Unlimited Access: Digital Discipleship - Growing Faith Online

Have you ever looked at your smartphone and felt like it was the biggest distraction in your life? Between the constant notifications, the endless scrolling, and the noise of the world, it can feel like our digital lives are pulling us further away from God.

But what if we flipped the script?

What if that device in your pocket wasn't a distraction, but a gateway? What if the same technology that connects us to the news and social media could also connect us more deeply to the Creator of the universe?

That’s exactly what we’re exploring today in our Unlimited Access series. We’re talking about Digital Discipleship. We help people meet Jesus and grow in faith online, and that means looking at our digital tools as modern-day mission fields and spiritual classrooms.

Whether you are a shift worker who can't make a Sunday morning service, someone living in an area where it’s unsafe to carry a physical Bible, or a busy parent trying to find five minutes of peace, digital discipleship is for you.

What is Digital Discipleship, Really?

At its heart, discipleship is the process of becoming more like Jesus. It’s about learning His teachings, following His lead, and sharing His love with others. Traditionally, this happened in living rooms or church pews.

Digital discipleship doesn't replace that: it expands it. It uses digital tools like mobile apps, websites, and livestreams to facilitate that same spiritual growth. It recognizes that God’s Spirit isn't limited by physical boundaries or time zones.

As we believe in the Assemblies of God, the Bible is our all-sufficient rule for faith and practice. Whether you read those inspired words on a goatskin-bound Bible or a glowing OLED screen, the truth remains the same. The Word is alive and active.

The Digital Quiet Time: Setting the Stage

One of the first practical steps in growing your faith online is reclaiming your "quiet time." For years, we’ve been told that a quiet time must happen in a specific chair with a specific notebook. While those are great, digital tools allow you to have a "sanctuary in your pocket."

Start by choosing one or two resources that ground you in the Word. If you’re looking for a place to start, check out The Boundless Daily. Having a structured plan helps you avoid the "aimless scroll."

Instead of checking the news first thing in the morning, open a devotional app or a Bible study guide. This aligns with our first Fundamental Truth: the Bible is inspired by God. By starting your day with digital scripture, you are acknowledging that God's Word is the foundation of your life.

Community in the Cloud

You weren't meant to follow Jesus alone. We believe that the church is the body of Christ, and that body is made up of people, not just buildings.

In the digital world, community looks like jumping into a live worship service where the chat is buzzing with people praying for one another. It looks like joining one of our online groups where you can discuss the week’s message with people from across the globe.

Think about the global reach of this. Right now, there is a nurse on a break in London, a student in Tokyo, and a stay-at-home parent in Memphis all studying the same scripture together. This is the beauty of digital discipleship: it breaks down the walls of isolation.

5 Practical Steps to Grow Your Faith Online

If you want to move from being a passive consumer to an active digital disciple, here are five steps you can take today:

1. Curate Your Feed Your social media feed is a reflection of what you value. If your feed is filled with things that cause anxiety or envy, start hitting that "unfollow" button. Replace those accounts with ministries and voices that point you toward Jesus.

2. Schedule Your Growth Just like you’d schedule a gym session or a work meeting, schedule your digital discipleship. Maybe it’s a 15-minute podcast during your commute or a Daily Parent Devotional during your lunch break. Consistency is key to spiritual formation.

3. Engage, Don't Just Watch When you join a livestream, don't just let it play in the background while you fold laundry. Lean in. Use the chat feature to share what God is speaking to you. If you see a prayer request on the Prayer Wall, stop and pray right then. Active engagement turns a video into a worship experience.

4. Use AI as a Study Tool (Safely) Technology is a gift when used with wisdom. You can use AI to help find cross-references in scripture or to summarize complex theological topics. However, remember to always cross-check everything with the Bible. If you want to dive deeper into this, we have an Ultimate Guide to AI and Faith that walks you through how to use these tools for the Kingdom.

5. Share the Light Digital discipleship isn't just about your growth; it’s about others, too. When a verse hits you hard, share it. When a sermon answers a question you've been struggling with, send the link to a friend. You never know who is scrolling through their darkest day and needs to see the light of Christ on their screen.

Reaching the Unreached

One of the most powerful aspects of digital discipleship is how it fulfills the Great Commission. Jesus told us to go into all the world and preach the gospel. In 2026, "all the world" includes the digital world.

There are people in "closed" countries where they cannot walk into a church building. There are people with disabilities who cannot physically navigate a traditional sanctuary. There are those working third shifts who are sleeping when the local church bells ring.

Digital discipleship offers Unlimited Access to the message of hope. We believe in the "Blessed Hope": the resurrection of those who have fallen asleep in Christ and their translation together with those who are alive and remain unto the coming of the Lord. This is an urgent mission. We want to reach as many people as possible, as fast as possible, using every tool at our disposal.

Guarding Your Digital Heart

As we grow in our faith online, we also have to be mindful of the risks. The digital world can be a place of comparison, misinformation, and temptation.

Growing in faith requires protecting your peace. We highly recommend checking out our guide on Digital Safety 101 to help you and your family navigate the web with wisdom and biblical integrity. Remember, your digital footprints are a testimony. How you interact with others online should reflect the fruit of the Spirit: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.

Your Next Step

Growing your faith online doesn't have to be complicated. It starts with a simple decision to use your time and your technology for God's glory.

Maybe your next step is joining a group. Maybe it's finally starting that Bible reading plan you've been putting off. Or maybe it's reaching out because you have questions about who Jesus is and what it means to follow Him.

We are here for you. Whether you're in Memphis or on the other side of the planet, you are part of this community.

Boundless Online Church is a ministry of FA Memphis.
