What Is Baptism in the Holy Spirit? AG 101: A Beginner’s Guide to Pentecostal Faith in Memphis

Baptism in the Holy Spirit
What Is Baptism in the Holy Spirit?

Baptism in the Holy Spirit is a distinct experience following salvation that empowers believers for Christian living and witnessing. In Assemblies of God doctrine, the initial physical evidence of this baptism is speaking in tongues (Acts 2:4), providing spiritual power to serve God effectively in our community.

Exploring the Heart of Pentecostal Faith

If you have spent any time in the 901 area, whether you are grabbing coffee in Cordova, walking the trails in Bartlett, or enjoying the quiet of Arlington, you may have heard the term "Pentecostal" or "Spirit-filled." For many, these terms feel exciting but perhaps a bit mysterious. You might wonder: "Is there more to my walk with God?" or "How can I find the strength to lead my family well in today’s world?"

At First Assembly Memphis, we believe that the same power that fell on the believers in the Book of Acts is available to you today. This isn't just a historical event; it is a live, active promise for every person who follows Jesus. This "AG 101" guide is designed to help you understand what the Baptism in the Holy Spirit is and why it matters for your life here in Memphis.

The Biblical Foundation: What Does the Bible Say?

The concept of being baptized in the Holy Spirit isn't a modern invention. It is rooted deeply in the New Testament. Before Jesus ascended to heaven, He gave His followers a specific command: "Do not leave Jerusalem, but wait for the gift my Father promised" (Acts 1:4). He told them that while John baptized with water, they would soon be "baptized with the Holy Spirit" (Acts 1:5).

This promise was fulfilled on the Day of Pentecost. The Bible describes a sound like a rushing wind and tongues of fire resting on the believers. They were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them. This moment changed the course of history, transforming a group of frightened disciples into bold witnesses who shared the Gospel across the known world.

Definition: Spirit Baptism

Baptism in the Holy Spirit: A spiritual experience, subsequent to salvation, in which the believer is "immersed" in the presence and power of the Holy Spirit. It is characterized by an outpouring of spiritual gifts and a newfound boldness for Christian service.

Strengthening Families in Memphis

Is This Different from Becoming a Christian?

One of the most common questions we hear at FA Memphis is whether Spirit baptism is the same thing as being "born again." According to the Assemblies of God Statement of Fundamental Truths, these are two distinct experiences.

When you accept Jesus as your Savior, the Holy Spirit performs a work of regeneration within you. You are made new, and the Spirit comes to dwell in you. However, the Baptism in the Holy Spirit is an additional "overflow." Think of it this way: Salvation is like having a well of water inside you for your own life, but Spirit baptism is like that well becoming a spring that overflows to touch everyone around you.

Why Do We Need This Power Today?

Life in the 901 can be demanding. Whether you are navigating the stresses of a career in Bartlett or trying to build a strong, God-centered home in Arlington, we all reach points where our own strength isn't enough. The Baptism in the Holy Spirit is not about "feeling good" or having a mountain-top emotional experience, though it can certainly be emotional. Its primary purpose is power.

In Acts 1:8, Jesus says, "But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses." This power helps us:

  1. Share our faith: It gives us the courage to talk about Jesus with friends and neighbors.

  2. Deepen our prayer life: It allows for a level of communication with God that goes beyond human language.

  3. Strengthen our families: It provides the spiritual fruit and endurance needed to love and lead our spouses and children.

  4. Operate in spiritual gifts: It opens the door to gifts like healing, prophecy, and wisdom that serve the church.

AG 101: Walking in the Spirit

Understanding the Initial Physical Evidence

A distinct characteristic of the Assemblies of God is the belief in "Initial Physical Evidence." We believe that when someone is baptized in the Holy Spirit, the first outward sign is speaking in "other tongues" (glossolalia).

Definition: Initial Physical Evidence

Initial Physical Evidence: The first observable sign that a spiritual event has occurred. In Pentecostal theology, this refers to the act of speaking in a language unknown to the speaker, enabled by the Holy Spirit, as recorded in Acts 2, 10, and 19.

Why tongues? It is a sign of complete surrender. The tongue is often the hardest part of the human body to control (James 3:8). When we allow the Spirit to pray through us in a language we haven't learned, we are yielding our most personal faculty, our speech, to God’s control. It is a beautiful, intimate moment of connection between the believer and the Creator.

How to Receive the Baptism in the Holy Spirit

If you are a follower of Jesus and you desire this experience, the good news is that it is a gift! You don't have to earn it, and you don't have to be "perfect" to receive it. Here is how you can seek this gift:

  1. Ask: Jesus said the Father gives the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him (Luke 11:13). Simply pray and tell God you want everything He has for you.

  2. Believe: Trust that God is faithful to His Word. If He promised it, He will do it.

  3. Yield: This is the most important part. To be "baptized" or "immersed," you must let go. In prayer, focus on praising God. As the Spirit begins to move, cooperate with Him.

  4. Wait: Sometimes it happens instantly; sometimes it happens in a quiet moment of waiting. At our Wednesday night services or Sunday gatherings, we often have times of prayer where we seek the Spirit together.
