Why Do Bad Things Happen to Good People? Facing the Problem of Evil

This is one of life’s toughest questions, but the Bible teaches that suffering entered our world through sin, not because God lacks power or love. While we live in a broken world, God uses even the darkest moments to bring about a greater purpose and eventually wipe away every tear. He is not distant in our pain; He is a present help in times of trouble.

Bible Verses to Lean On

Romans 8:28 "And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose."

Genesis 50:20 "You intended to harm me, but God intended it for good to accomplish what is now being done, the saving of many lives."

John 16:33 "I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world."

Psalm 34:18 "The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit."

2 Corinthians 1:3-4 "Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves receive from God."

Understanding the Brokenness

When we look at the news or experience personal tragedy, our hearts naturally cry out, "Why?" It’s a question that has been asked by philosophers, theologians, and everyday people for thousands of years. We call this the "problem of evil."

If God is all-powerful and all-loving, why doesn't He just stop the bad stuff?

To understand this, we have to go back to the beginning. In our 16 Fundamental Truths, we recognize that man was created good and upright, but by voluntary transgression, fell into sin. When sin entered the world, it didn't just affect our souls; it broke the very fabric of creation.

We now live in a world that is "out of tune." Sickness, natural disasters, and human cruelty are not part of God’s original design. They are the symptoms of a world separated from its Creator.

The Gift and Burden of Free Will

One of the most significant reasons evil exists is because God gave us free will.

Think about it this way: for love to be real, it has to be a choice. If God forced us to love Him and forced us to always do the right thing, we wouldn't be humans; we would be programmed machines. Because God values genuine relationship, He allowed us the capacity to choose, and unfortunately, humans often choose poorly.

Much of the "bad" we see in the world is the direct or indirect result of human choices. Whether it’s corporate greed causing poverty or individual anger leading to violence, we see the ripple effects of free will gone wrong.

But here is the amazing thing: even when we use our freedom to cause pain, God is so powerful that He can take those broken pieces and weave them into a story of redemption. As we often discuss in our Sunday Sermons, God doesn't cause the evil, but He is the master of using it for a greater good.

The Question of "Good People"

When we ask why bad things happen to "good people," we are making a human judgment. From our perspective, there are many wonderful, kind, and selfless people who suffer terribly.

However, through a biblical lens, we realize that none of us are truly "good" on our own. We all fall short. But even more importantly, God doesn't distribute "goodies" based on our performance. If He did, none of us would stand a chance!

Suffering is not always a punishment for a specific sin. In the book of Job, a man who was described as "blameless and upright" lost everything. His friends tried to convince him he must have done something wrong, but they were mistaken. Sometimes, suffering is simply a part of the human experience in a fallen world.

God is Not Distant in Your Pain

If you are reading this while going through a storm, please know this: God is not watching from a distance, indifferent to your tears.

The ultimate answer to the problem of evil is the Cross. Jesus Christ, the only truly "good" person to ever live, suffered the most horrific "bad" thing imaginable. He was innocent, yet He took on the pain, the shame, and the death that we deserved.

By doing this, God showed us that He is willing to enter into our suffering. He doesn't just give us an explanation; He gives us His presence. When you hurt, He hurts with you. When you are lonely, He is right there in the room.

For those of you working the late shift, or those sitting in a hospital room, or those living in places where it’s unsafe to even own a Bible, God’s "calm power" is available to you right now. You don't have to have it all figured out to feel His peace.

Finding a Higher Purpose

It’s hard to see the "why" when you’re in the middle of the "what." But many times, the trials we face serve a purpose we can't see yet.

  1. Character Building: Just as gold is refined by fire, our faith is often strengthened through challenges.

  2. A Platform for Comfort: Once you have walked through a specific pain, you are uniquely qualified to help someone else walking that same path.

  3. A Shift in Perspective: Pain has a way of stripping away the things that don't matter and focusing our hearts on eternity.

A Hope That Lasts

At Boundless Online Church, we help people meet Jesus and grow in faith online. We know that for many of our global family, especially those who are disabled or acting as full-time caregivers, life can feel like an endless series of "bad things."

But our hope isn't found in a perfect life today. Our hope is found in the promise that this world is not the end. There is a day coming where there will be no more pain, no more cancer, no more war, and no more "why."

Until then, we walk by faith. We lean on each other. We post our heartaches on the Prayer Wall. And we trust that the God who overcame the world is holding us in His hands.

Encouragement for Your Journey

If you’re struggling to reconcile your faith with your current circumstances, give yourself permission to grieve and to ask questions. God isn't intimidated by your doubts. He wants you to bring them to Him.

Look for the small mercies in your day. Maybe it’s a kind word from a stranger, a moment of quiet, or a verse that sticks in your mind. These are "God-winks", reminders that He is still in control even when things feel chaotic.

You are part of a global community that is praying for you. Whether you are a shift worker in a busy city or someone seeking God in a quiet village, you are not alone.

A Short Prayer for Peace

Lord, we come to You with heavy hearts and big questions. We don't understand why life is so hard sometimes, and we don't understand why "bad" things seem to win. But today, we choose to trust Your character over our circumstances. We thank You that You are a God who comforts us, stays near to us, and promises us a future without pain. Please give us the strength to take the next step. Fill our hearts with Your peace that surpasses all understanding. Amen.
