News & Peace: When the Earth Shakes in Japan — Where Is God in the Rubble?

4 min read

When sudden disaster strikes, our hearts instinctively cry out for stability and hope. As believers, we anchor ourselves in the unchanging presence of God, finding our unshakeable refuge and strength in Christ even when the physical world around us trembles.

The Ground Beneath Our Feet

On July 28, 2026, the resilience of communities in Kumamoto Prefecture, Kyushu, Japan, was tested once again when a powerful 7.1 magnitude earthquake struck at a shallow depth. The seismic event brought intense Shindo 7 shaking, triggering building collapses, including a partial collapse and explosion at an Aeon shopping mall, widespread power outages affecting over 48,000 households, and brief tsunami advisories along the Ariake and Yatsushiro Seas. In moments like these, global communities watch with bated breath, holding families, rescue personnel, and residents in urgent prayer.

When the earth shakes and familiar structures crumble, humanity confronts a profound existential question: Where is God in the rubble?

Finding Refuge When the Earth Gives Way

Scripture does not promise that believers will be entirely shielded from the physical trials of a fallen, broken world. Instead, it promises that God is right there in the midst of them. The sons of Korah wrote in Psalm 46:1-3:

"God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea, though its waters roar and foam and the mountains quake with their surging."

Notice the realism of the Psalmist: “Though the earth give way.” The Bible acknowledges that natural disasters, tragedies, and sudden upheavals are part of a groaning creation. Yet, the divine response to terror is not panic; it is the immediate, steadfast presence of an Almighty God. He is not distant in our suffering. He is our ever-present help.

God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. , Psalm 46:1-3

An Unshakeable Foundation

In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus contrasted two builders: one who built his house upon the sand, and one who dug deep and laid his foundation upon the rock (Matthew 7:24-27). When the rains fell, the floods came, and the winds beat against those houses, the house on the sand collapsed with a great crash, but the house on the rock stood firm.

Japan is a nation uniquely acquainted with seismic activity, having weathered earthquakes for centuries through remarkable engineering, cultural solidarity, and enduring community spirit. Yet spiritually, the true anchor transcends concrete and steel. It is the peace of Christ, which is not the absence of shaking, but the presence of a foundation that cannot be moved.

Through the prophet Isaiah, God reminds His people of His everlasting covenant of peace:

"Though the mountains be shaken and the hills be removed, yet my unfailing love for you will not be shaken nor my covenant of peace be removed,” says the Lord, who has compassion on you. (Isaiah 54:10)

Mountains, symbols of permanence in the ancient world, can be shaken. Earthquakes can alter landscapes in seconds. But the steadfast, unfailing love of God remains utterly immovable.

Though the mountains be shaken, yet my unfailing love will not be shaken. , Isaiah 54:10

The Church as a Beacon of Hope in Japan

In times of crisis, the local Church in Japan has historically risen as a powerful beacon of compassion, practical relief, and spiritual light. Long before modern relief organizations arrived, Christian ministries, pastors, and believers in regions like Kumamoto and across Kyushu have opened their doors, fed the hungry, comforted the grieving, and prayed over the brokenhearted.

The global Body of Christ stands in profound solidarity with our brothers and sisters in Japan. We honor their resilience, weep with those who weep, and lift up prayers for supernatural comfort and restoration.

Practical Ways to Pray Right Now

When distance separates us geographically, prayer bridges every mile. Here are four practical ways you can intercede for those impacted by the Kumamoto earthquake:

  1. Pray for the Rescue Workers: Lift up firefighters, paramedics, and search-and-rescue teams navigating dangerous debris, aftershocks, and structural instability to save lives.

  2. Pray for the Trapped and Injured: Ask the Lord to protect those who are awaiting rescue, granting them physical endurance, calm hearts, and swift deliverance.

  3. Pray for the Grieving and Displaced: Intercede for families who have lost homes, security, or loved ones, that they may experience the profound, tangible comfort of the Holy Spirit.

  4. Pray for the Japanese Church: Pray that local pastors and congregations in Kyushu and throughout Japan will be emboldened as instruments of healing, practical aid, and Gospel hope in their communities.
