lead the way in your home today.
