The Holy Spirit is the third person of the Trinity, fully God, personal, and active. In the Assemblies of God tradition, He is the Comforter and Empowerer who provides believers with spiritual strength, guidance, and the power to live a holy life and share Jesus with others.
Have you ever felt like you were trying to live out your faith on "empty"? Maybe you’re navigating life in the 901, balancing work in Cordova, family time in Bartlett, or school in Arlington, and you just feel like there’s a missing piece to the spiritual puzzle. You want to follow Jesus, but doing it in your own strength feels like trying to drive across the Hernando de Soto Bridge without an engine.
That’s where the Holy Spirit comes in. At First Assembly Memphis, we believe the Holy Spirit isn't just a theological concept or a mysterious "force." He is a Person. He is God with us, right here and right now. Whether you are a new believer or just curious about what makes Pentecostal churches like ours a little different, this "AG 101" guide is designed to help you understand the most powerful helper you’ll ever have.
Definition Block: Who is the Holy Spirit?
The Holy Spirit: The third person of the Trinity (Father, Son, and Holy Spirit). He is fully God, co-eternal, and co-equal with the Father and the Son. He is the active presence of God on earth today, sent by Jesus to dwell within believers.
Baptism in the Holy Spirit: An experience distinct from and following the new birth (salvation), where a believer is filled with the Holy Spirit for the purpose of receiving power for Christian witness and service.
Why Does the Holy Spirit Matter in Memphis Today?
According to recent spiritual research, over 75% of adults are open to spiritual conversations, and many are looking for something "more" than just traditional religion. People are searching for a direct connection with the divine, a sense of peace that actually works when life gets messy.
In the Assemblies of God (AG) tradition, we lean heavily into what the Bible says about the Spirit. We don't just want to talk about God; we want to experience Him. The Holy Spirit is how that happens. He is the one who convicts us of sin, leads us to Jesus, and then sticks around to help us grow.

The AG 101: Core Truths About the Spirit
To understand the Holy Spirit, we have to look at the 16 Fundamental Truths of the Assemblies of God. These aren't just rules; they are the "guardrails" for our faith.
1. The Promise of the Father
Jesus told His disciples to wait in Jerusalem until they were "clothed with power from on high." He called the Spirit the "Promise of the Father." This means the Holy Spirit isn't an afterthought. He is God’s gift to you.
2. The Baptism in the Holy Spirit
This is a big one for us at FA Memphis. We believe that after someone is saved, there is a second experience available called the "Baptism in the Holy Spirit."
The Purpose: It’s not just for "feeling good." It’s for power.
The Evidence: We believe the initial physical sign of this baptism is speaking in other tongues, as the Spirit gives utterance (Acts 2:4).
3. Sanctification (The "Growth" Process)
Sanctification is a fancy word for "becoming more like Jesus." You can't do this by just trying harder. You need the Spirit to change your heart from the inside out. He helps you love people who are hard to love and find peace when your world is falling apart.
The Role of the Spirit | Scripture Reference | What it means for you |
The Comforter | John 14:26 | He brings peace to your mind during grief or anxiety. |
The Teacher | John 16:13 | He helps you understand the Bible when you read it. |
The Intercessor | Romans 8:26 | He prays for you when you don't have the words. |
The Empowerer | Acts 1:8 | He gives you the courage to share your faith. |
How to Experience the Holy Spirit in Your Daily Life
You don't have to be in a church building in Memphis to connect with the Holy Spirit. He is with you at the grocery store in Germantown, in your office in Collierville, and in your home in Millington. Here is how you can start "mastering" your walk with Him:
Ask for Help: The Spirit is a gentleman. He responds to invitation. Start your morning by saying, "Holy Spirit, help me today."
Listen for the Promptings: Have you ever had a sudden thought to check on a friend or be extra kind to a stranger? That’s often the Spirit’s "still, small voice."
Read the Word: The Holy Spirit wrote the Bible through human authors. When you read it, He "illuminates" it, making the words jump off the page and apply to your life.
Practice Silence: It’s hard to hear a whisper in a loud room. Give yourself five minutes of digital-free silence today to just "be" with God.
Join a Community: We grow faster together. Whether it’s a Life Group at FA Memphis or a digital small group through Boundless Online Church, connection is key.

Common Misconceptions About the Holy Spirit
"He’s only for 'super-Christians'." False. The Spirit is for every believer. From the stay-at-home parent to the CEO, everyone needs His strength.
"It’s all about emotions." While the Spirit can certainly move our emotions, His work is rooted in truth. You can be filled with the Spirit even when you don't "feel" a goosebump.
"I have to be perfect first." Actually, it’s the opposite. We need the Spirit because we aren't perfect. He is the one who helps us get it right.
