News & Peace: Finding Hope When the World Feels Heavy

If you’re anything like me, you probably woke up this morning, reached for your phone to check the time, and ended up staring at a news notification that made your heart do a little somersault. Between the morning coffee and the scramble to get the kids’ shoes on, the weight of the world has a way of sneaking into our kitchens.
The headlines today are undeniably heavy. We’ve all seen the reports of the recent US-Iran strikes, the tension in the Strait of Hormuz, and the headlines that feel more like a movie script than our Tuesday morning reality. For parents, this kind of news hits differently. We aren’t just looking at maps and military strategy; we’re looking at our kids and wondering what kind of world they’re inheriting.
It’s enough to make you want to put the phone in a drawer, grab a bowl of cereal, and hide under the covers. But at Boundless Online Church, we believe in a different way of moving through the world. We’re all about that 24/7 Church When Life Doesn’t Pause life. Because let’s be honest, life definitely isn’t pausing for the news cycle, and neither is God’s grace.
The "Peacemaker" Perspective: Giving Peace a Chance
In the midst of the escalating noise, there was a quiet, hopeful note at the United Nations this week. Pakistan’s representative made a call that caught my eye: a plea to "give peace a little more chance" through diplomacy and dialogue.
It was a small moment, easily lost between the reports of drone strikes and retaliatory measures, but it’s a vital reminder for us. As followers of Jesus, we aren't just consumers of news; we are called to be peacemakers. Even when global tensions feel like a tangled knot that no one can unbind, we know the One who speaks peace into the storm.
When we talk to our kids about what’s happening, we don’t have to give them a lecture on international relations. We can simply show them that while the world often reaches for conflict, there are always voices calling for a different way. We can teach them that peace starts at our own kitchen tables, in how we treat our neighbors, and in how we pray for those on the other side of the globe.
Finding the Local "Light" in Memphis
While the global stage feels intense, here in Memphis, there is so much beauty blooming right now. It’s like God is dropping little "hope crumbs" all over the 901 to remind us that joy hasn't left the building.
Take a look at the Overton Park Shell. Can you believe it’s celebrating its 90th anniversary this year? Since 1936, that stage has seen everything from Elvis’s first professional show to countless nights of families spread out on blankets under the stars. It’s a monument to community, to music, and to the way art can bring us together. It reminds us that even after 90 years of changing times, some things, like a good song and a warm Memphis night, are worth holding onto.

And then there’s the Philippine Fiesta. If you haven't experienced the colors, the dancing, and (most importantly) the food, you are missing out on a masterclass in God’s creativity. Seeing our Filipino neighbors celebrate their heritage is a beautiful reminder of the "Boundless" nature of God’s family. We aren't all the same, and that is exactly the point.
Then, of course, we have Juneteenth. As we celebrate freedom and reflect on the long journey toward justice, we see the fingerprints of a God who loves liberty. Juneteenth in Memphis is more than just a holiday; it’s a heartbeat. It’s a reminder that even the heaviest chains can be broken and that the light of freedom eventually finds its way into every corner.
When we see these local celebrations, it helps balance the scales. Yes, the world is heavy. But it is also incredibly beautiful, diverse, and full of moments worth celebrating.

The Spiritual Anchor: A Kingdom That Cannot Be Shaken
So, how do we hold both of these things at once? How do we carry the weight of the US-Iran strikes in one hand and the joy of a Memphis summer festival in the other?
We look to the words of Jesus. In John 16:33, He tells us: "I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world."
Notice that Jesus didn't say, "In this world, you'll have a perfectly stress-free life with no scary news notifications." He promised us trouble. But He also promised us His peace.
As parents, our job isn't to shield our children from the fact that the world is broken. They’re smart; they can sense the tension. Our job is to show them where to find the anchor. We aren't just raising kids to survive a world at war; we are raising them to be citizens of a Kingdom that cannot be shaken. We are raising them to know that the King of that Kingdom is good, He is present, and He is working all things together for the good of those who love Him.
Practical Discipleship: Pivoting from Anxiety to Prayer
If you’re feeling that "news-heavy" pit in your stomach, here are five simple ways to pivot your family from anxiety to the peace of Christ today:
The "Phone-Free" First Hour: Try to spend the first hour of your day without checking the news. Instead, read a Psalm or just sit in the quiet. Let God’s Word be the first "notification" your heart receives.
Simple Table Prayer: At dinner, pray specifically for the leaders of the nations (1 Timothy 2:1-2). Ask your kids, "How can we pray for families in Iran or Jordan tonight?" It shifts the focus from "fear of them" to "love for them."
The "God is Big" Walk: Take a walk at Overton Park or just around your neighborhood. Point out the trees, the sunset, or the birds. Remind your kids (and yourself) that the God who manages the orbit of the planets is more than capable of handling the news cycle.
Create a "Blessing Jar": After hearing a heavy news story, write down one good thing that happened in your family or city that day and put it in a jar. It’s a visual reminder that God is still moving.
Listen Together: Put on an episode of the Connected Faith Podcast or listen to some worship music while you're in the car. Fill the air with truth rather than speculation.
