Who Is Jesus?

Jesus Christ is the Son of God, fully divine and fully human, born of a virgin, who lived a sinless life, died on the cross to pay for the sins of humanity, and rose from the dead on the third day. He is the promised Messiah of the Old Testament, the only way to salvation, and the personal Savior who offers eternal life to everyone who believes in Him.

In this comprehensive guide, we explore the identity of Jesus through Scripture, historical evidence, and the personal impact He has on our lives today. We will look at who He claimed to be, what history says about Him, and how you can know Him personally.

The Word Became Flesh: Understanding His Divinity

The foundation of the Christian faith rests on one central figure: Jesus of Nazareth. To understand who He is, we must go back to the very beginning. The Apostle John opens his Gospel with a staggering declaration: "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God" (John 1:1). He follows this by stating, "The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us" (John 1:14). This concept, often called the Incarnation, means that the Creator of the universe stepped into human history, taking on skin and bone to be near us.

Jesus was not just a wise man or a gifted storyteller. He was God in the flesh. This duality, being fully God and fully man, is what allowed Him to bridge the gap between a holy God and a broken humanity. As a man, He felt hunger, thirst, pain, and grief. As God, He demonstrated power over nature, disease, and even death itself. If you have ever wondered can I know God personally?, the answer is found in the person of Jesus.

Your Savior and Your Friend

The Way, the Truth, and the Life

One of the most famous claims Jesus ever made was in response to a question from His disciple, Thomas. In John 14:6, Jesus said, "I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me." This is an exclusive claim. Jesus didn't say He was one of many ways to God; He claimed to be the only way. For a world that values many paths, this can feel challenging. However, Jesus made this claim because He is the only one who lived the sinless life required to pay the debt of our sins.

By claiming to be "the Truth," Jesus positioned Himself as the ultimate reality. In a noisy digital world full of conflicting opinions and "fake news," Jesus remains the steady anchor. He is the "Life" because He conquered the grave, offering us a life that transcends our physical circumstances and extends into eternity. This is the foundation of finding what is the meaning of life, it is found in a relationship with the Giver of life.

Historical Evidence: Did Jesus Really Exist?

While the Bible is our primary source of information about Jesus, many people ask if there is evidence for Him outside of Scripture. The answer is a resounding yes. Jesus is one of the most well-documented figures of antiquity. Ancient historians who were not Christians recorded His existence and the impact of His followers. For more on this, you can read about is the Bible historically accurate?.

Historical Evidence of Jesus Christ

The Roman historian Tacitus, writing in the early second century, mentions "Christus," who "suffered the extreme penalty during the reign of Tiberius at the hands of one of our procurators, Pontius Pilatus." Likewise, the Jewish historian Flavius Josephus mentions Jesus in his work *Antiquities of the Jews*, describing Him as a wise man who performed "surprising feats" and was condemned to the cross. These secular sources confirm the basic historical facts of Jesus' life: He was a real person, He lived in Judea, He was executed by the Romans, and His followers believed He rose from the dead.

The Humble Servant and Exalted King

In Philippians 2:5-11, the Apostle Paul provides a beautiful "hymn" about the nature of Christ. He describes how Jesus, though being God, "emptied himself" and took the "very nature of a servant." He was obedient even to the point of death on a cross. This passage shows us the heart of Jesus. He didn't come to be served, but to serve. He stepped down from the throne of heaven into the dirt of our world so that He could lift us up.

Because of His humility and sacrifice, the passage concludes by saying that God has highly exalted Him and given Him the name that is above every name. One day, every knee will bow and every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord. He is the King of Kings, but He is also the friend of sinners. He is the one who sees you in your loneliness, loves you in your mess, and invites you into His family.

The Trilemma: Lord, Liar, or Lunatic?

The famous author C.S. Lewis famously argued that we cannot simply call Jesus a "great moral teacher." Because of the claims Jesus made, claiming to be God, claiming to forgive sins, and claiming to be the judge of the world, He left us only three logical options. If His claims were false and He knew they were false, He was a Liar. If His claims were false but He believed they were true, He was a Lunatic on the level of someone who thinks they are a poached egg. But if His claims were true, He is Lord.

There is no middle ground. A man who said the things Jesus said would not be a "great moral teacher" if He were lying or insane. He would be either a demon from hell or the God of heaven. When we look at the life He lived, the miracles He performed, and the radical way He changed the lives of His followers, the most logical conclusion is that He is exactly who He said He was: Lord.

A Relationship, Not a Religion

From Doubt to Devotion: The Story of Thomas

In John 20, we find the story of "Doubting Thomas." After Jesus rose from the dead, He appeared to the disciples, but Thomas wasn't there. Thomas refused to believe unless he could see the nail marks in Jesus' hands and put his hand into His side. A week later, Jesus appeared again and invited Thomas to do exactly that. Jesus didn't scold Thomas for his questions; He met him in his doubt.

Thomas's response is one of the most powerful confessions in the Bible: "My Lord and my God!" (John 20:28). Jesus then said, "Because you have seen me, you have believed; blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed." This blessing is for you. You may not be able to physically touch His hands today, but through the Holy Spirit and the Word of God, you can encounter the living Christ. He is not a figure trapped in a history book; He is alive and present right now.

A Prayer to Know Jesus

If you are searching for hope, clarity, or a fresh start, Jesus is waiting for you. You can talk to Him right now with a simple prayer like this:

"Lord Jesus, I want to know who You really are. I admit that I have lived my own way and have sinned against You. Thank You for dying on the cross for me and rising again to give me life. I ask You to be my Savior and my Lord. Thank You for loving me, seeing me, and never leaving me. Help me to follow You every day. Amen."

Frequently Asked Questions About Jesus

Did Jesus really exist historically?

Yes. Beyond the Bible, multiple non-Christian historians like Tacitus and Josephus record Jesus as a real historical figure who lived, performed "surprising feats," and was executed under Pontius Pilate. There is more historical evidence for Jesus than for many other ancient figures whose existence is never questioned.

How is Jesus different from other religious leaders?

Most religious leaders pointed to a path or a set of rules. Jesus claimed to BE the path. Furthermore, Jesus is the only religious leader who claimed to be God in the flesh and then proved it by rising from the dead. His tomb is empty; others are not.

Can someone really have a relationship with Jesus?

Absolutely. Christianity is not a list of rules but a relationship with a living Person. Through prayer, reading the Bible, and the work of the Holy Spirit, believers experience Jesus' presence, guidance, and comfort in their daily lives.

What does it mean that Jesus is my Savior?

It means that Jesus did for you what you could not do for yourself. We are all separated from God by our sin, but Jesus took the punishment for our sin on the cross. When you trust Him, His sacrifice covers your debt, and you are saved from judgment and given eternal life.

Does Jesus care about my specific problems?

Yes. The Bible says that Jesus is our "High Priest" who can empathize with our weaknesses (Hebrews 4:15). He felt human pain and temptation. He cares about your anxiety, your grief, your finances, and your family. You are never alone in your struggles.

What if I've done things too terrible for Jesus to forgive?

There is no sin greater than the grace of God. Jesus' death on the cross was sufficient for every sin ever committed. If you come to Him with a repentant heart, He promises to forgive you and wash you clean. His love is deeper than your darkest secret.

Was Jesus just a prophet?

While many religions respect Jesus as a prophet, Jesus claimed to be much more. He claimed to be one with God the Father (John 10:30). A prophet speaks for God; Jesus spoke AS God. Accepting Him only as a prophet ignores His own words and the evidence of His resurrection.

Is Jesus still relevant in 2026?

Human needs haven't changed. We still deal with loneliness, fear of death, guilt, and a search for purpose. Jesus offers the same peace and hope today that He offered 2,000 years ago. He is the "same yesterday and today and forever" (Hebrews 13:8).

How do I start following Jesus today?
