SEO/Growth: Coming Home - A Simple Guide to Starting Prayer Again

A Message from FA Memphis

Starting a prayer life after being away from God can feel overwhelming, but it is as simple as coming home. God isn't looking for perfect words or long rituals; He is looking for a sincere heart. By focusing on honesty, using short moments throughout your day, and relying on the Holy Spirit’s help, anyone can rebuild their connection with Jesus regardless of how long they’ve been gone.

The Door is Always Open

We’ve all been there. Life gets loud, schedules get packed, or maybe a season of doubt or pain makes the distance between you and God feel like a canyon. You might feel like you need to "clean yourself up" or find the right religious vocabulary before you can speak to Him again.

But here’s the truth: God has been standing at the door the whole time.

Returning to prayer isn't about proving you’ve changed; it’s about acknowledging that you need Him. In the Assemblies of God tradition, we believe that relationship with Christ is central. That relationship is sustained through communication: which is all prayer really is. Whether you’ve been away for two months or twenty years, the invitation is the same. Come as you are.

What the Bible Says About Coming Home

When we feel hesitant to pray, the Word of God gives us the confidence we need to take that first step.

Psalm 145:18 – "The Lord is near to all who call on him, to all who call on him in truth."

James 4:8 – "Come near to God and he will come near to you."

Luke 15:20 – "But while he was still a long way off, his father saw him and was filled with compassion for him; he ran to his son, threw his arms around him and kissed him."

Romans 8:26 – "In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans."

Breaking the Silence: How to Start

If you haven’t prayed in a long time, the silence can feel awkward. You might sit down to pray and find your mind wandering to your to-do list or feeling guilty about the time you’ve lost. That’s okay. Here is a simple framework to help you break the ice.

1. Start with Honesty

You don't have to pretend. If you feel distant, tell Him. If you feel guilty, say it. A simple prayer like, "Lord, I’ve been away and I don’t know how to start this, but I want to be near You again," is a powerful act of faith. God values your truth more than your "churchy" words.

2. Keep it Short

Don’t feel pressured to pray for an hour on your first day back. Start with five minutes. Use your commute, your lunch break, or those quiet moments before the house wakes up. Consistency is more important than duration when you are rebuilding a habit.

3. Use the "ACTS" Model

If you’re stuck on what to say, this simple acronym can guide you:

  • Adoration: Tell God what you love about Him.

  • Confession: Be honest about where you’ve missed the mark.

  • Thanksgiving: Mention a few things you are grateful for today.

  • Supplication: Ask for what you (and others) need.

4. Lean on the Holy Spirit

One of our core beliefs is the power of the Holy Spirit. We believe the Spirit is our Comforter and Helper. When you don't have the words, just sit in the silence and ask the Holy Spirit to pray through you. He understands your heart even when your tongue is tied.

Prayer for the Global Family

At Boundless Online Church, we know that "coming home" looks different for everyone.

Maybe you are a shift worker in a quiet warehouse at 3:00 AM, wondering if God hears you over the hum of machinery. Maybe you are a caregiver in a hospital room, exhausted and feeling spiritually empty. Or perhaps you are in a part of the world where following Jesus isn't safe, and your prayers have to be whispered in the dark.

God is not limited by your location or your circumstances. We help people meet Jesus and grow in faith online because we know the "church" isn't a building: it's a people connected to a Living God. Your "home" with God is wherever you are right now.

Overcoming the "Guilt Gap"

The biggest thing that keeps people from starting prayer again isn't busyness; it's guilt. We feel like we’ve let God down. We feel like He’s disappointed in us.

But look back at the story of the Prodigal Son in Luke 15. The father didn't wait for the son to give a long speech of apology. He didn't make him work off his debt. He saw him from a distance and ran to him.

The moment you turn your heart toward God, He is already moving toward you. The "guilt gap" is a lie from the enemy designed to keep you isolated. In Christ, you are forgiven, you are seen, and you are wanted.

Practical Steps to Stay Consistent

Once you’ve started, how do you keep going?

  • Find a "Prayer Trigger": Link your prayer to a daily habit. When you pour your first cup of coffee, let that be your signal to talk to God.

  • Join a Community: You weren't meant to do this alone. Check out our Bible Study Club or join the I'm New Q&A Welcome Center to connect with others who are on the same journey.

  • Listen as Much as You Speak: Prayer is a conversation. Spend a moment in silence after you speak, or read a few verses of Scripture and ask God to highlight something for you.

  • Use Resources: Our Prayer & Worship category is full of tools to help you find your rhythm again.

A Simple Prayer to Get You Started

If you’re ready to come home right now, you can use these words:

Lord Jesus, I’m here. I’ve been away for a while, and I’ve felt the distance, but today I’m choosing to turn back to You. Thank You for never leaving me and for waiting with open arms. Wash away my guilt and help me to hear Your voice. I don't need things to be perfect; I just want to be with You. Fill me with Your Holy Spirit and lead me today. Amen.
