The Gift of Wisdom: How to Make Godly Decisions

Making godly decisions means choosing to prioritize God’s will and His glory over our own personal desires. To make a decision that aligns with God’s heart, you must consistently seek His guidance through the study of Scripture, maintain an active prayer life, and listen for the promptings of the Holy Spirit. By leaning on God's understanding rather than your own, you ensure that your life’s direction remains focused on Christ.

The gift of wisdom is a divine enablement that allows believers to see life from God’s perspective and act accordingly. Making godly decisions involves a five-step process: grounding yourself in the Bible, engaging in persistent prayer, listening to the Holy Spirit, seeking wise counsel from the faith community, and assessing circumstances through a spiritual lens. This approach shifts the focus from "King Self" to "King Jesus," ensuring every choice serves God’s greater purpose.

Key Bible Verses for Wisdom

James 1:5 "If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him."

Proverbs 3:5-6 "Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths."

Psalm 119:105 "Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path."

Colossians 1:9 "For this reason we also, since the day we heard it, do not cease to pray for you, and to ask that you may be filled with the knowledge of His will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding."

Understanding the Gift of Wisdom

We all face crossroads. Some are small, like how to spend a Saturday morning, while others are life-altering, like choosing a career or a spouse. The question is rarely just "What should I do?" but rather "What does God want me to do?"

Wisdom isn't just about being smart or having a high IQ. In the Bible, wisdom is practical. It is the ability to apply God’s truth to everyday situations. As a ministry of FA Memphis, we believe that wisdom is a gift from the Holy Spirit. It’s not something we manufacture on our own; it’s something we receive when we position ourselves to hear from God.

When we talk about the "Gift of Wisdom," we are talking about a Spirit-empowered clarity. It’s that moment when the fog clears and you know: deep in your soul: the path you need to take.

Step 1: Replace "King Self" with "King Jesus"

The biggest hurdle to making godly decisions is often ourselves. We have a tendency to want what we want, when we want it. Our culture tells us to "follow our hearts," but the Bible reminds us that the heart can be deceptive.

To make a godly decision, you have to start by surrendering your own agenda. This means asking yourself: "Am I trying to please myself, or am I trying to please the Lord?"

When we step off the throne of our own lives and let Jesus lead, the pressure to "get it right" fades. We stop worrying about our own reputation and start caring about His glory.

Decisions determine direction, and direction determines destination. If your direction is pointed toward Jesus, your destination will always be where you need to be.

Step 2: Ground Your Choices in the Word

God will never lead you to do something that contradicts His Word. This is our primary safety net. If you are struggling with a decision, the first place you should look is the Bible.

Does the decision involve an ethical dilemma? Check the Word.

Does it involve how you treat others? Check the Word.

Does it involve your stewardship of time and money? Check the Word.

Sometimes, we look for a "feeling" or a "sign," but God has already given us a manual. Spending time in Scripture sharpens your discernment. It’s like training your ears to recognize a specific voice. The more you read the Bible, the easier it becomes to recognize the voice of the Good Shepherd.

Step 3: The Role of the Holy Spirit and Prayer

Your best decisions are birthed in an atmosphere of prayer. As believers, we have the incredible privilege of being empowered by the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is our Comforter and our Guide. He is the one who brings the Word to life and applies it to our specific circumstances.

Prayer isn’t just a grocery list of requests; it’s a conversation. It’s about sitting in God’s presence and saying, "Lord, I’m listening."

Often, we rush into decisions because we feel a sense of urgency. But God usually works in the stillness. When you pray, ask the Holy Spirit to reveal any motives that aren't of Him. Ask Him to give you a peace that passes understanding. If you don't have peace about a decision, it’s usually a good idea to wait.

Step 4: Seek Wise Counsel

We weren't meant to walk this path alone. God placed us in a community for a reason. Often, God uses other people to confirm what He is already telling us.

Seek out people who are further along in their faith. Talk to your small group, a mentor, or a pastor. Ask them to pray with you. Sometimes, an outside perspective can see the red flags that we are too emotionally invested to notice.

Proverbs tells us that there is safety in an abundance of counselors. If everyone you trust is telling you that a certain path seems dangerous, listen to them. Godly wisdom often flows through the body of Christ.

Step 5: Examine Your Circumstances

God is the master of the "open door" and the "closed door." While we shouldn't base our decisions only on circumstances, we should certainly pay attention to them. God is in control of every detail of your life: your limitations, your opportunities, and your timing.

If you are praying for a job but every door keeps slamming shut, it might be God’s way of saying "not yet" or "not there." Faith doesn't mean ignoring reality; it means seeing God’s hand within reality.

Assess your situation honestly. Does this decision make sense for your family? Does it align with the resources God has given you? God is a God of order, and His guidance usually makes sense when viewed through the lens of His sovereignty.

Moving Forward in Faith

Once you have prayed, studied the Word, and sought counsel, there comes a time when you have to step out.

Faith is the final ingredient. You may not have a 10-year plan, but you probably have enough light for the next step. Commit your way to the Lord, trust Him, and He will do it. Even if you make a mistake, God is big enough to redeem it. His grace is sufficient for every "wrong turn" we might accidentally take when our hearts are genuinely seeking Him.

A Prayer for Wisdom

Heavenly Father, I come to You today asking for the gift of wisdom. Your Word promises that if I ask, You will give it generously. Help me to lay down my own desires and seek Your glory first. Quiet the noise around me so I can hear the prompting of Your Holy Spirit. Give me the courage to follow where You lead, even when the path is uncertain. I trust that You are directing my steps. In Jesus' name, Amen.
