What Does “Assembly of God” Mean? Beliefs and Distinctives Explained

Welcome home, friend! Whether you grew up in Memphis hearing about the Assemblies of God or just stumbled across us online, you might be wondering: What’s this church all about? What do we actually believe, and are we really that different from other Christians? Let’s get comfy and walk through what makes the Assemblies of God (AG) tick, especially here in Memphis, where faith and family run deep.

The Story Starts: Why the “Assembly of God”?

Let’s rewind to a time before streaming church services (or, honestly, even radio broadcasts). In April 1914, about 300 people, pastors and everyday folks, gathered in Hot Springs, Arkansas. Their heart? To unite passionate, Spirit-filled Christians under some shared beliefs and a shared mission. That gathering turned into the Assemblies of God, now one of the world’s largest Pentecostal families, with more than 57 million people worldwide.

Memphis has its own rich chapter in that story. Churches here have always been about opening doors to seekers, embracing diversity, and letting the Holy Spirit surprise us again and again in worship, service, and day-to-day life.

Our Core Beliefs, Memphis-Style

Let’s break it down in plain language. If you’ve ever felt overwhelmed by church lingo or just want the “Why does this matter?” bottom line, this is for you.

1. The Bible: Our True North

Simply put: We believe the Bible is inspired by God, our GPS for faith and daily living. What it means here in Memphis: Whether folks are huddled in downtown coffee shops or sharing family dinners in Cordova, we come back to Scripture as our anchor, not just tradition or opinion.

  • We don’t believe the Bible is just an old book of rules, but the living story God shares with us.

  • If you’re new to faith and don’t know where to start, that’s okay! Join in at our Bible study group. There are no dumb questions, just honest searching.

2. Salvation: A New Start for Everyone

Bottom line: We all mess up. But God offers forgiveness and a fresh start through Jesus. How we live it locally: Memphis knows about second chances. In AG churches, you’ll hear stories of people who found freedom and hope even after big mistakes.

  • “Salvation” isn’t just saying a prayer. It’s choosing trust in what Jesus did, for real change.

  • We believe it’s for EVERYONE: young, old, rich, struggling, spiritual, or skeptical.

3. The Holy Spirit: God Up Close and Powerful

Why it matters: Life gets messy, and sometimes you feel alone. The Holy Spirit is God with us, helping and guiding every moment.

  • We believe everyone can be filled (“baptized”) with the Holy Spirit, just like in the book of Acts.

  • This sometimes shows up in beautiful ways, like speaking in tongues. We don’t expect you to have it all figured out or to fake it. It’s a gift from God, not a performance!

  • You’ll see people pray for healing, hope, or wisdom and expect God to answer, sometimes in ways that will stretch your faith and your imagination.

Signature Practices That Set Us Apart

You might wonder: What do Assemblies of God churches actually do that’s a little different? Here’s the real-world stuff that makes AG unique.

Embracing the Supernatural, With Both Feet on the Ground

  • It’s not unusual to hear someone pray for healing or share what they feel God is saying, a Spirit-led life isn’t reserved for “super Christians.” It’s for all of us!

  • Prophecy, healing, words of knowledge… These aren’t party tricks. They’re tools God uses to love people well.

Speaking in Tongues: What’s Up With That?

  • AG folks believe speaking in tongues, using a spiritual language you haven’t learned, is God’s way of confirming the Holy Spirit’s presence and empowering you for purpose.

  • Not everyone “gets it” at the same time, and no one is ever pressured.

Water Baptism: Outward Sign of an Inward Change

  • Once you decide to follow Jesus, you’ll notice we do baptisms, by full dunking! It’s a fresh start, a public sign that your old life is washed away and a new one is beginning.

  • If you’re interested, let us know here and let’s celebrate together.

Why Community Matters: Memphis and Beyond

Assemblies of God churches love gathering, we eat, serve, laugh, and grow together.

  • Whether it’s worship under the steeple, a service project in the city, or a digital hangout here at Boundless, we believe faith is meant to be lived together.

  • We value diversity. The Memphis Assemblies of God family reflects many cultures, backgrounds, and generations, all united by Jesus.

Living on Purpose: The Great Commission

If you hang around AG people for any length of time, you’ll hear about “missions.” This isn’t just about sending a few folks overseas (though we do that, too).

  • Every church, every member is called to bring hope to our neighborhoods and the world.

  • From food pantries in Midtown to digital outreach (yes, even TikTok and podcasts!), we believe being a Christian means making a practical difference.
