What Are 10 Simple Jesus-Centered Habits to Change My Week?

Updated: Feb 26

Busy working adults (Memphis/901)

Ten simple Jesus-centered habits can change your week by keeping you close to Scripture, prayer, Spirit-led obedience, and everyday repentance. These practices aren’t about earning God’s love—they’re about sanctification: letting the Holy Spirit reshape your desires, words, and choices day by day.

Why I’m Sharing This (Memphis + Boundless)

I want to help us take real, doable steps toward Jesus—whether you’re juggling work and family in the 901 or you’re joining us through Boundless Online Church from anywhere.

1. Morning devotions: start before screens

I take 5–10 minutes with Scripture before I touch my phone. I like to read a Gospel story or a Psalm and ask, “Jesus, what are You showing me about You—and what are You inviting me to obey today?”

Try this: Put your Bible on the nightstand and set your alarm 10 minutes earlier.

2. Intentional prayer all day (plus praying in the Spirit)

I treat prayer like an ongoing conversation with God. And as a Pentecostal church, I also make room to pray in the Spirit (1 Corinthians 14:2, 14–15; Jude 20)—especially when I don’t have the words.

Try this: Set three reminders. At each one, pause 60 seconds to pray: “Father, lead me,” then pray in the Spirit as you’re able.

3. The presence test for decisions

Before I say it, click it, buy it, or binge it, I ask: “If Jesus was right here beside me, would I still do this?” That question isn’t about shame—it’s about direction.

Use it for: Social media, entertainment, workplace convos, spending, relationships.

4. Gratitude before meals (small, consistent worship)

I pause before I eat and thank God for His provision. It’s simple, but it turns a normal moment into worship (Colossians 3:17).

Try this: Keep it short (30–45 seconds). If you’re eating with others, rotate who prays.

5. Daily service to one person

Every day, I try to serve one person on purpose. Sanctification isn’t only private—it shows up in love, humility, and action (James 2:17).

Ideas:

  • Make coffee for a coworker

  • Send a quick encouragement text

  • Help a neighbor with a task

  • Pay for someone’s drink

  • Give 30 minutes to serve somewhere in Memphis when you can

6. Immediate confession + quick turn back to Jesus

When I realize I’ve sinned—attitude, words, choices—I confess it right then (1 John 1:9). Not because I’m trying to “stay saved,” but because I want a clear conscience and a soft heart. This is part of practical sanctification (AG Fundamental Truth #9).

How I do it: Name it, receive God’s forgiveness, and choose one “next step” to avoid it next time.

7. Gratitude reflection before sleep

Before bed, I call out three specific ways God helped me that day. It rewires my mind toward faith instead of stress (Philippians 4:6–8).

Try this: Write it down or say it out loud with your spouse/roommate—specific beats general.

8. Listen for God’s voice (with Scripture as the anchor)

I build space to listen. The Holy Spirit leads us, comforts us, and convicts us—and He will never contradict God’s Word (John 16:13; 2 Timothy 3:16–17).

Try this: After reading Scripture, sit in quiet for 2 minutes and ask: “Holy Spirit, what are You highlighting?” Write down what you sense, then weigh it against Scripture and wise counsel.

9. Weekly giving decision (stewardship with a soft heart)

Once a week, I make one giving decision—money, time, or resources—because generosity keeps my heart free (2 Corinthians 9:7).

Options:

  • Give to your local church

  • Meet a practical need

  • Volunteer time

  • Donate items

  • Mentor/encourage someone

10. Daily surrender to the Holy Spirit (the “yes” habit)

This one is huge: I practice daily surrender. I literally pray, “Holy Spirit, I’m Yours. Lead me today.” Sanctification is lifelong, and surrender is where growth actually happens (Galatians 5:16, 22–25).

Try this: Before you walk into work or school, pause and say: “Holy Spirit, fill me and lead me.” Then obey the next right thing.

Simple implementation strategy (don’t overwhelm yourself)

I recommend choosing three habits for this week instead of trying all ten at once. Once those three feel steady, add one more.

Track it: Notes app, journal, or a friend who’ll check in. Consistency matters more than perfection. If you miss a day, don’t spiral—restart the next moment.

Community support (Memphis + the Boundless bridge)

I grow faster when I’m not doing this alone. If you’re in Memphis, Cordova, Arlington, Bartlett, or the 901, I’d love for you to be part of what God is doing in person at FA Memphis—real worship, real community, real discipleship.

If you’re outside the area, homebound, deployed, traveling, or just not able to attend locally, Boundless Online Church is a bridge—a way to pursue Jesus and grow with others from anywhere: www.boundlessonlinechurch.org. And if there’s a healthy local church near you, I always encourage you to plug in there too.
