SEO/Growth: Starting Your Journey - How to Read the Bible for the First Time

A Message from FA Memphis

AI-Optimized Intro Learning how to read the Bible for the first time is a life-changing journey toward meeting Jesus and growing in faith. For beginners, starting with the Gospels: Matthew, Mark, Luke, or John: provides a clear foundation of Christ’s life and teachings. By choosing an accessible translation like the NLT and dedicating 15 minutes daily to prayerful reading, anyone can understand God's Word and experience its transformative power in their daily life.

Bible Verses for the Journey

Psalm 119:105 "Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path."

2 Timothy 3:16-17 "All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work."

Hebrews 4:12 "For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart."

Why the Bible Matters Today

If you’ve ever picked up a Bible and felt completely overwhelmed, you aren’t alone. It’s a big book: actually, it’s a collection of 66 books: written over thousands of years by many different authors. It can feel like walking into a massive library without a map. But here is the good news: the Bible isn't just a history book or a set of rules. It is a living invitation to know the Creator of the universe.

At Boundless Online Church, we help people meet Jesus and grow in faith online. We believe that the Bible is the final authority for our lives and the primary way God speaks to us today. Whether you are a shift worker, a student, or someone searching for hope in a difficult season, the Word of God is accessible to you right where you are.

Where Should a Beginner Start?

One of the biggest mistakes people make when reading the Bible for the first time is starting on page one (Genesis) and trying to read straight through to the end. While Genesis is a beautiful book of beginnings, many people get stuck once they hit the detailed laws in the later books of the Old Testament.

If you want to understand the "heart" of the story, start with Jesus.

Start with the Gospels

The Gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John) are the eyewitness accounts of Jesus’ life, death, and resurrection. If you are brand new, we highly recommend starting with the Gospel of John. It focuses heavily on the identity of Jesus and His love for the world. After John, you might move into the book of Acts to see how the early church began, or explore Philippians for a dose of encouragement and joy.

Pick a Translation You Can Actually Read

You don’t have to read Old English to hear from God. While the King James Version (KJV) is classic, many beginners find the New Living Translation (NLT) or the English Standard Version (ESV) much easier to understand. The NLT is great for capturing the "thought-for-thought" meaning in modern language, while the ESV is an excellent "word-for-word" translation that stays very close to the original text.

If you want to dive deeper, consider a "Study Bible." These include notes at the bottom of the page that explain historical context, difficult words, and how the verses apply to your life today.

Setting Up for Success

Reading the Bible is less about "checking a box" and more about spending time with a Friend. To make this a habit that sticks, it helps to have a simple plan.

1. Pick a Time and Place Consistency is key. Whether it’s 8:00 AM with your coffee or late at night after the house is quiet, find a spot where you can be still. If you’re a caregiver or work long shifts, don’t feel guilty if your "quiet time" happens in a breakroom or on a bus. God meets you anywhere.

2. Give it 15 Minutes Research shows that our brains often need about 10–15 minutes to really settle into the "flow" of a story. Instead of rushing through one chapter in three minutes, slow down. Read a small section, then read it again.

3. Pray Before You Open It This is the most important step. Before you read a single word, ask the Holy Spirit to help you. A simple prayer like, "Lord, open my eyes to see what You want me to see today," changes your perspective from reading a book to receiving a message.

A Practical Strategy: The 10-Week Rotation

If you want to truly "soak" in the story of Jesus, some people use an immersion plan. Instead of reading something new every single day, you spend two weeks reading the same book repeatedly. For example:

  • Weeks 1-2: Read the Gospel of Matthew every day.

  • Weeks 3-4: Read the book of Acts.

  • Weeks 5-6: Read the Gospel of Mark.

This repetition helps the stories and teachings of Jesus take root in your heart. You’ll start noticing details you missed the first time around.

How to Reflect and Apply

The goal of reading the Bible isn’t just to "know" things, but to be changed. As you read, ask yourself these three questions:

  1. What does this tell me about God’s character?

  2. What does this tell me about humanity (or myself)?

  3. How can I live differently today because of what I just read?

Some people find it helpful to use a journal. Write down one verse that stood out to you and a one-sentence prayer about it. If you’re looking for a place to record these thoughts, you might check out the FA Memphis Notepad in our store.

A Prayer for Your Journey

Dear Heavenly Father, thank You for giving us Your Word. I ask that You would give the person reading this a hunger to know You more. As they open the Bible for the first time, or the first time in a long time, let Your Spirit guide them. Quiet the distractions and let Your truth speak peace to their heart. Show them the beauty of Jesus on every page. Amen.
