What is the rapture, and is it like the movies?

{HERO} What is the rapture, and is it like the movies?

Audience: Tier 2 – Seekers

The rapture is when Jesus returns to "catch up" all believers, living and dead, to meet Him in the air (1 Thessalonians 4:16-17). It's not about Hollywood chaos, burning cars, or plane crashes. It's God's rescue plan before judgment, offering believers resurrected bodies and eternal hope. It's sudden, supernatural, and centered on Christ, not special effects.

Why This Matters for FA Memphis and Boundless Online Church

At First Assembly Memphis and Boundless Online Church, we believe in the rapture as a core Assemblies of God doctrine. But we also know many people's only exposure to it comes from movies, and those portrayals can create confusion, fear, or skepticism. Our mission is to cut through the Hollywood noise and help you understand what Scripture actually teaches, so you can live with hope, not hype.

So... Is It Like the Movies?

Let's be honest: most of what you've seen about the rapture in pop culture is dramatic fiction, not biblical truth. Left Behind gave us pilotless planes, driverless cars, and mass panic. Other films added burning cities, global meltdowns, and apocalyptic horror.

Here's what's actually true: The rapture will be sudden, supernatural, and unmistakable, but Scripture doesn't describe flaming chaos or Hollywood-style disasters. It describes a rescue mission.

Diverse believers looking upward with hope as they await the rapture of the church

The Bible says believers will be "caught up" (harpazo in Greek, rapio in Latin) to meet Jesus in the air. The emphasis isn't on what's left behind, it's on who we're meeting.

What Does the Bible Actually Say?

Let's anchor this in Scripture, not cinema.

1 Thessalonians 4:16-17 gives us the clearest picture:

"For the Lord himself will come down from heaven, with a loud command, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet call of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first. After that, we who are still alive and are left will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And so we will be with the Lord forever."

Notice what's included:

  • Jesus Himself returns (not secretly, but with a shout and trumpet)

  • The dead in Christ rise first (resurrection of believers who've already died)

  • Living believers are caught up next (transformed instantly)

  • We meet the Lord in the air (not on earth yet, that's the Second Coming)

  • We're with Him forever (eternal security and relationship)

1 Corinthians 15:51-52 adds the detail:

"We will not all sleep, but we will all be changed, in a flash, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, the dead will be raised imperishable, and we will be changed."

This isn't a slow-motion evacuation. It's instantaneous transformation, our mortal bodies becoming immortal, our perishable becoming imperishable.

The Rapture vs. The Second Coming

Here's where it gets important: the rapture and the Second Coming are two different events.

The Rapture

The Second Coming

Jesus comes for His church

Jesus comes with His church

We meet Him in the air

He stands on the Mount of Olives (Zechariah 14:4)

Happens before the Tribulation (Assemblies of God belief)

Happens after the Tribulation

Focus: rescue and transformation

Focus: judgment and kingdom

Hollywood often blurs these together. But Assemblies of God theology, rooted in Scripture, sees them as distinct. The rapture is comfort; the Second Coming is conquest. Both are real. Both are coming. But they serve different purposes in God's redemptive plan.

What Hollywood Gets Wrong

Let's debunk a few myths:

Myth #1: The rapture causes global disasters. Scripture doesn't say planes will crash or cities will burn because of the rapture. Yes, there will be shock and confusion when millions vanish, but the disasters described in Revelation come during the Tribulation, not because of the rapture itself.

Myth #2: It's a secret event. 1 Thessalonians 4:16 says Jesus descends "with a loud command, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet call of God." That's not stealthy. Every believer will know. Unbelievers will suddenly realize something massive just happened.

Myth #3: It's about fear and punishment. Actually, the opposite. Paul writes in 1 Thessalonians 4:18: "Therefore encourage one another with these words." The rapture is meant to bring comfort and hope, not terror. It's God saying, "I'm coming to get you before the worst hits."

Myth #4: Only "super Christians" will be raptured. The rapture isn't a reward for perfect behavior, it's for all who are in Christ. If you've placed your faith in Jesus, confessed Him as Lord, and been born again, you're part of the Bride of Christ. The rapture is for the church, imperfect, growing, but redeemed.

Why Does This Matter in Memphis (or Wherever You Are)?

You might be thinking, "Okay, but why should I care about end-times theology when I've got bills, job stress, and real-world problems?"

Fair question. Here's why it matters:

1. It changes how you live today. If you believe Jesus could return at any moment, you live with urgency and purpose. You prioritize relationships. You share the gospel. You forgive faster. You invest in eternity, not just the temporary.

2. It offers hope in chaos. Memphis, like every city, has its struggles. Violence, division, economic pressure. The rapture reminds us this world is not our final home. We're not stuck here. God has a rescue plan, and it's already in motion.

3. It clarifies your mission. If the rapture is coming, that means people need to know Jesus now. Not "someday." Not "when they're ready." Now. That's why FA Memphis and Boundless Online Church exist, to help people find Christ before it's too late.

How Should You Respond?

Here's the practical takeaway:

If you're not a believer yet: The rapture isn't meant to scare you, it's meant to wake you up. God loves you. Jesus died for you. And He's offering you a spot on the rescue flight. All you have to do is say yes. Confess Jesus as Lord, believe God raised Him from the dead, and you're in (Romans 10:9).

If you're a believer: Live like you believe this. Don't get distracted by Hollywood's version or end-times conspiracy theories. Stay rooted in Scripture. Stay Spirit-filled. Stay mission-focused. And encourage others with this hope.

The rapture isn't about escaping responsibility, it's about fulfilling it until Jesus comes.

One Last Thought: The Comfort Factor

Paul ends his teaching on the rapture with this: "Therefore encourage one another with these words" (1 Thessalonians 4:18).

The rapture is meant to be encouraging. Not fearful. Not sensational. Encouraging.

If you've lost a loved one who knew Jesus, the rapture means you'll see them again, resurrected, whole, glorified. If you're struggling with chronic illness, depression, or pain, the rapture means you'll get a new body, no more suffering, no more tears. If you're overwhelmed by the brokenness of this world, the rapture means Jesus is coming to make all things new.

That's not Hollywood. That's hope.
