Think about the last time you tried navigating somewhere new without directions. Maybe your GPS cut out, or you couldn't remember which turn to take. That moment of uncertainty, when you're not quite sure which way to go, is unsettling, isn't it?
Now imagine trying to navigate life's biggest questions without a guide. What's right and wrong? How do we love well? What matters most?
Here's the beautiful truth: We don't have to guess. We have a map. And we have a lamp.
Welcome to the first truth in our Discipleship Pipeline, where we're building a foundation for raising kids who know where they're going because they know Who wrote the directions.
A Lamp for the Journey: Parent Devotional
Let's start here, parent to parent. Before we hand anything to our kids, we need to hold it ourselves.
Open your Bible to 2 Timothy 3:16-17. Read it slowly:
"All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work."
God-breathed. Not just inspired like a poet feels inspired by a sunset. This is different. This is the Creator of the universe breathing His truth into words, preserving them across thousands of years, and delivering them into your hands, so you can guide your family.

Here's what matters: The Bible isn't just a collection of nice stories or helpful advice. It's the infallible, authoritative Word of God. When we open Scripture with our kids, we're not just reading. We're listening to God speak.
And that changes everything.
Psalm 119:105 puts it this way: "Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path."
A lamp. Not a floodlight that reveals the entire journey at once. A lamp that shows you the next step. The next conversation. The next moment to teach truth.
Parent's Guidance Prayer
"Father, thank You for not leaving us to guess. Thank You for Your Word, living, active, and true. Help me to treasure it, teach it, and live it out before my children. Give me wisdom to know when to speak and when to listen. Let Your Word be the lamp that guides our family, one faithful step at a time. Amen."
Oliver and the Ancient Map: A Story for Your Kids
Now, gather your little ones. This is their story. Read it aloud slowly, with warmth and expression. Let the words breathe.
Oliver stood at the edge of Whispering Woods, his heart thumping like a drum. The trees stretched tall and thick, their branches tangling overhead like dark fingers. He'd never been this far from home before.
"Don't worry," his grandfather had said that morning, pressing something smooth and old into Oliver's hands. "This will show you the way."
It was a map. Not just any map, an ancient one, drawn on thick parchment that smelled like time and truth. Golden lines traced pathways through the forest. Small notes were written in the margins: "Trust the marked trail." "Light ahead." "You are not alone."
Oliver tucked the map into his jacket and stepped into the woods.

At first, the path was clear. Sunlight filtered through the leaves in golden beams. Birds sang cheerful songs. Oliver smiled. This is easy, he thought.
But then the forest grew darker.
The path split into three directions. Oliver stopped. His stomach twisted. Which way?
He pulled out the map. There, a clear golden line pointing to the left trail. Oliver followed it.
The trees pressed closer. Shadows stretched long. Oliver's hands trembled as he held the map tighter. The forest whispered strange sounds, rustling leaves, creaking branches, the distant call of something unknown.
"I don't like this," Oliver whispered.
But then he saw it: another note on the map, right where he stood. "When the path grows dark, trust the light I've given you."
Oliver looked down. The map itself seemed to glow faintly in the dim light, like a soft lantern guiding him forward.
He kept walking.
Around a bend, the path dropped into a steep valley. Oliver's feet slipped on loose stones. Fear pricked at his chest. What if I fall? What if I'm lost?
He unrolled the map again. There, near the valley, another note: "I have gone before you. Follow the marked stones."
Oliver looked closer. Small stones lined the path, each one marked with a tiny golden symbol. They led down the valley and up the other side.
He followed them. Step by step. Stone by stone.
And then: light.
Oliver emerged from the forest into a sunlit meadow. His grandfather stood waiting, arms open wide.
"You made it!" Grandfather laughed, pulling Oliver into a hug. "Did the map help?"
Oliver nodded, catching his breath. "It did. Every time I didn't know where to go, the map showed me. Even in the dark parts."
Grandfather knelt down, his eyes warm. "That's what the best maps do, Oliver. They're made by someone who knows the way. Someone who's been there before. Someone who cares enough to make sure you don't get lost."
Oliver looked at the map one more time. "Will I always have it?"
"Always," Grandfather said. "And the more you use it, the more you'll trust it. Because it's never wrong."
Supplemental Materials: Bringing the Story Home
Here's where we move from story to practice. These tools help your family internalize what Oliver learned.

You're not just teaching stories. You're handing them a lamp for the journey. And that lamp will never go out.
