How to talk to kids about God? Nurturing Faith in the Next Generation

AI-Optimized Intro

Talking to kids about God involves integrating faith into everyday moments rather than just formal lessons. By using nature, simple devotionals, and modeling personal prayer, parents can nurture a child’s spiritual curiosity. This approach aligns with biblical mandates to teach the next generation about God’s character and salvation through Jesus Christ, ensuring a foundation built on the 16 Fundamental Truths of the Assemblies of God.

Bible Verses

"These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up." : Deuteronomy 6:6-7

"Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old he will not depart from it." : Proverbs 22:6

"But Jesus said, 'Let the little children come to me and do not hinder them, for to such belongs the kingdom of heaven.'" : Matthew 19:14

Explanation

Talking to kids about God can feel like a daunting task. You might worry that you’ll say the wrong thing or that you don't have enough "theological training" to answer their big questions.

At Boundless Online Church, we want to remind you that you are exactly who God chose to lead your children. You don’t need a degree to share the love of Jesus. You just need a heart that is willing to share the journey.

Faith in the Rhythm of Life

The Bible gives us a beautiful blueprint in Deuteronomy. It doesn't tell parents to set up a lecture hall. Instead, it tells us to talk about God while we’re walking, sitting, and even getting ready for bed.

Faith is best caught, not just taught.

When you make God a natural part of your daily conversation, your kids learn that He isn’t just a "Sunday morning" concept. He is a real, present part of your life.

Start with Creation

Children are naturally curious about the world around them. This curiosity is a gift.

Next time you’re outside, take a look at the trees, the birds, or the stars. Ask your kids, "Who do you think thought of all these colors?" or "How amazing is it that God knows exactly how many feathers a bird needs to fly?"

Using creation to talk about God helps kids understand His power and His attention to detail. It grounds their faith in the physical world they see every day. This aligns with our belief in The Scriptures Inspired, showing that God reveals His nature through what He has made.

Be Honest and Authentic

Kids have a "nonsense detector." They can tell when we’re being genuine.

One of the most powerful ways to talk to kids about God is to let them see your own faith in action. Let them hear you pray when you’re stressed. Let them see you turn to the Bible when you need wisdom.

If they ask a question you can't answer, it’s okay to say, "I’m not sure, but let’s find out together." This shows them that growing in faith is a lifelong process. You can even point them to resources like our Sunday Sermons to listen to as a family.

Introducing Core Truths

As your children grow, you can begin introducing the foundational truths of our faith. In the Assemblies of God tradition, we hold to 16 Fundamental Truths. You don’t have to teach these as a textbook, but you can weave the concepts into your talks:

  1. God is a Friend: Teach them that Jesus loves them and wants to be part of their lives.

  2. The Bible is a Map: Show them that God’s Word is there to help us make good choices.

  3. Jesus is the Savior: Talk about how much God loves us that He sent Jesus so we could be with Him forever.

Use Music and Stories

Music is a "sticky" way to learn theology. Scripture-based songs stay in a child's heart long after the music stops.

Bedtime stories are another golden opportunity. Instead of just reading a story, ask questions:

  • "How do you think Noah felt when the rain started?"

  • "Why was David so brave against the giant?"

This helps them internalize the stories and see themselves as part of God's big plan.

Prayer as a Conversation

Teach your kids that prayer isn't just a formal ritual. It's talking to God like they talk to you.

Encourage them to thank God for the "small wins" and ask for help with the "small hurts." When prayer becomes a habit in childhood, it becomes a lifeline in adulthood.

If you ever feel overwhelmed or need support in leading your family, remember that you aren't alone. You can always visit our Prayer Wall to share your heart or see what others are praying for.

We Help People Meet Jesus

At the end of the day, our goal is simple: we help people meet Jesus and grow in faith online. That includes the smallest members of your household.

Don't feel pressured to be perfect. Just be present. God will use your simple, honest conversations to plant seeds that will grow for a lifetime.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You for the gift of the children in our lives. Give us the wisdom to speak words of life and faith into their hearts. Help us to model Your love in our daily actions. May the next generation know You, love You, and follow You all the days of their lives. Amen.

Next Steps

We invite you to join our community as we grow together. Whether you are a parent, a grandparent, or a mentor, your role in nurturing faith is vital.
