We Are Never Alone: How FA Memphis Walks Beside You (In Person and Online)

Walking into a new church can feel like stepping into someone else's family reunion. You know you're invited, but you're not quite sure where you fit in. At FA Memphis, Dr. Layne McDonald and our entire Connect and Online Ministries team understand this feeling deeply: because many of us have been there too.

"The truth is, God never intended for us to navigate life alone," says Dr. McDonald, who serves as Pastor for Connect and Online Ministries at FA Memphis Church. "Whether someone walks through our doors on Walnut Grove Road or joins us online through Boundless Online Church, our heart is the same: to help people experience the love and community that God intends for His people."

The Heart Behind True Welcome

First Assembly Memphis Community

Real welcome isn't about having the perfect coffee bar or the slickest welcome center (though ours isn't bad!). It's about seeing people the way God sees them: as beloved children who deserve to be known, valued, and included in the family.

Dr. McDonald often reminds our volunteer teams: "We're not just greeting visitors; we're introducing them to their spiritual family." This perspective shift changes everything. Instead of focusing on what we can get from newcomers, we focus on what we can give them: genuine connection, authentic community, and a place to grow in their relationship with Christ.

At FA Memphis, we've discovered that authentic welcome happens when people feel three things: seen, safe, and significant. Whether someone joins us in person at our Cordova campus or connects with us online, these three pillars guide everything we do.

Creating "Seen" Moments In Person

The first thirty seconds matter more than we'd like to admit. When someone new walks into FA Memphis, our goal is simple: make sure they know they've been noticed and that their presence matters.

Our parking lot volunteers don't just direct traffic: they're often the first faces people see. We train them to make eye contact, smile genuinely, and offer a simple "Good morning! Welcome to FA Memphis." It's a small gesture, but it says, "You belong here."

Inside, our Connect Team doesn't just hand out bulletins. They look for the telltale signs of first-time visitors: the couple looking around uncertainly, the single mom juggling kids and a diaper bag, the teenager who came reluctantly with grandparents. These are the moments when a warm "Can I help you find anything?" or "Is this your first time here?" can transform someone's entire church experience.

Building Safe Spaces Online and Off

First Assembly Memphis Fellowship

Safety isn't just about physical security: it's about emotional and spiritual safety too. People need to know they can ask questions, express doubts, and be honest about their struggles without judgment.

Our Boundless Online Church community has become a beautiful example of this. Through our online platform, people who might never feel comfortable walking into a physical building can connect with others, ask prayer requests, and participate in Bible studies from the comfort of their own homes. Dr. McDonald notes, "Some of our most authentic community moments happen in our online small groups. There's something about connecting from home that allows people to be more vulnerable and real."

In person, we create safe spaces through our various ministry groups. Whether it's our GriefShare support group, our young couples' gatherings, or our senior adult activities, each group operates on the principle that everyone's story matters and everyone's journey is valid.

Making People Feel Significant

The difference between feeling welcome and feeling like you belong often comes down to significance: knowing that your presence adds value to the community. At FA Memphis, we intentionally create opportunities for people to contribute their gifts and talents from day one.

"We don't make people wait six months to serve," explains Dr. McDonald. "If someone has a heart to help, we find ways to connect them with meaningful opportunities immediately. Maybe they can't teach Sunday school yet, but they can help with our Mother's Day Out program or assist with our community outreach events."

Our online community offers similar opportunities. People can lead virtual prayer groups, moderate discussion forums, or help with social media outreach. The platform doesn't matter: what matters is that everyone has a chance to use their God-given gifts to build up the body of Christ.

Practical Steps for Volunteers and Staff

First Assembly Memphis Church Gathering

Creating an atmosphere where "we are never alone" isn't just about having good intentions: it requires intentional action. Here are practical steps our volunteers and staff use to make welcome authentic:

Before Services Begin:

  • Arrive 15 minutes early to be fully present for early arrivals

  • Pray together as a team, asking God to help you see people through His eyes

  • Position yourselves where you can naturally interact with newcomers without being overwhelming

During Interactions:

  • Use people's names as soon as you learn them: and remember them the following week

  • Ask open-ended questions: "What brought you to FA Memphis today?" instead of "Is this your first time?"

  • Listen more than you talk; people want to be heard, not sold to

Following Up:

  • Send a personal text or email within 48 hours (with permission)

  • Invite them to specific events or groups based on their interests

  • Connect them with someone who shares similar life circumstances

Real Stories of Connection

Sarah's story illustrates how powerful authentic welcome can be. She started attending our online services during the pandemic, feeling isolated after a difficult divorce. Through our virtual small groups, she connected with other women who understood her journey. When she finally felt ready to visit in person, several of her online friends were there to greet her. "I wasn't walking into a room full of strangers," she says. "I was coming home to family."

Then there's Mike, a retiree who felt lost after his career ended. Our Connect Team noticed his background in construction and connected him with our facilities ministry. Now he leads volunteer workdays and mentors younger men in both practical skills and spiritual growth. "I thought retirement meant I was done being useful," Mike reflects. "FA Memphis showed me God wasn't finished with me yet."

Growing Together in Christ Jesus

First Assembly Memphis Worship

The ultimate goal of welcome isn't just to fill seats or boost numbers: it's to help people grow in their relationship with Christ and with each other. This happens through authentic relationships, consistent Bible study, meaningful prayer, and serving together in ministry.

Dr. McDonald emphasizes that spiritual growth is rarely a solo journey: "We grow best when we're growing together. Whether that's in a life group, a service project, or just grabbing coffee after church, God uses our relationships with each other to shape us into who He wants us to become."

Our approach to community building: both online and in person: recognizes that everyone is at a different place in their spiritual journey. New believers need patient mentors. Long-time Christians need fresh challenges. People in crisis need immediate support. Young families need practical help. Single adults need authentic friendship. We don't try to be everything to everyone, but we do try to help everyone find their place in the family.

Moving Forward Together

The message "we are never alone" isn't just a nice saying: it's a lived reality when the church functions as God intended. At FA Memphis, whether you connect with us at 8650 Walnut Grove Road or join our Boundless Online Church community, you'll find people committed to walking alongside you in your faith journey.

As Dr. McDonald often says, "Church isn't a building or a service time: it's a family on mission together. When we live that out authentically, no one has to face life's challenges alone."

Your story matters. Your journey has value. Your presence makes our community stronger. Whether you're just beginning to explore faith or you've been following Christ for decades, there's a place for you in our family.
