When people say “God,” they can mean a lot of different things.
A higher power. A spiritual force. A personal idea of meaning. A family tradition.
But Scripture is clear: there is one true God: the real Creator, the real Lord, the real Savior: who has made Himself known.
And here’s the good news: you don’t have to guess what He’s like. You can know Him.
This post is a simple, Bible-based look at who the one true God is: aligned with the Assemblies of God (AG) 16 Fundamental Truths: and how that changes everyday life.
1) God is real, personal, and not an “idea”
The Bible doesn’t start with arguments. It starts with a statement:
“In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.” (Genesis 1:1)
God isn’t a human invention. He isn’t the product of culture or emotion. He’s the One who existed before everything else existed.
And He’s not distant.
Throughout Scripture, God speaks, leads, comforts, corrects, forgives, and restores. He knows people by name. He hears prayer. He shows up in real moments.
If you’ve ever thought, “I want to believe… I’m just not sure God is near,” you’re not alone.
One of the most important truths you can settle is this:
God is not just powerful. God is personal.
2) God reveals Himself (so we’re not left guessing)
A lot of people picture faith as a blind leap. Biblical faith isn’t that. Biblical faith is a response to God’s self-revelation.
God makes Himself known in three major ways:
Through creation
Creation points beyond itself:
“The heavens declare the glory of God…” (Psalm 19:1)
The order, beauty, and complexity of the world aren’t proof of everything: but they are a witness. Creation is like a signpost saying, “Someone made this.”
Through Scripture (God’s Word)
God doesn’t just leave clues. He speaks clearly.
AG Fundamental Truth #1 is the inspired Scriptures: the Bible is God’s trustworthy revelation, and it is our authoritative rule for faith and life.

Through Jesus
God’s clearest revelation isn’t a concept: it’s a Person.
“The Son is the image of the invisible God…” (Colossians 1:15)
Jesus doesn’t just teach us about God. Jesus shows us God.
3) The One True God is Triune: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit
Christians don’t believe in three gods. We believe in one God who exists eternally in three Persons: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
That’s the Trinity.
This matters because it protects us from two common errors:
God is not a lonely, impersonal force. God is relational within Himself.
Jesus and the Holy Spirit are not “created helpers.” They are fully God.
AG Fundamental Truth #2 states the one true God is revealed as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
This is also why the gospel is so deep: The Father sends the Son. The Son saves us through the cross and resurrection. The Holy Spirit brings new life and power to the believer.
God isn’t fragmented. God is perfectly one: yet wonderfully relational.
4) God’s character: what He’s like (and why it matters)
If you’ve been wounded by hypocrisy, manipulation, or religious control, it’s easy to assume God is like the worst experience you’ve had with people.
But God’s character is not a projection of human brokenness. God is holy, good, and consistent.
Here are a few of the Bible’s steady truths about Him:
God is holy
God is morally perfect: no darkness, no corruption, no shifting standards.
“Be holy, because I am holy.” (1 Peter 1:16)
His holiness isn’t a threat; it’s why He can be trusted.
God is loving
God doesn’t love like people love: hot one day, cold the next.
“God is love.” (1 John 4:8)
Love isn’t just what God does. Love is who God is.
God is just
God doesn’t ignore evil. He doesn’t shrug at injustice. He judges rightly.
That’s good news for anyone who has ever whispered, “This isn’t fair.”
God is merciful and gracious
God doesn’t excuse sin: He forgives sin through Jesus.
“The LORD… is compassionate and gracious, slow to anger…” (Exodus 34:6)
God’s mercy is not God pretending you didn’t break anything. It’s God choosing to heal what sin broke: starting with you.
God is faithful
He keeps His word. He finishes what He starts.
If your life has been unstable, God’s faithfulness is a place to rest.
5) Creator and King: God’s authority is good news
God is the Creator, which means:
You are not an accident.
You are not random.
You are not disposable.
You are not “too far gone.”
God’s sovereignty can sound scary until you realize His heart.
The God who rules the universe is the God who invites you close.
And His authority isn’t about control: it’s about care.
If God created you, then your life has meaning even when your circumstances feel messy.
6) The problem is real: sin separates us from God
To know the one true God, we also have to be honest about what blocks relationship with Him.
AG Fundamental Truth #5 speaks to the fall of man: sin is not just “bad choices.” It’s a spiritual condition that damages our relationship with God and twists our desires.
Sin separates. It distorts. It destroys.
And nobody escapes it by trying harder.
That’s why God didn’t send advice. He sent a Savior.
7) Knowing God happens through Jesus: salvation is a gift
AG Fundamental Truth #4 and #5 center on Jesus: His deity, His saving work, His death and resurrection.
The heart of Christianity is not “be better.” It’s “be made new.”
“For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son…” (John 3:16)
Jesus lived without sin. He died on the cross for our sin. He rose again. He offers forgiveness and new life to everyone who believes.
That’s why Christians can say they know God: not because we’re perfect, but because Jesus brings us home to the Father.
If you’re unsure where you stand with God, you can pray honestly right now:
“Jesus, I believe You are the Son of God. Forgive my sin. Make me new. Teach me to follow You.”
That prayer isn’t magic. It’s trust. And God responds to real trust.
8) God doesn’t just forgive: you can live empowered (Spirit-filled)
God’s goal isn’t simply to clean up your past. He wants to empower your future.
AG Fundamental Truth #7 teaches the baptism in the Holy Spirit, and #8 highlights the initial physical evidence of speaking in other tongues.
This can feel unfamiliar for some, but here’s the simple core:
The Holy Spirit lives in every believer.
The Holy Spirit also empowers believers for witness and holy living.
God still gives spiritual gifts today to build up the Church and reach the world.
Spirit-empowered living isn’t about hype. It’s about help.
If you’re exhausted, tempted, numb, or afraid: God hasn’t left you to “figure it out.” The Holy Spirit strengthens ordinary people to live for Jesus in real life.
9) Knowing God changes everyday life (even in hard situations)
This matters for the whole world: not just people with stable schedules and safe environments.
If you’re a night-shift worker, a caregiver, disabled, isolated, serving overseas, or living where faith is risky: knowing the Creator is not an extra. It’s survival-level hope.
Here are a few practical ways the truth of “one true God” meets you where you are:
When life feels chaotic
God is not confused. He sees the full picture.
When you feel alone
The Father adopts. Jesus stays close. The Spirit comforts.
When you feel trapped in patterns
God’s power is stronger than addiction, shame, and generational darkness.
When you’ve been hurt by religion
God is not intimidated by your questions. Bring them. He can handle honesty.

10) The one true God is building His Church: and you’re invited
God doesn’t only save individuals; He forms a people.
AG Fundamental Truth #10 speaks to the Church and its mission. We don’t gather because we “have it together.” We gather because Jesus is Lord, and we’re learning Him together.
If you’re trying to rebuild faith, or start faith for the first time, consider a simple next step:
Read one Gospel (John is great)
Pray honestly (short prayers count)
Connect with a faith community online
You can explore more resources and articles here: https://www.boundlessonlinechurch.org/blog
11) Hope with a future: Jesus is coming again
Knowing God also means knowing where history is headed.
AG Fundamental Truths #13–#16 remind us:
Jesus will return (the blessed hope)
There will be resurrection and final judgment
God will establish a new heaven and new earth
This isn’t meant to create fear. It’s meant to create strength.
When you know the King is coming back, you can stay faithful in the middle of pressure.
A simple “daily drop” habit (8:00 AM) to grow in knowing God
If you’re building consistency, here’s a simple rhythm you can schedule as a recurring daily reminder for 8:00 AM (your local time):
1) One minute: “God, help me know You today.” 2) Five minutes: Read one short Bible passage (start in John) 3) One question: “What does this show me about who God is?” 4) One action: obey one small step 5) One person: pray for someone else
Small, steady steps create deep roots.
Questions to sit with this week
When you picture God, what emotions come up first: comfort, fear, distance, anger, hope?
What’s one thing you want to be true about God? What does Scripture actually say?
If God is personal, what would it look like to talk to Him honestly today?
If you want, bring your questions to our community discussion and we’ll walk it out together: https://www.boundlessonlinechurch.org/group-page/im-new-q-a-welcome-center/discussion
