What is heaven like? Glimpses of Our Eternal Home

Heaven is the literal dwelling place of God, a realm of perfect peace, joy, and the total absence of all suffering. Described in Scripture as the New Jerusalem, it features stunning beauty and the direct presence of Jesus Christ. For the believer, heaven is not just a destination but a promised eternal home where we will serve God and live in His glory forever.

Bible Verses to Carry in Your Heart

Revelation 21:4 "He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away."

John 14:2-3 "In my Father’s house are many rooms; if it were not so, I would have told you. I am going there to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am."

1 Corinthians 2:9 "However, as it is written: 'What no eye has seen, what no ear has heard, and what no human mind has conceived', the things God has prepared for those who love him."

Revelation 21:21 "The twelve gates were twelve pearls, each gate made of a single pearl. The great street of the city was of gold, as pure as transparent glass."

Understanding Our Eternal Home

When we talk about heaven, it’s easy to get lost in cartoons of people sitting on fluffy clouds playing harps. But the Bible gives us a much more vibrant, physical, and exciting picture of what awaits those who follow Jesus.

Heaven is a real place. It is a realm where God’s throne is established, and where Jesus is currently preparing a space for us. Whether you are reading this while working a late-night shift, navigating a difficult health diagnosis, or simply seeking answers about the afterlife, the hope of heaven is meant to be a steady anchor for your soul.

The Physical Beauty of the New Jerusalem

The Book of Revelation gives us the most detailed "tour" of heaven, specifically describing the New Jerusalem. Imagine a city that glows with the very glory of God. It isn't lit by a sun or a moon; instead, the light of Jesus, the Lamb, illuminates everything.

The descriptions are breathtaking. We read about walls made of precious stones like jasper, sapphire, and emerald. We hear about gates made of single, massive pearls and streets made of gold so pure it looks like transparent glass. This isn't just about wealth; it’s about a level of purity and beauty that we can’t even fully grasp in our current world.

Within this city, there is a river of the water of life, as clear as crystal, flowing from the throne of God. On each side of the river stands the tree of life, bearing fruit every month. This tells us that heaven is a place of abundance, life, and constant refreshing. It is a return to the paradise God intended for us from the very beginning.

A Place of "No Mores"

For many of us, the most beautiful thing about heaven isn't the gold or the pearls, it’s what isn't there.

The Bible calls heaven a place of "no mores." There will be no more death. No more mourning. No more crying. No more pain. Think about that for a second. Every struggle you face today, whether it’s physical pain, emotional heartbreak, or the sting of losing a loved one, will be completely absent in heaven.

This is what the Assemblies of God refers to as the Blessed Hope. It is the confident expectation that Jesus is coming back for His people and that we will be transformed to live in His presence forever. You can read more about this in our 16 Fundamental Truths.

If you are a caregiver exhausted by the demands of the day, or if you are living in an area where you don't feel safe, heaven is the promise that your struggle has an expiration date. God sees every tear you shed, and He has personally promised to wipe them away.

What Will We Do in Heaven?

A common question people ask is, "Will I be bored in heaven?" The answer is a resounding no!

Heaven is a place of activity and purpose. The Bible says we will serve God there. We will worship Him, but we will also likely have responsibilities and roles. We will be part of a community: the "innumerable company of angels" and the "spirits of the righteous made perfect."

It is a place of fellowship. We will be reunited with those who have gone before us in faith. We will talk, learn, and explore the infinite riches of God’s grace. Because God is infinite, our journey of knowing Him will never truly end. We will spend eternity discovering new depths of His love and creativity.

The Presence of God: The Ultimate Reward

While the streets of gold are amazing, they aren't the main attraction. The greatest thing about heaven is that we will be with God.

In our current life, we see God "through a glass, darkly." We experience Him through prayer, through the Word, and through the Holy Spirit, but in heaven, we will see Him face to face. The barrier created by sin is gone. The distance is closed. We will live in the direct, unfiltered presence of our Creator.

This is the heart of faith and discipleship. We aren't just trying to "get to heaven" as a destination; we are following a Person. Heaven is simply where that Person lives.

A Global Hope for Everyone

At Boundless Online Church, we believe that the message of heaven is for everyone, everywhere. It doesn't matter your background, your past mistakes, or your current location. Jesus has opened the way to the Father’s house for anyone who puts their trust in Him.

For those living in persecuted areas or those who feel isolated, know that you have a permanent home waiting for you. This world is temporary, but the "New Heavens and the New Earth" are eternal. This is a core part of our mission as we help people meet Jesus and grow in faith online.

How Should We Live Today?

Knowing what heaven is like should change the way we live right now. It gives us a different perspective on our problems. When we realize that our life on earth is just a "vapor" compared to eternity, we can endure hardships with more courage.

It also gives us a sense of urgency. If heaven is this wonderful, we want as many people as possible to be there with us! That’s why we share the Gospel and why we invite you to join us for Sunday Sermons or dive into a Bible Study.

Do you have questions about how to be sure you’re going to heaven? Or maybe you just need someone to talk to about the hope we have in Christ? We invite you to reach out. Your questions are always welcome here.
