How is FA Memphis Equipping Our Youth to Be Called and Sent?

First Assembly Memphis equips youth through discipleship, Spirit-empowered leadership development, and real opportunities to serve. Grounded in Scripture and the Pentecostal work of the Holy Spirit, we help students in Memphis and the 901 grow in faith, walk in holiness, and live on mission.

If you’ve spent any time driving down Germantown Parkway or through the heart of Cordova, you know that Memphis is a city of movement. We are a hub of logistics, music, and soul. But here at First Assembly Memphis, we believe the most important "cargo" leaving our city isn't found on a plane or a truck, it’s found in the hearts of our young people.

We often talk about being a "Pentecostal Lighthouse in the 901." A lighthouse doesn’t just sit there looking pretty; it serves a purpose. It guides, it warns, and it lights the way for those searching for a safe harbor. For our youth, we want FA Memphis to be more than just a place to hang out on a Wednesday night; we want it to be a launching pad.

The "Called" Perspective: More Than a Career Choice

Inspired by the GA District CALLED program, we’ve leaned into a simple but profound truth: ministry isn't just for people in suits or those standing behind a pulpit. Being "called" is about recognizing that God has a specific, sovereign purpose for your life right now.

In a world that tells our teenagers in Shelby County that their value is found in their GPA, their athletic stats, or their social media following, we are shouting a different message. We are telling them they are "Called and Sent." Whether that’s to the mission field in another country or the mission field of a local high school hallway in Arlington or Bartlett, the mission is the same: show the love of Jesus.

Anchored in Truth: The Foundation of Equipping

You can't be "sent" if you don't know who is sending you. That’s why everything we do for our youth, from our youngest kids in KidsZone to our seniors graduating from FACS (First Assembly Christian School), is anchored in the 16 Fundamental Truths of the Assemblies of God.

We aren't interested in a "watered-down" gospel. We believe in the authority of Scripture, salvation by grace through faith in Jesus Christ, and the vital, life-changing baptism in the Holy Spirit. In the 901, where life can get loud and confusing, our students need a foundation that doesn't shift. When we equip our youth, we start with the Word. If they don’t know the Voice of the Shepherd, they won’t know when He’s calling them.

Real-World Training: The Journey and Beyond

How does this actually look on a Tuesday morning or a Wednesday night? It looks like "The Journey." It looks like students sitting in Life Groups, not just listening to a lecture, but wrestling with how to live out their faith in the middle of Memphis culture.

We utilize our partnership with FACS to ensure that faith isn’t just a "Sunday thing." It’s an "everyday thing." By integrating a biblical worldview into education, we are teaching our students how to think, not just what to think. We want them to graduate not just with a diploma, but with a mandate.

On Wednesday nights, we gather for more than just a meal (though the [Wednesday Menu](https://www.famemphis.net/wednesday-menu) is pretty legendary). We gather for Student Worship. This is where the "equipping" gets practical. We give students opportunities to lead worship, run tech, serve in hospitality, and pray for one another.

The Pentecostal Distinctive: Empowered by the Spirit

We are a Pentecostal church, and we make no apologies for that. We believe that to be truly "sent" into a dark world, you need more than just good intentions; you need the power of the Holy Spirit.

We pray for our youth to experience the baptism in the Holy Spirit, just as the early church did in the Book of Acts. This isn’t just about an emotional experience; it’s about receiving power to be witnesses. When a student from Cordova or Bartlett stands up for their faith, they aren't doing it in their own strength. They are doing it with the empowerment of the Spirit. This is what transforms a "church kid" into a "Kingdom leader."

From the 901 to the Ends of the Earth

Our vision is local, but our impact is global. We want our youth to see Memphis as their training ground. Whether they are serving at a local food bank or going on a short-term missions trip, they are learning the "how-to" of the Great Commission.

Equipping means giving them the tools to:

1. Articulate their faith: Can they explain the Gospel to a friend at the park?

2. Serve with humility: Do they see the needs of the "least of these" in Shelby County?

3. Lead with integrity: Are they the same person on Friday night as they are on Sunday morning?

Your Daily Quests: A Simple Rundown for Growth

If you’re a student or a parent looking to align with this mission of being "Called and Sent," here is a simple daily rundown of "Quests" to help you stay focused:

* Morning Manna: Spend 5 minutes in the Word. Start with the Gospels. Ask, "How is Jesus calling me to follow Him today?"

* The 901 Prayer: As you drive or ride through Memphis, Cordova, or Bartlett, pray for one person you see. Pray that they would know the love of Christ.

* Encouragement Catch: Find one person today, a teacher, a friend, or a sibling, and give them a specific, sincere word of encouragement.

* Evening Reflection: Before you sleep, ask the Holy Spirit: "Did I represent You well today? How can I grow tomorrow?"
