What Is Holy Spirit Baptism? A Beginner’s Guide to the Pentecostal Experience

Holy Spirit baptism is a distinct spiritual experience following salvation where believers are empowered for witness and service. In the Assemblies of God tradition, it is evidenced by speaking in other tongues as the Spirit gives utterance, providing deeper intimacy with God and spiritual strength for daily life.

Have you ever felt like your spiritual life needed a "power surge"? Maybe you love Jesus and attend church regularly, but you feel like there’s a gap between the vibrant, miracle-filled lives of the early disciples in the Book of Acts and your own Monday-morning reality. If you’ve ever wondered if there is "more" to the Christian walk, you aren’t alone.

In Memphis and all across the globe, millions of people are discovering that the Holy Spirit isn’t just a theological concept, He is a person who wants to fill you with power. At First Assembly Memphis, we believe this experience, known as the Baptism in the Holy Spirit, is for every believer.

Why Does This Experience Matter Today?

The Pentecostal movement is the fastest-growing religious movement in the world. Recent data from 2024 and 2025 shows that nearly 700 million people, about one out of every three Christians, identify as Pentecostal or Charismatic. This isn’t a small, "corner" experience; it is a global awakening.

In the Assemblies of God, we view Holy Spirit baptism as one of our four cardinal doctrines. It isn't just about a one-time event; it’s about a lifelong partnership with God that changes how you pray, how you serve, and how you see the world.

Defining the Terms: What Are We Talking About?

Before we go deeper, let’s clear up some common terms you might hear in a Pentecostal church like FA Memphis.

Definition: Salvation The moment you place your faith in Jesus Christ, are forgiven of your sins, and receive the Holy Spirit as a "seal" of your adoption into God's family.
Definition: Baptism in the Holy Spirit A separate, subsequent experience from salvation where Jesus (the Baptizer) immerses the believer in the Holy Spirit for the purpose of empowerment.
Definition: Speaking in Tongues A supernatural language given by the Holy Spirit. In the AG tradition, it is the initial physical evidence that someone has received the baptism, used for personal prayer and sometimes in public worship when accompanied by an interpretation.

The "More" Factor: What the Baptism Does for You

One of our pastors often describes Holy Spirit baptism as the "more" factor. You have the Spirit when you are saved, but the baptism is like the difference between a glass of water and being jumped into a swimming pool. It’s an immersion.

  1. More Boldness: Just like Peter went from denying Jesus to preaching to thousands in Acts 2, the Spirit gives you the courage to share your faith in your Memphis neighborhood or workplace.

  2. More Intimacy in Prayer: Have you ever sat down to pray and run out of words? Tongues allow your spirit to communicate directly with God when your mind doesn't know what to say (Romans 8:26).

  3. More Sensitivity to God: You begin to notice the "nudges" of the Spirit more clearly, knowing when to call a friend, when to pray for someone, or how to navigate a difficult family situation.

  4. More Power for Living: Life in the 901 can be tough. The Holy Spirit provides the "power surge" needed to overcome habits, handle stress, and live with joy even when circumstances are hard.

Is This Experience Biblical?

Yes! If you look at the Book of Acts, you see a consistent pattern. In Samaria (Acts 8), people were saved and baptized in water, but the apostles still felt it was necessary to come and pray that they would receive the Holy Spirit. In Ephesus (Acts 19), Paul’s first question to a group of believers was: "Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?"

It was a standard part of the early church experience. It wasn't reserved for "super-Christians" or leaders, it was for everyone.

How Can I Receive the Baptism in the Holy Spirit?

Receiving this gift isn't about working hard or being "perfect." It's about receiving a gift from a Father who loves you. Here are five simple steps if you are seeking this experience:

  1. Check Your Heart: Ensure you have a relationship with Jesus. This experience is for those who have already made Him Lord of their lives.

  2. Ask in Faith: Jesus said, "If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him!" (Luke 11:13). Just ask!

  3. Surrender Your Will: This is an act of trust. Let go of any fear or "control" over how the experience should look.

  4. Wait and Worship: Spend time in God's presence. Many receive while in worship, during a church service, or even in their own living room while watching Boundless Online Church.

  5. Yield Your Tongue: When you feel the Spirit moving, you may feel an impression of words or sounds that aren't English. Step out in faith and speak those sounds. The Spirit gives the "utterance," but you do the speaking.
