What is the secret to finding extra strength on the days I feel like I'm failing as a parent?

The secret to navigating the overwhelming moments of parenting is found in the Baptism in the Holy Spirit, which provides us with a distinct and divine empowerment to live, love, and lead our families with a strength that is not our own. When we reach the end of our patience, our wisdom, and our energy, God does not ask us to simply "try harder." Instead, He offers us an overflowing source of supernatural help that transforms our daily exhaustion into a testimony of His grace.
We’ve all been there. It’s 5:00 PM, the kitchen floor is a mosaic of cereal and sticky handprints, and the noise level has reached a frequency only dogs and weary parents can hear. In those moments, the "I’m failing" whisper starts to echo in your heart. You feel like you’re running on a battery that’s been at 1% for three days straight. You might even find yourself asking the heavy questions we explore in our study, Where is God when it hurts?. But here is the beautiful truth: your weakness is not a barrier to your parenting; it is the very place where God’s power loves to show up.
Scripture: Acts 1:8
"But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth."
Reflection: Power for the Living Room
In the Assemblies of God, we hold dearly to Fundamental Truth #7: The Baptism in the Holy Spirit. Often, when we think of this "power," we imagine grand stages, miraculous healings, or ancient apostles. But the promise of Acts 1:8 isn't just for the mission field in a far-off country; it is for the mission field of your living room. The Holy Spirit is described as our Comforter, our Advocate, and our Helper. If there is anyone who needs a divine Helper, it is a parent trying to navigate the complex emotions and spiritual growth of a child.
Parenting is, by definition, a work of service. It is the long-game of discipleship. And according to our faith tradition, the Baptism in the Holy Spirit is given specifically to empower us for life and service. This isn't about feeling "spiritual" or having a one-time emotional experience. It is about a daily, walking partnership with the Spirit of God. When you feel like you are failing, it’s usually because you are trying to parent out of your own limited resource of "goodness." But the Spirit offers a fruit basket, love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control, that never runs dry.

Think of it this way: the Holy Spirit is like the wind in the sails of a weary rowboat. You’ve been rowing with all your might, your arms are aching, and you’re barely moving against the current of toddler tantrums or teenage rebellion. The Baptism in the Holy Spirit is the moment you stop rowing and let the wind of God take the weight. You are still the parent, you are still "steering" the boat, but the power moving you forward is no longer your own muscle. It is a gift. It is grace in action.
This divine empowerment helps us see our children not as "problems to be solved" but as "souls to be nurtured." It gives us the "extra strength" to respond with a gentle word when we want to yell, and the wisdom to know when to hold tight and when to let go. Action: Five Minutes of Filling
Today, don't wait until you are at your breaking point to ask for help. Take five minutes, perhaps while the coffee is brewing or while you’re sitting in the driveway before heading inside. Sit in silence. Close your eyes and breathe deeply. Don't present God with a "to-do" list. Instead, simply say: "Holy Spirit, I am empty. Please fill me. I need Your power to love my family today." Let that silence be a container for His presence.
Prayer for Power and Peace
"Holy Spirit, thank You for being my Helper. I admit that today I feel small and overwhelmed. I feel like I'm failing to be the parent my children deserve. But I thank You that Your power is made perfect in my weakness. Fill me afresh today. Give me the extra strength to be patient, the wisdom to speak truth, and the peace that passes understanding. Let my home be a place where Your light shines brightly. Amen."
Family Question
"How can we tell when God is helping us do something we couldn't do by ourselves?" (Talk about this at dinner tonight: you might be surprised by the "superpowers" your kids have noticed in you or themselves!)

Parent Discussion Guide
**Heart of the Story:** This devotional reminds us that we aren't meant to parent in isolation or by our own strength. We have a Helper.
**Theological Roots:** AG Truth #7 – The Baptism in the Holy Spirit provides empowerment for life and service.
**Age-Specific Questions:**
* **Ages 3–6:** "When you feel sad or tired, who can we talk to? Did you know God loves to give you 'strong-heart' hugs from the inside?"
* **Ages 7–9:** "Have you ever had to do something really hard, like a math test or a sports game, and felt like you couldn't do it? How does it feel to know God wants to help you?"
* **Ages 10–12:** "The Bible says the Holy Spirit gives us power to be 'witnesses.' How can the way we treat each other at home be a 'witness' to our neighbors?"
Hands-On Faith: The "Overflowing Cup" Activity
**Items needed:** A tray, a clear glass, and a pitcher of water.
**The Script:** "Sometimes we feel like this empty glass. We give our love, our chores, and our time away until there is nothing left. (Show the empty glass). But the Holy Spirit is like this pitcher of water. When we ask Him to fill us, He doesn't just give us a little bit. He fills us until we overflow! (Pour water until it spills over onto the tray). Now, we have plenty to give to others because God keeps pouring into us."
