What is Repentance?

Internal Audience: Tier 2 – Seekers and Skeptics

Repentance is a complete change of mind and heart that turns you away from sin and toward God. It's not just feeling bad about getting caught, it's genuine sorrow for your actions, a decision to change direction, and a commitment to follow Jesus. True repentance transforms how you think, feel, and live.

Why This Matters for Memphis (and Beyond)

At First Assembly Memphis, we believe transformation is possible for anyone. Whether you're in Cordova, East Memphis, or anywhere in the 901, the message is the same: God offers you a fresh start. Repentance isn't about shame or punishment, it's about freedom. It's the doorway to a completely new life, and it's available to you right now.

This same hope extends globally through Boundless Online Church, our digital outreach ministry. No matter where you are, repentance opens the path to healing, restoration, and a vibrant relationship with God.

What Repentance Actually Means

Let's clear up some confusion. The word "repentance" comes from the Greek word metanoia, which literally means "change of mind." But biblical repentance goes way deeper than just thinking differently. It involves your entire being, your thoughts, your emotions, and your actions.

Here's what true repentance looks like:

1. Changing Your Mind About Sin

Repentance starts when you stop treating sin like a harmless hobby and start seeing it for what it really is, destructive, harmful, and offensive to a holy God. You move from justifying your behavior ("It's not that bad") to recognizing it's actually damaging your life and your relationship with God.

This doesn't mean you'll never be tempted again. It means you stop making excuses and start taking sin seriously.

2. Changing Your Mind About God

Real repentance involves a shift in how you view God. Maybe you've seen Him as a cosmic killjoy, a distant judge, or an indifferent force. Repentance opens your eyes to the truth: God is righteous, holy, just, and deeply loving. He's not waiting to zap you, He's waiting to restore you.

You begin to understand that God's standards aren't arbitrary rules designed to ruin your fun. They're loving boundaries meant to protect you and help you flourish.

3. Changing Your Mind About Yourself

This one stings a bit, but it's essential. Repentance requires honesty about your condition. You have to agree with God that you're guilty, that you can't fix yourself through self-improvement projects or good deeds, and that you desperately need a Savior.

It's humbling, yes. But it's also liberating. Once you stop pretending you've got it all together, you can finally receive the grace God has been offering all along.

4. Changing Your Mind About Jesus

Finally, repentance means recognizing that Jesus Christ is your only hope. His righteousness, His forgiveness, His sacrificial death and resurrection, that's the only source of salvation available to you. No amount of religious activity, moral effort, or spiritual striving can save you. Only Jesus can.

When you repent, you're not just turning from something (sin). You're turning to Someone (Jesus). That's the heart of the gospel.

Is Repentance Really Necessary for Salvation?

Short answer: Yes.

The Bible is crystal clear on this. In Acts 2:38, Peter tells the crowd, "Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins." In Luke 13:3, Jesus Himself says, "Unless you repent, you too will all perish."

Repentance and faith are inseparable, they're two sides of the same coin. You can't genuinely place your faith in Jesus without first changing your mind about your sin and about who He is. That's what repentance is all about.

And here's the beautiful part: true repentance is prompted by "godly sorrow," and it "leads to salvation" (2 Corinthians 7:10). It's not self-induced guilt or shame. It's a Holy Spirit-driven awakening that draws you toward God, not away from Him.

What Repentance Looks Like in Real Life

Okay, so repentance sounds good in theory. But what does it actually look like when you live it out?

It's not just a one-time prayer. Repentance is an initial turning point and an ongoing lifestyle. Yes, there's a moment when you first turn from sin to God, that's your salvation moment. But repentance continues as you walk with Jesus. Every time you recognize sin in your life, confess it, and turn back toward God, you're practicing repentance.

It produces visible change. John the Baptist challenged people to "produce fruit in keeping with repentance" (Matthew 3:8). In other words, genuine repentance shows up in your attitudes, your decisions, your relationships, and your habits. You don't change to earn salvation, you change because you've been saved.

It's motivated by love, not fear. Some people think repentance is about scaring people into heaven. That's not the biblical picture. God's kindness leads you to repentance (Romans 2:4). When you realize how much He loves you, how much He's done for you, and how patient He's been with you, it melts your heart and makes you want to live differently.

Repentance and Transformation in the 901

Here in Memphis, we've seen countless lives transformed through the power of repentance. We've watched people walk away from addiction, restore broken marriages, find freedom from shame, and discover purpose they never knew was possible.

That's what happens when you truly repent and surrender your life to Jesus. The old patterns don't have to define you anymore. The past doesn't have to control your future. You become a new creation (2 Corinthians 5:17).

And the best part? You don't have to walk this journey alone. At First Assembly Memphis (8650 Walnut Grove Road, Cordova), we're a family committed to helping each other grow, stumble, learn, and keep moving forward together. And if you're not in the Memphis area, Boundless Online Church offers that same community and support digitally, wherever you are in the world.

Common Misconceptions About Repentance

Let's bust a few myths:

Myth #1: Repentance means you'll never sin again. Not true. Repentance means you've changed your direction and your allegiance, but you're still human. You'll still mess up. The difference is, now you have a Savior to run to when you fall, not a judge to hide from.

Myth #2: Repentance is just feeling really bad about your sin. Feeling sorry is part of it, but repentance goes further. Judas felt remorse after betraying Jesus, but he didn't repent, he didn't turn to God for forgiveness. Peter denied Jesus three times, felt deep sorrow, and returned to Jesus in repentance and restoration. Big difference.

Myth #3: You have to clean yourself up before you can repent. Nope. Repentance is the cleaning up. You come to God just as you are, broken and messy, and He does the transforming work. You don't fix yourself and then come to Jesus. You come to Jesus, and He fixes you.

How Do I Repent?

If you're ready to repent and turn your life over to Jesus, here's what that looks like:

Repentance isn't complicated. It's simply saying, "God, I need You. I can't do this on my own. I'm turning from my old life and turning toward You."
