If your teenager shows a heart for service, a deep curiosity about Scripture, or a natural ability to influence others, they may be experiencing a divine calling. God frequently chooses the young to lead, and recognizing these signs early helps them step confidently into their God-given purpose.
The Weight and Wonder of the Call
There is a unique moment in the life of every parent when you realize your child isn't just "active in church", they are being summoned by the Creator. It might happen during a worship set on a Wednesday night, or it might be a quiet conversation in the car on the way home to Cordova.
At First Assembly Memphis, we believe that the "next generation" isn't just the church of tomorrow; they are a vital part of the church today. The "Confidently Called" story reminds us that when young people recognize God’s voice, it changes the trajectory of their entire lives. But for a teenager in the 901, navigating that call requires a community that recognizes their potential and a family that supports their growth.
Hearing the Voice: The Samuel Pattern

The Bible gives us a powerful blueprint for youth leadership in the story of Samuel. Before he was a prophet to kings, he was a boy serving in the tabernacle.
Definition: Calling The internal and external summoning by God to a specific purpose, ministry, or way of life that serves His Kingdom.
Samuel’s story (1 Samuel 3) teaches us three vital things about the young and the called:
Accessibility: God doesn't wait for a college degree to speak. He spoke to Samuel while he was still a "boy."
Mentorship: Samuel didn't recognize the voice at first. He needed Eli, an older mentor, to help him discern that it was the Lord speaking.
Availability: Once Samuel understood, his response was simple: "Speak, for your servant is listening."
For families in Memphis and Shelby County, our role is often like Eli’s. We are here to help our teens filter out the noise of social media and cultural pressure so they can hear the distinct, steady voice of the Holy Spirit.
Leading While Young: The Timothy Mandate

Many teenagers feel they have to "wait their turn." They think leadership is reserved for those with grey hair or a title. However, the Apostle Paul shattered that idea when he wrote to his young protégé, Timothy.
"Don’t let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith and in purity." (1 Timothy 4:12)
Definition: Sanctification The ongoing process by which the Holy Spirit works in a believer to make them more like Jesus in character and action.
Leadership in the Assemblies of God tradition isn't about being "the boss." It is about being an example. When your teen chooses to stay pure in a culture of compromise, or speaks with kindness when others are cruel, they are leading. At FA Memphis, we emphasize that Spirit-empowered leadership starts with character.
Signs Your Teen Might Be Called
How do you know if that spark of leadership is actually a divine call? Consider this table to help identify the signs in your teen's life:
Sign | Biblical Example | What it looks like today |
Spiritual Hunger | David (Psalm 63) | Asking deep questions about the Bible or wanting to spend more time in prayer. |
Compassion | Nehemiah (Nehemiah 1) | Feeling a "burden" for the hurting, the lonely, or the lost in Memphis. |
Influence | Esther (Esther 4) | Peers naturally look to them for advice or follow their lead in social settings. |
Service Heart | The Boy with Loaves (John 6) | A willingness to help with the "small tasks" at church without needing a spotlight. |
Strengthening the Local 901 Youth
We are committed to being the "Eli" for your teen. Our youth ministry, often gathering on Wednesday nights, is designed to be a training ground. We believe that a teenager from Bartlett or Arlington who is grounded in the Word of God can change the world.
Whether they are attending First Assembly Christian School (FACS) or a local public school, we want to equip them. We encourage our families to join us for Wednesday dinners before service, it’s a great way to connect with other parents who are navigating these same questions.
Practical Steps for Parents
If you suspect God is moving in your teen’s heart, here is how you can nurture that call:
Pray for Discernment: Ask the Holy Spirit to give you clarity on how to guide them.
Provide Resources: Give them access to age-appropriate Bible studies or books on leadership.
Create Space: Don't overschedule them. Give them "quiet time" where they can actually hear God.
Connect Them: Get them involved in serving. Whether it's helping with our recreational sports or volunteering at VBS, serving is the first step to leading.
Affirm Them: Let them know that you see God’s hand on their life. Your words are the most powerful earthly validation they will ever receive.
A Kingdom Perspective

The goal isn't just to produce "church leaders." The goal is to produce Kingdom-minded adults who lead in whatever field God places them, whether that’s medicine, business, education, or full-time ministry.
When your teen is "Confidently Called," they aren't just following a career path; they are following a Person: Jesus Christ. And when they follow Him, they will naturally lead others to the same hope.
