What is the Trinity? (Understanding the Nature of God)

The Trinity is the Christian belief that there is only one God, who exists eternally in three distinct persons: the Father, the Son (Jesus Christ), and the Holy Spirit. While the word "Trinity" isn't found in the Bible, the concept is woven throughout Scripture. It describes a God who is perfectly united in essence but three in person: a beautiful mystery of infinite love and divine community.
Bible Verses on the Trinity
"Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit." : Matthew 28:19
"The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ and the love of God and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all." : 2 Corinthians 13:14
"And when Jesus was baptized, immediately he went up from the water, and behold, the heavens were opened to him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and coming to rest on him; and behold, a voice from heaven said, 'This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased.'" : Matthew 3:16–17
"But when the Helper comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth, who proceeds from the Father, he will bear witness about me." : John 15:26
Understanding the Nature of God
When we talk about the Trinity, we are stepping into one of the deepest truths of our faith. For many of us, the idea of "three-in-one" can feel a bit like a math problem that doesn't quite add up. But the Trinity isn't a puzzle to be solved; it’s a relationship to be experienced.
At Boundless Online Church, we believe that God is the One True God who has revealed Himself as the eternally self-existent “I AM.” This aligns perfectly with the 16 Fundamental Truths of the Assemblies of God, specifically Truth #2, which details the Adorable Godhead.
To understand the Trinity, we have to look at two things: Essence and Person.
One in Essence (What God Is)
There is only one God. This is the foundation of our faith. We aren't polytheists who believe in three different gods. There is one divine "being" or "essence." All three persons: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit: share this same divine nature. They are co-equal in power, majesty, and eternity. None is "more" God than the others.
Three in Person (Who God Is)
While there is only one "What" (God), there are three "Whos." The Father is not the Son, the Son is not the Spirit, and the Spirit is not the Father. They are distinct in their relationship to one another and in their roles in our lives, yet they are never divided.

The Role of the Father
The Father is often seen as the source and the sender. He is the Creator of all things. In the grand story of the Bible, the Father loved the world so much that He sent His only Son to rescue us. He is our Abba, a term of endearment that means "Daddy" or "Father," showing us that the Sovereign Lord of the universe wants a personal, familial connection with us.
The Role of the Son
Jesus Christ is the Son. He is the Word made flesh. He is fully God and fully man. He didn't just "show up" 2,000 years ago; He has existed eternally with the Father. Jesus is the one who took on human skin, lived a perfect life, died for our sins, and rose again. When we look at Jesus, we see exactly what God is like.
The Role of the Holy Spirit
The Holy Spirit is our Comforter, Advocate, and Helper. He is not a "vague force" or an "energy." He is a Person. He lives within believers, empowering us to live holy lives and giving us the strength to share the Gospel. He is the one who convicts us of sin and leads us into all truth.

Why Does the Trinity Matter to You?
You might be wondering, "That's great theology, Penny, but how does it help me on a Tuesday morning?"
It matters because it means that God is love in His very nature. Long before the world was created, love was happening between the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. God didn't create us because He was lonely; He created us to invite us into the love that already existed within Himself.
If you are a shift worker feeling isolated at 3:00 AM, or a caregiver feeling exhausted and alone, know this: The God of the universe is a God of community. You are never truly alone because the Holy Spirit is with you, the Son is interceding for you, and the Father is watching over you.
The Trinity also shows us the perfect model for our own relationships. Just as the Father, Son, and Spirit live in perfect harmony and mutual honor, we are called to live in unity with one another. Whether you are part of our Clarion Call Bible Study or chatting in our I'm New Q&A Welcome Center, we strive to reflect that same divine community.
A Mystery to Embrace
We have to be honest: our human minds can’t fully wrap around the infinite nature of God. And that’s okay! If we could explain God perfectly, He wouldn't be God.
The Trinity invites us to worship. It reminds us that God is bigger than our logic. He is a God of mystery, majesty, and most importantly, a God of presence. He is "God for us" (the Father), "God with us" (the Son), and "God in us" (the Holy Spirit).
If you’ve been struggling to understand who God is, don’t feel pressured to have all the answers. Just start by talking to Him. He is listening.

Encouragement for Your Journey
If you are a seeker just starting to explore faith, or a long-time believer looking to go deeper, remember that growth is a process. The nature of God is a vast ocean: we are just beginning to wade in the shallows.
Take heart in the fact that God has revealed Himself to us because He wants to be known. He isn't hiding. Through His Word, His Son, and His Spirit, He is constantly reaching out to you.

A Short Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank You for revealing Yourself to us. Thank You for Your incredible love as our Father, Your sacrifice as the Son, and Your presence as the Holy Spirit. Help me to understand Your nature more each day, but more importantly, help me to know You personally. Fill my heart with Your peace and guide me into all truth. Amen.
