Is the Bible Historically Accurate? Evidence for the Word of God

The Bible stands as the most historically documented book of antiquity. Supported by thousands of ancient manuscripts, archaeological discoveries, and corroborating accounts from secular historians, its reliability is unmatched. Beyond just facts, this historical integrity underscores the spiritual authority of the Scriptures. For believers, these evidences confirm that the Bible is not merely a collection of stories but the divinely inspired, accurate Word of God for all generations.

Key Bible Verses

Psalm 119:160 "The entirety of Your word is truth, and every one of Your righteous judgments endures forever."

2 Timothy 3:16 "All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness."

2 Peter 1:21 "For prophecy never came by the will of man, but holy men of God spoke as they were moved by the Holy Spirit."

A Foundation of Truth

Have you ever wondered if the events described in your Bible actually happened?

It’s a fair question. Whether you are a shift worker catching up on your reading at 3:00 AM, a seeker looking for hope, or a seasoned believer, we all want to know that our faith is built on a solid foundation.

At Boundless Online Church, we believe the Bible is more than just a good book: it is the infallible rule of faith and conduct. This isn't just a "religious" claim; it’s a claim backed by a mountain of historical evidence.

Let’s look at the "receipts" history has left behind for us.

The Paper Trail: Manuscript Evidence

When historians look at ancient books, they ask two big questions: How many copies do we have? And how close are those copies to the original date of writing?

When it comes to the New Testament, the evidence is staggering.

There are over 5,800 Greek manuscripts of the New Testament. If you include other languages like Latin and Coptic, that number jumps to over 24,000.

To put that in perspective, consider Homer’s Iliad. It’s one of the most respected pieces of ancient literature, yet we only have about 1,800 copies. Even more telling is the time gap. Most ancient works have a gap of 400 to 1,000 years between when they were written and the earliest copy we possess.

For the New Testament, we have fragments dating within decades of the original writings. The "John Rylands Fragment" of the Gospel of John, for example, dates back to about A.D. 125: less than 40 years after the original was likely penned.

This means we can be 99.5% certain that what we are reading today is exactly what the apostles wrote.

The Stones Cry Out: Archaeology

For centuries, skeptics doubted the existence of certain people and places mentioned in the Bible. But time and again, the shovel has proven the Bible right.

Take the city of Jericho. For a long time, critics questioned the biblical account of its walls falling. However, excavations have shown that the walls of Jericho did indeed collapse outward, creating a ramp for an invading army: exactly as described in the book of Joshua.

Then there is the House of David. Skeptics used to claim King David was a myth, similar to King Arthur. That changed in 1993 with the discovery of the "Tel Dan Stele," an ancient stone slab mentioning the "House of David."

From the Pool of Siloam to the existence of Pontius Pilate (confirmed by the "Pilate Stone" found in Caesarea), archaeology consistently confirms the Bible's historical setting.

Voices Outside the Bible

We don't just have to take the Bible's word for it. Ancient historians who weren't Christians also recorded these events.

Flavius Josephus, a first-century Jewish historian, wrote about Jesus in his work Jewish Antiquities. He mentions Jesus’s life, His crucifixion under Pilate, and the "tribe of Christians" that followed Him.

Tacitus, a Roman historian, also documented the execution of "Christus" by Pontius Pilate and the subsequent spread of Christianity through Judea and Rome. Other writers like Pliny the Younger and Suetonius provide further "outsider" confirmation of the early church.

These sources show us that the life of Jesus was a real, historical event that changed the course of the world.

Internal Consistency and the 16 Truths

One of the most miraculous things about the Bible is its consistency.

It was written by about 40 different authors over 1,500 years. These authors came from all walks of life: kings, fishermen, doctors, and shepherds. They wrote in different languages (Hebrew, Aramaic, Greek) and on different continents.

Yet, from Genesis to Revelation, the Bible tells one unified story: God’s plan to redeem humanity through Jesus Christ.

This leads us to a core belief. In the 16 Fundamental Truths of the Assemblies of God, the very first truth is the Inspired Scriptures. We believe that the Bible is the authoritative Word of God, providing a perfect map for how we should live.

Why History Matters for Your Faith

Why does all this history matter?

Because if the Bible is historically accurate about the things we can see: like cities, kings, and wars: then we can trust it for the things we can’t see: like the forgiveness of sins, the promise of peace, and the hope of eternal life.

A Prayer for Clarity and Faith

Lord, thank You for giving us Your Word. Thank You that You didn't leave us to guess about who You are, but You revealed Yourself through history and through Your Son, Jesus. As I read the Bible, help me to see the truth of Your promises. Strengthen my faith and give me peace in knowing that Your Word is a solid foundation that will never fail. Amen.
