Is There a Heaven and Hell? What the Bible Says About Eternity

Have you ever stared at the stars and wondered what comes next? It’s a question that connects every human being who has ever lived. The Bible doesn't leave us guessing. It paints a clear picture of two distinct destinations: Heaven and Hell. Today, we’re looking at what the Scriptures actually say about eternity and why your choice today changes everything about your forever.
The Reality of Forever
Most of us spend our lives focused on the "here and now." We worry about the mortgage, the next shift at work, or what’s for dinner. But deep down, we all feel that pull toward something more.
The Bible tells us that God has "set eternity in the human heart" (Ecclesiastes 3:11). This means you were designed to live forever. Death isn't the end of your story; it’s a doorway.
According to the Scriptures, there are two permanent destinations for the soul after this life. These aren't just metaphors or fairy tales meant to make us "behave." They are real places. At Boundless Online Church, we lean into the 16 Fundamental Truths of the Assemblies of God, which affirm the reality of both a final judgment and a glorious new beginning for those who follow Christ.

What Does the Bible Say About Hell?
Talking about Hell can feel heavy, but it’s a vital part of the conversation. Jesus actually spoke about Hell more than almost anyone else in the Bible. He didn't do this to be mean; He did it because He loves us and wants to warn us.
The Bible describes Hell as a place of eternal separation from God. Here are a few things the Scriptures clarify:
It is Eternal The Bible describes Hell as a place of "everlasting punishment" (Matthew 25:46). It’s not a temporary "time-out" or a place where you get a second chance after death. It is a final destination for those who have chosen to reject God’s grace during their lifetime.
It is a Place of Torment Scripture uses vivid imagery like "eternal fire" and "outer darkness" to describe the reality of Hell. It’s a place where the presence of God: the source of all love, light, and peace: is completely absent.
It was Not Made for You This is a crucial point. Matthew 25:41 tells us that the "eternal fire" was originally prepared for the devil and his angels. God’s heart is for every person to be saved. Hell is the tragic result of human choice: choosing to live apart from God here, which leads to being apart from Him forever.
If you’re struggling with these concepts or feeling overwhelmed, you aren't alone. We have resources like our Sunday Sermons where we dive deeper into these tough topics with grace and clarity.
What Does the Bible Say About Heaven?
On the other side of the coin is the most beautiful promise ever made: Heaven.
Heaven is more than just clouds and harps. It is the literal presence of God. It is the home we’ve been longing for our entire lives.
Being With God The greatest thing about Heaven isn't the streets of gold or the pearly gates; it’s that God is there. Revelation 21:3 says, "Look! God’s dwelling place is now among the people, and he will dwell with them." Every tear will be wiped away. There will be no more pain, no more cancer, no more graveyard shifts, and no more sorrow.
A Direct Transition For the believer in Jesus, there is no "limbo." The Bible suggests that to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord (2 Corinthians 5:8). When a follower of Christ takes their last breath on earth, their next breath is in the presence of the Savior.
The New Heavens and Earth Our final state isn't just floating spirits. We believe in the Final Judgment and the creation of a "New Heaven and a New Earth." It will be a physical, perfected reality where we live, work, and worship in complete harmony with God and each other.

Why the Choice Matters Now
You might be wondering, "How do I make sure I’m on the right path?"
The Bible is very clear that eternity is a matter of choice. John 3:36 says, "Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life; whoever does not obey the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God remains on him."
It’s not about being "good enough." None of us are. It’s about accepting the gift that Jesus bought for us on the cross. He took the punishment we deserved so that we could have the life He deserves.
We help people meet Jesus and grow in faith online. Whether you are a shift worker watching this at 3:00 AM, a caregiver looking for hope, or someone living in a part of the world where you can't openly go to church, this promise is for you.
A Message for the Seekers and the Hurting
Maybe you’ve lived a life that makes you think you don't deserve Heaven. Or maybe you’ve been told that God is just waiting to send you to Hell.
That couldn't be further from the truth.
God is "not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance" (2 Peter 3:9). He is the father in the story of the Prodigal Son, standing at the edge of the road, waiting for you to come home.
If you feel lost, remember that Jesus came to seek and save the lost. Your past doesn't disqualify you from God's future. His grace is big enough to cover every mistake and every regret.

Walking Into Eternity With Confidence
Knowing the truth about Heaven and Hell shouldn't fill us with dread; it should fill us with a sense of urgency and purpose.
If Heaven is real, then every person we meet matters. If Hell is real, then the Gospel is the most important news we can ever share.
For those of us in the Boundless Online Church community, we stay connected through things like the Clarion Call Bible Study to keep our eyes fixed on these eternal truths. It’s easy to get distracted by the noise of the world, but staying grounded in the Word gives us a "calm power" that the world can't take away.
A Short Prayer
Lord, thank You for the promise of eternity. Thank You that You don't leave us in the dark about what comes next. I ask that You would settle the hearts of those reading this today. If they are afraid, give them Your peace. If they are lost, show them the way home to You. Help us to live every day with our eyes on Heaven, sharing Your love with everyone we meet. Amen.
