How do I know I'm saved? Assurance of Salvation in Christ

Assurance of salvation is the confident conviction that you are at peace with God through Jesus Christ, both now and for eternity. This certainty is not based on temporary feelings or personal merit, but on the unchanging promises of Scripture, the inward witness of the Holy Spirit, and the evidence of a transformed life. By trusting in Christ's finished work, believers can experience lasting peace and spiritual security.
The Foundation of Our Faith: What the Bible Says
When we ask the question, "How do I know I'm saved?" we have to start with the most reliable source we have: the Word of God. Feelings change. One day you might feel like you’re on top of a mountain, and the next, you might feel like you’re walking through a dark valley. But God’s Word never changes.
Here are a few key verses that provide the bedrock for our assurance:
John 10:27-29 (NIV)
"My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me. I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; no one will snatch them out of my hand. My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all; no one can snatch them out of my Father’s hand."
Romans 8:38-39 (NIV)
"For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord."
1 John 5:13 (NIV)
"I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God so that you may know that you have eternal life."
Romans 10:9 (NIV)
"If you declare with your mouth, 'Jesus is Lord,' and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved."

Understanding the Assurance of Salvation
At Boundless Online Church, we want to help people meet Jesus and grow in faith online. A big part of that growth is moving from "I hope I'm saved" to "I know I'm saved."
In the Assemblies of God tradition, we lean heavily on the 16 Fundamental Truths. Specifically, Truth #4 discusses the "Salvation of Man." It teaches us that salvation is received through repentance toward God and faith toward the Lord Jesus Christ. It is an act of grace: meaning it’s a free gift we didn't earn.
Assurance isn't a "feeling" you have to manufacture. It is a present intellectual and heart-felt conviction. It rests on three specific pillars:
1. The Divine Promise of God
The first and most important ground for your assurance is the objective truth of the Bible. If God said it, that settles it. Jesus didn't say, "You might be saved if you try hard enough." He said that whoever believes in Him has eternal life.
If you have put your trust in Jesus, you are standing on a promise made by the Creator of the Universe. He is not a man that He should lie. When you doubt, go back to the text. Read the Gospel of John or the book of Romans. Remind yourself that your security isn't held up by your grip on God, but by His grip on you.
2. The Inward Witness of the Holy Spirit
The Bible tells us in Romans 8:16 that "The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God’s children."
This is an internal experience. When you become a follower of Jesus, the Holy Spirit comes to live inside you. He begins to change your desires, your thoughts, and your perspective. You might find yourself wanting to pray, wanting to read the Bible, or feeling a sense of grief when you sin: all of those are signs that the Holy Spirit is active in your life.
This "witness" is a quiet confidence that God is your Father. Even when life gets messy, there is a deep-seated peace that says, "I belong to Him."

3. The Evidence of a Changed Life
While we aren't saved by our good works, we are saved for good works. A tree is known by its fruit. If you have truly encountered the living God, it’s impossible to stay exactly the same.
In the book of 1 John, the apostle gives us several "tests" of a saved life:
The Moral Test: Do you have a desire to obey God's commands?
The Social Test: Do you have a genuine love for other believers?
The Doctrinal Test: Do you believe that Jesus is the Son of God?
If you see these "spiritual graces" growing in your life: even if they are small at first: it is a sign that God is at work in you. You aren't perfect (none of us are!), but you are headed in a new direction.
Why Do We Still Doubt?
If salvation is secure, why do so many of us struggle with doubt? It’s a question we hear often in our Bible studies.
Doubt often comes from three places:
Focusing on Feelings: Emotions are like the weather; they change constantly. If you base your salvation on how "spiritual" you feel today, you’ll be on a rollercoaster.
Focusing on Performance: If you think your salvation depends on your ability to be a "perfect Christian," you will always feel insecure because you will inevitably fail. Assurance comes from looking at Christ’s performance on the cross, not your performance in the world.
Unconfessed Sin: Sin clouds our vision. It doesn't necessarily mean you’ve lost your salvation, but it does break your fellowship with God, making it harder to hear the Spirit’s witness.
If you are struggling with these doubts today, we invite you to check out our Sunday Sermons where we often talk about the grace of God and how to walk in the freedom Christ provides.

Resting in the Finished Work of Christ
The Protestant Reformers used to say that assurance is essential to faith. Why? Because it’s hard to serve God out of love if you are constantly terrified that He’s going to kick you out of the family.
When you know you are saved, you serve God out of gratitude, not fear. You follow Him because He first loved you. You are free to be honest about your struggles because you know your standing with God is based on Jesus' righteousness, not your own.
This is the "Clarion Call" of the Gospel. It’s an invitation to stop trying to save yourself and start trusting the One who has already done the work. Whether you are a shift worker catching this blog post at 3:00 AM, a caregiver at a bedside, or someone in a place where it's not safe to go to a physical church building, know this: Jesus sees you, He loves you, and His promise is for you.
We help people meet Jesus and grow in faith online, and part of that growth is learning to rest in His grace. If you want to dive deeper into these truths, we have a wealth of resources in our Faith & Discipleship section.
A Prayer for Assurance
Heavenly Father, thank You for the gift of salvation through Your Son, Jesus Christ. I admit that sometimes my heart is full of doubt and my feelings are unsteady. Today, I choose to turn away from my own efforts and put my full trust in Your Word. Thank You, Holy Spirit, for witnessing to my spirit that I am a child of God. Help me to grow in my love for You and for others, and give me the peace that surpasses all understanding. In Jesus' name, Amen.
