News & Peace: News Insight - Cultivating Hope in Broken Spaces

Life has a funny way of getting messy right when we think we’ve finally sorted the laundry or organized the "everything drawer." Between the morning rush, the endless pings of notifications, and the heavy headlines we see on our screens, it’s easy to feel like the world is a bit... fractured. If you’ve ever felt like you’re trying to build a beautiful life with pieces that don’t quite fit, you aren’t alone.
But here’s the secret we hold onto at Boundless Online Church: our God is a master at reclaiming what’s broken. He doesn’t wait for things to be perfect to start His work; He steps right into the middle of the mess and starts planting seeds of hope.
This week, we’re looking at two incredible stories: one from a workshop in Gaza and another from a quiet church yard in Massachusetts: that show us how hope isn’t just a feeling. It’s something we cultivate, even in the most unlikely places.
Salvaged Silk: Amir’s Bicycle-Powered Beauty
In the middle of Khan Younis, a young man named Amir al-Rantisi is doing something that seems almost impossible. At 24 years old, Amir is a tailor, but his shop doesn’t look like the ones you’d find at the mall. He works surrounded by ruins, salvaged cloth, and the constant hum of a machine powered by, of all things, a bicycle.
When the electricity goes out: which is often: Amir doesn’t stop. He’s rigged a bicycle pedal to his sewing machine. While someone pedals, he sews. But it’s what he’s sewing that catches the eye. Amir goes into the rubble of destroyed areas to find burnt or damaged fabric: scraps of satin, organza, and tulle. He carefully cuts away the charred edges and redesigns them into elegant, vibrant gowns for little girls and women.

It’s a literal picture of "beauty from ashes" (Isaiah 61:3). Against the grey concrete and blackened buildings, his workshop is a burst of color. For the families in Gaza, these dresses aren’t just clothes; they are a statement that dignity and joy cannot be buried under rubble.
Amir’s story reminds us that when resources are low, God’s creativity is high. He takes the scraps we think are useless and turns them into something worthy of a celebration. Are there "scraps" in your life today: frustrations, setbacks, or tired moments: that you can hand over to the Master Tailor?
The Healing with Hope Garden: A Path Through Grief
Across the ocean in Hopedale, Massachusetts, another kind of beauty was dedicated this past Sunday, June 14, 2026. At Sacred Heart Church, the community gathered to open the Healing with Hope Garden.
This isn’t just a patch of grass. It’s a sacred space designed for families who are walking through the heavy seasons of grief and remembrance. The garden features a Flame Thrower Red Bud tree: a tree known for its stunning, heart-shaped leaves that transition through shades of red and gold. But perhaps the most striking feature is the cross-shaped path.

Crafted from charcoal-gray engraved bricks, the path forms a massive cross on the ground. Each brick tells a story: a name of a loved one, a date, a prayer. It’s a place where families can sit at the "Ben-ch" (dedicated to Ben Kellogg) or gather around the fire pit to share stories.
What makes this garden so special is the intentionality behind it. The community realized that grief needs a place to go. By planting a tree and laying these bricks, they’ve created a physical reminder that even when life feels like it has stopped, God is still growing something new. The cross isn't just a symbol of the past; in this garden, it’s a foundation you can literally walk on as you find your way back to hope.
Family Discipleship: Talking to Kids About Hope in Brokenness
As parents, our instinct is often to shield our kids from the "broken" parts of the world. We want them to see the bright dresses and the pretty flowers, but we skip the part about the ruins or the grief. However, cultivating hope in our children actually starts with acknowledging that things aren't always perfect.
If you're looking for ways to bring these stories home to your kitchen table, here are a few practical steps for Christian parenting in a messy world:
The "Glimmer Hunt": This week, take a walk around your neighborhood. Look for "glimmers": little signs of God’s goodness in unexpected places. Maybe it’s a flower growing through a sidewalk crack or a neighbor helping someone with groceries. Talk about how Amir found beauty in the ruins.
Plant a "Hope Seed": Grab a small pot and some soil. Let your kids plant a seed and talk about the Healing with Hope Garden. Remind them that for a flower to grow, the seed first has to be "buried" in the dark. It’s a great way to explain that God is working even when we can’t see Him yet.
The Bicycle Prayer: Mention Amir’s bicycle-powered machine. Sometimes, we have to do our part (the pedaling) while God does the miraculous part (the sewing). Ask your kids: "What is one thing you can 'pedal' on today? (Like being kind to a sibling or finishing homework) and what do we need to ask God to 'sew' together for us?"
Check the Map of Your Heart: If you or your child are feeling overwhelmed by the news, visit our Verses for How You Feel page. It’s a great tool to help kids connect their big emotions to God’s big promises.
