News & Peace: When Oil Passes $100 and Global Markets Shake , Where Is God in the Economic Storm?

The gas pump screen flickers, the digits on the grocery receipt climb higher, and the headlines flash with reports of drone strikes and shipping disruptions. For many of us, the rise in oil prices above $100 isn't just a number on a stock ticker; it’s a tightening in the chest and a shadow over the family budget.

Is God still in control when the global economy feels like it’s spinning out of control?

God remains the sovereign source of peace and provision even when markets fail. While geopolitical conflicts and rising costs create real hardship, our security is anchored in the unchanging nature of God, who promises to sustain those who seek His Kingdom first.

The Headlines: A World in Flux

We find ourselves in a moment of significant global tension. As of late July 2026, the conflict between the U.S. and Iran has escalated following nearly two weeks of sustained military strikes. The retaliation, drone strikes across Kuwait, Bahrain, Jordan, and Iraq, has sent ripples through the international shipping community. With the Strait of Hormuz and the Red Sea under threat, oil has surged past $100 per barrel for the first time in years.

For the average person in Memphis, Cordova, or anywhere across the globe, this geopolitical "macro" event has very "micro" consequences.

  • Inflation Squeeze: Economists estimate that sustained $100 oil could add up to 0.7 percentage points to headline inflation.

  • Supply Chain Strain: Increased fuel costs translate directly to higher prices for groceries, clothing, and essential goods.

  • Global Anxiety: The "mild stagflationary shock" predicted by major banks creates a climate of fear, making families wonder if a deeper recession is on the horizon.

It is easy to feel like a passenger on a ship with no captain. But as believers, we are called to look past the waves to the One who walks upon them.

Biblical Foundation: The Rock in the Rising Tide

When the "mountains fall into the heart of the sea," as Psalm 46 describes, our natural instinct is panic. However, Scripture provides a different blueprint for navigating economic storms.

1. Psalm 46:1-3 , Our Ever-Present Help "God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea." This verse doesn't say the earth won't give way; it says we don't have to fear when it does. Our refuge isn't a high-interest savings account; it is a Person.

Psalm 46:1 , God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble.

2. Matthew 6:25-34 , The Cure for Anxiety Jesus explicitly addresses the anxiety we feel regarding food, drink, and clothing, the very things being impacted by inflation today. He reminds us that if the Father feeds the birds and clothes the lilies, He is certainly aware of your rent, your gas tank, and your grocery list.

3. Isaiah 43:2 , Passing Through the Waters "When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and when you pass through the rivers, they will not sweep over you." Note that God says "when," not "if." We are not exempt from the economic waters, but we are promised they will not sweep us away.

5 Practical Ways to Find Peace in the Economic Storm

How do we practically bridge the gap between a $100 oil barrel and a heart full of peace? Here are five steps to re-anchor your life this week.

1. Practice Wise Stewardship, Not Fearful Hoarding

Stewardship is the act of managing God's resources with wisdom. When prices rise, it is a call to revisit our budgets with a pastoral eye. Ask: What is essential? Where can I be more disciplined? Prudence is a biblical virtue (Proverbs 21:5). Tightening your belt out of wisdom is different from clenching your fists out of fear.

2. Limit the "Noise" and Guard Your Heart

Anxiety thrives on the 24-hour news cycle. While it is important to stay informed, staring at the ticker for hours will not lower the price of oil. It will only raise your blood pressure. Dedicate more time to the "Good News" than the nightly news. If you find yourself spiraling after checking the markets, it’s time to unplug and pray.

3. Deepen Community Solidarity

In the early church (Acts 2), believers met each other's needs as they arose. If you are in the 901 area, Bartlett, Arlington, or Memphis, reach out to your local church family at FA Memphis. If you are joining us from around the world via Boundless Online Church, engage in our digital small groups. We are not meant to carry economic burdens in isolation. Ride-sharing, sharing meals, and praying for one another are ways we reflect the Kingdom in a season of scarcity.

4. Pray for the Peace of Nations

Our economic anxiety is often rooted in global conflict. Scripture commands us to pray for those in authority and for the peace of Jerusalem (and by extension, the world). Pray for the de-escalation of the U.S.-Iran conflict. Pray for the safety of those in Kuwait, Jordan, and Erbil. When we pray for the world, we stop feeling like victims of it and start acting as ambassadors within it.

5. Re-anchor Your Identity in the Eternal

Your net worth is not your self-worth. Your bank balance is not your "blessing meter." If your identity is tied to the strength of the dollar or the price of a gallon of gas, you will always be unstable. Re-anchor yourself in the truth that you are a child of God, and His Kingdom is not subject to the fluctuations of the Strait of Hormuz.

The economy is a tide; God is the rock.

Life Takeaway: The Economy is a Tide; God is the Rock

Tides go in and tides go out. There are seasons of abundance and seasons of lean. But the Rock of Ages does not move. Whether oil is at $20 or $120, the promise of God remains the same: "I will never leave you nor forsake you" (Hebrews 13:5).

Peace is not the absence of high prices; it is the presence of the Provider. This week, as you navigate the news and the grocery aisles, take a deep breath and remember that the One who holds the stars also holds your tomorrow.

Matthew 6:33 , Seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.
