The Boundless Daily: When God Shows Up in the Mundane

Let's talk about something you probably don't hear much about in church: the power of ordinary moments.

Most of us think spiritual breakthroughs happen during prayer meetings, worship nights, or mission trips.

And they do.

But here's what we miss: God is just as present when you're folding laundry, waiting in traffic, or making your third cup of coffee.

The Kingdom of God doesn't just show up in mountaintop experiences.

It shows up in kitchens. Break rooms. Bus stops. Hospital waiting rooms.

Jesus proved this throughout His ministry. He talked about God's Kingdom using bread, seeds, coins, and fish. Everyday stuff.

Not because He couldn't think of anything better.

But because He wanted us to see God in the everyday.

The Sacred in the Small

There's a verse in 1 Thessalonians that changed how I see my day:

"Pray continually." (1 Thessalonians 5:17)

Wait. Continually?

That seems impossible.

Unless you understand what Paul meant.

He wasn't saying you need to close your eyes and fold your hands 24/7.

He was inviting you into an ongoing conversation with God that runs underneath everything else you're doing.

Like background music.

Like breathing.

You can be loading the dishwasher and talking to God about your friend who's struggling.

You can be sitting in a work meeting and thanking God for provision.

You can be scrolling your phone and asking God to bless the people whose posts you see.

Prayer isn't just a formal event.

It's a relationship that never stops.

What This Looks Like in Real Life

Maybe you're reading this on your lunch break.

Or before your shift starts.

Or in the quiet after everyone else has gone to bed.

Wherever you are, here's the truth: God is with you right now.

Not waiting for you at church this weekend.

Not distant until you get your act together.

Right here. Right now.

With you.

The Bible says it this way:

"The Lord is near to all who call on him, to all who call on him in truth." (Psalm 145:18)

Near.

Not far off.

Not checking His watch wondering when you'll finally show up.

Near.

Practical Ways to Practice God's Presence

You don't need to overhaul your entire life to grow closer to God.

You just need to start noticing Him in what's already there.

1. Breath Prayers

These are short, one-sentence prayers you can repeat throughout your day.

"Jesus, help me love this person."

"God, give me wisdom."

"Thank You for being with me."

Simple. Repeatable. Powerful.

2. Gratitude Pauses

Set random alarms on your phone.

When one goes off, name one thing you're grateful for.

Out loud if you can.

Gratitude rewires your brain to notice God's goodness in real time.

3. Listening Walks

If you can, take a short walk.

Don't listen to music or a podcast.

Just walk. Notice. Listen.

Ask God, "What do You want to show me today?"

Then pay attention.

The Theology Behind the Practice

This isn't just feel-good advice.

This is rooted in what the Bible teaches about the Holy Spirit.

When you accept Jesus, the Holy Spirit lives in you. (1 Corinthians 6:19)

Not just visits occasionally.

Lives.

That means you carry God's presence everywhere you go.

Your workplace becomes a sanctuary.

Your home becomes a place of worship.

Your commute becomes a prayer room.

The Assemblies of God has always emphasized this truth: the Holy Spirit empowers believers for everyday life, not just Sunday services.

You're not waiting for a special moment to access God.

You're learning to recognize the access you already have.

When Life Doesn't Feel Sacred

Let's be honest. Some days are hard.

Some moments don't feel sacred at all.

You're exhausted. Frustrated. Overwhelmed.

And someone telling you to "find God in the ordinary" feels tone-deaf.

I get it.

But here's the thing: God doesn't show up only when life is Instagram-worthy.

He shows up in the mess.

In the grief.

In the confusion.

"The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit." (Psalm 34:18)

Practicing God's presence isn't about pretending everything is fine.

It's about bringing your real self: your tired, frustrated, doubting self: into conversation with a God who isn't scared of your honesty.

He can handle it.

Today's Challenge

Before this day ends, try this:

Pick one ordinary activity you'll do later.

Washing dishes. Driving somewhere. Taking a shower.

Before you start, say this out loud:

"God, I invite You into this moment. Help me notice You here."

Then see what happens.

Maybe nothing dramatic.

Maybe just a whisper of peace.

Maybe a thought you hadn't considered.

Maybe just the quiet knowing that you're not alone.

That's enough.

Moving Forward

The Christian life isn't about working harder to reach God.

It's about waking up to the God who's already reaching for you.

In every moment.

Every breath.

Every ordinary, beautiful, messy day.

You don't have to wait for Sunday.

You don't have to wait for a retreat.

You don't have to wait until you feel more spiritual.

God is here.

Now.

With you.
