What is the Gospel? (The Good News of Jesus Christ)

The Gospel is the breathtaking announcement that God has provided a way for us to be restored to Him through Jesus Christ. It is the "Good News" that through Jesus’ life, death, and resurrection, our sins are forgiven and eternal life is made available as a free gift. It isn't a list of rules, but a person to know and a life-changing relationship to begin.
What the Bible Says
Before we dive into the details, let's look at the foundation. The word of God is where we find the heartbeat of this message:
John 3:16 (NIV) "For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life."
1 Corinthians 15:3-4 (NIV) "For what I received I passed on to you as of first importance: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures."
Romans 1:16 (NIV) "For I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God that brings salvation to everyone who believes..."

Breaking Down the "Good News"
If you’ve spent any time around church circles, you’ve heard the word "Gospel" tossed around quite a bit. But what does it actually mean?
The word itself comes from the Greek term euangelion. In the ancient world, an euangelion was a joyful announcement: like a messenger arriving from a battlefield to tell the city that the war was won, or a herald announcing the birth of a new king. It was news that changed everything for the people hearing it.
In a Christian context, the Gospel is the ultimate announcement of victory. It isn’t a set of advice on how to live a better life; it is news about what has already been done for you by Jesus Christ.
The Problem: Why We Need Good News
To understand why the news is "good," we have to understand the situation we were in. According to the 16 Fundamental Truths of the Assemblies of God, specifically the truth regarding the "Fall of Man," we recognize that humanity was created good, but we chose to go our own way.
That choice: sin: created a gap between us and a holy God. We’ve all felt it: that sense that something is broken in the world and in ourselves. No matter how hard we try to be "good people," we can’t bridge that gap on our own.
The Solution: Jesus Christ
This is where the Gospel enters the room. God didn't leave us in our brokenness. He stepped into our world in the person of Jesus.
Jesus lived the perfect life we couldn't live. Then, He took the penalty for our sins upon Himself on the cross. He died, was buried, and then: in the greatest plot twist in history: He rose from the grave three days later.
His resurrection proved that sin and death had been defeated. Because He lives, we can have life too.

The Two Sides of the Gospel
Theologians often talk about the Gospel in two ways, and both are beautiful:
The Gospel of the Kingdom: This is the big-picture view. It’s the news that God is making all things new. He is restoring creation, bringing justice, and inviting us to live under His loving rule. It’s the promise that one day, there will be no more pain, tears, or death.
The Gospel of the Cross: This is the personal view. It focuses on how you and I can be right with God. It’s the message that through faith in Jesus’ sacrifice, our "tab" is paid. We are forgiven, adopted into God's family, and given a fresh start.
At Boundless Online Church, we believe these two go hand-in-hand. When you meet Jesus, your personal world changes, and you become part of the bigger story of God changing the whole world.
Is the Gospel for Everyone?
One of the most common questions we get is, "Does this apply to me?"
Maybe you’re working the graveyard shift and feel disconnected from "traditional" church. Maybe you’re a caregiver who can’t leave the house, or you’re someone who has felt judged by religious people in the past.
The beauty of the Gospel is its radical inclusivity. It isn't for people who have their lives together; it’s for people who know they need a Savior. It doesn’t matter where you are, what you’ve done, or how much you think you’ve messed up. The invitation is for "whoever believes."

How Do You Respond?
So, what do you do with this news? If someone tells you that you’ve won the lottery, the news only changes your life if you actually go and claim the prize.
The Bible says we respond to the Gospel through repentance and faith.
Repentance is a fancy word for a simple concept: turning around. It means acknowledging that our way isn’t working and deciding to follow God’s way instead.
Faith isn't just "believing facts" about Jesus. It’s trusting Him. It’s like sitting in a chair: you don’t just believe the chair exists; you put your full weight on it.
Salvation is a free gift. You can't earn it by being "extra holy" or doing enough chores for God. You simply receive it by trusting in what Jesus has already done.

Growing in Your Faith
Accepting the Gospel is the beginning of a journey, not the finish line. Once you’ve met Jesus, the next step is to grow in that relationship.
We know that life is busy. That’s why we offer resources like our Clarion Call Bible Study. Whether you’re a late-shift worker or a stay-at-home parent, you can dive into the Word and discover more about who God is and who He created you to be.

A Word of Encouragement
If you’re reading this and feeling a tug on your heart, that’s not an accident. God is pursuing you. He loves you more than you can imagine, and He has been waiting for this moment to welcome you home.
The Gospel isn't just "Good News" for 2,000 years ago. It is Good News for right now. It means your past is forgiven, your present has a purpose, and your future is secure in Him. We help people meet Jesus and grow in faith online, and we would be honored to be a part of your journey.

A Short Prayer
Lord Jesus, thank You for the Good News. I admit that I’ve tried to live life my own way and I’ve fallen short. I believe that You died for my sins and rose again to give me life. Today, I turn to You. I place my trust in You as my Savior and Lord. Thank You for Your grace, Your love, and for making me a part of Your family. Amen.
