The Return: Why We Look to the Sky with Hope

Have you ever caught yourself staring at a sunset, watching those deep oranges and purples bleed into the horizon, and felt a strange tug in your chest?
It’s that feeling of "there has to be more than this."
For believers, that feeling isn’t just a random emotion. It’s a homing beacon. It’s a deep-seated recognition that we are citizens of a different Kingdom, and our King has promised to come back for us.
At Boundless Online Church, we talk a lot about meeting Jesus and growing in faith online. But the ultimate "meeting" is the one we’re still waiting for, the physical, glorious return of Jesus Christ.
In the Assemblies of God, we call this "The Blessed Hope." It’s our 13th Fundamental Truth, and it’s the reason we look to the sky with a smile instead of fear.
The Promise That Changed Everything
Imagine being one of the disciples. You’ve seen Jesus heal the blind, walk on water, and literally beat death by walking out of a tomb. Then, as you’re standing on a hill, He starts to rise into the sky until the clouds hide Him from view.
You’re standing there, mouth open, neck craned back, wondering, "Now what?"
Then, two messengers in white appear and ask a great question: "Men of Galilee, why do you stand looking into heaven? This Jesus, who was taken up from you into heaven, will come in the same way as you saw him go into heaven" (Acts 1:11).
That one sentence changed the posture of the Church forever. We aren't a people who were left behind; we are a people who are waiting for a reunion.

What Exactly Is "The Blessed Hope"?
When we talk about the return of Christ, it’s easy to get bogged down in complicated charts and scary "end-of-the-world" movies. But the theology behind the Blessed Hope is actually very simple and incredibly beautiful.
The Blessed Hope refers to the resurrection of those who have died in Christ and their "translation" (or being caught up) together with those who are alive and remain unto the coming of the Lord.
It’s the great rescue. It’s the moment when the physical and the spiritual fully collide.
For the person working the late shift at a warehouse, for the caregiver who hasn't had a full night's sleep in years, and for the believer living in a place where it’s dangerous to own a Bible, this hope is everything. It means that the struggle has an expiration date.
Why We Look Up With Hope (Not Fear)
For some, the idea of "the end" sounds terrifying. But for the believer, it’s the beginning of everything we were actually made for. Here is why we look to the sky with hope:
1. The Completion of Our Salvation
Right now, we experience salvation in part. We have peace in our hearts, but our bodies still get sick. We have joy, but we still struggle with sin.
When Christ returns, salvation is finished.
We get the "full version." No more fighting against our own bad habits, no more depression, and no more aching joints. We are fully redeemed, inside and out.
2. The Great Reunion
We all have people we miss. The Blessed Hope tells us that those who "fell asleep" in Christ aren't gone; they’re just waiting. The return of Jesus is the catalyst for the greatest family reunion in history.
3. A World Made Right
We look at the news and see a lot of brokenness. Injustice, war, and pain seem to be everywhere. Looking to the sky with hope is an acknowledgment that the current "manager" of this world is being evicted.
When Jesus returns, He brings a Kingdom of perfect righteousness. He’s not just coming to take us away; He’s coming to eventually make all things new.

Living in the "In-Between"
So, if He’s coming back, do we just sit on our hands and wait?
Actually, it’s the opposite. The hope of His return should be the highest octane fuel for our lives today.
If you knew your best friend was flying in to visit you today, you wouldn't just sit on the porch. You’d clean the house, you’d prep the guest room, and you’d probably tell everyone you know, "Hey, they're almost here!"
That’s how we live out our faith at Boundless Online Church. We want to be found busy doing the work of the Kingdom.
We pray with urgency. You can see our focus on this in our Prayer and Worship section.
We grow in community. Whether it’s in our Bible Study Club or through local outreach, we stay connected.
We share the light. Because we know the King is coming, we want as many people as possible to be ready for the party.

For the Weary and the Waiting
We know that for many of you reading this, the "wait" feels heavy.
Maybe you’re a hospice caregiver watching a loved one fade. Maybe you’re a student feeling the weight of a world that seems to be losing its mind. Maybe you’re a shift worker who feels invisible to the rest of society.
To you, the Blessed Hope is a personal promise. Jesus said, "I will come again and will take you to myself, that where I am you may be also" (John 14:3).
You are not invisible. You are not forgotten. The sky that seems so silent right now is the very place where your rescue will appear.
The clouds aren't just weather; they are the driveway for the King.
How to Stay Ready
Staying ready isn't about being "weird" or moving to a mountain top. It’s about a relationship.
The best way to be ready for Jesus to return is to walk with Him today. Talk to Him in the morning. Lean on Him during your lunch break. Listen to His Word before you go to sleep.
If you’re looking for a way to deepen that walk, we invite you to check out our Faith and Discipleship resources. Digging into the Word keeps our eyes fixed on the right things.

A Final Thought
The next time you see a dramatic sunset or a wide-open field under a vast sky, let it be a reminder.
The world says, "Look at the ground and worry." The Spirit says, "Look at the sky and hope."
The Return is not just a doctrine. It’s the heartbeat of the Church. It’s the "Amen" to every prayer for justice and the "Hallelujah" to every moment of joy.
He is coming. And it will be more beautiful than we can imagine.
Do you have questions about what this means for your life? Or maybe you just need someone to stand in faith with you while you wait for your own "blessed hope" in a difficult situation. We are here for you.
We help people meet Jesus and grow in faith online. No matter where you are or what time your shift starts, you have a place here.
