Why does it matter that Jesus is more than just a good teacher for my kids?

When our children understand that Jesus is the Son of God, eternal, holy, and all-powerful, their faith moves from a list of rules to a relationship with the King of the Universe who loves them personally. This shift from seeing Jesus as a "good man with good advice" to the "God-man with all authority" is the foundation of a faith that doesn't just survive childhood but thrives through a lifetime.
Scripture: Matthew 16:16 "Simon Peter answered, 'You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.'"

Think about the last time your child came to you with a "big" fear. Maybe it was a thunderstorm, a bad dream, or a friendship that felt a bit shaky at school. In those moments, do they need a set of instructions? Do they need a lecture on the physics of lightning or a list of "five steps to feel better"? No. What they need, and what they reach for, is your hand. They need the presence of someone who is bigger than the problem and someone who has the power to keep them safe.
This is precisely why the Deity of Jesus, the truth that He is fully God, matters so much for our families. If Jesus is just a "good teacher," He’s basically a historical life-coach. He gives us great tips on how to be kind, how to share our toys, and how to pray. But a teacher, no matter how wise, eventually leaves the classroom. A teacher can give you the map, but they can't carry you through the wilderness. A teacher can explain the light, but they cannot be the Light that shines inside your soul.
In the Assemblies of God, we hold fast to the fundamental truth that Jesus is the Eternal Son of God. He wasn't just a man who became special; He was God who became man. This isn't just a dusty theological point for Sunday school, it’s the heartbeat of our security. When we tell our kids that Jesus loves them, we aren't just telling them about a nice person from 2,000 years ago. We are telling them that the Creator of the stars, the One who speaks and the winds obey, is the very same Person who knows the number of hairs on their head and hears their quietest whisper in the middle of the night.
When Jesus asked His disciples, "Who do you say I am?" Peter didn't reply with, "You’re the best teacher I’ve ever had." He said, "You are the Son of the living God." That recognition changed Peter’s life, and it’s the same recognition that transforms our children’s hearts. It moves them from "I have to do this because the Bible says so" to "I want to follow Him because He is my King and my God."

Consider the difference between information and transformation. Information is knowing that Jesus fed five thousand people. Transformation is knowing that the God who multiplied the bread is alive today and is big enough to handle your child’s anxiety. Information is knowing Jesus walked on water. Transformation is knowing that because He is God, He can walk through the "storms" of our modern life with us. If He is just a teacher, we study Him. If He is God, we worship Him, trust Him, and find our identity in Him.
For a child, this provides a profound sense of peace. In a world that often feels chaotic and unpredictable, knowing that their "Friend, Jesus" is also the "Lord of All" gives them an anchor. It means that when they fail, they are coming to a Savior who has the power to forgive, not just a teacher who might be disappointed. It means that when they feel alone, they are accompanied by the omnipresent God who promised never to leave them. Understanding the deity of Christ is what turns a "religion" into a living, breathing, life-giving relationship.
At Boundless Online Church, we want to help you nurture this deep, secure connection. Whether you are exploring what it means to belong to a community that stands on these truths or you are looking for a place to worship together on Sunday morning, our goal is to point your family toward the King. Because when our kids see Him as He truly is, the Son of the Living God, their world becomes a much brighter, safer, and more beautiful place.

Main Topic: Honoring the King
How do we make this high theological concept practical for a six-year-old or a ten-year-old? It starts with the way we talk about Jesus in our homes. If we only talk about Him when we want our kids to behave, we are treating Him like a principal. But if we talk about Him when we see a beautiful sunset or when we experience a "mini-miracle" in our day, we are acknowledging Him as the Lord of Creation.
We want our children to see that Jesus is not a character in a storybook who stayed in the book. He is the living, reigning King who is active in our lives right now. This realization shifts their perspective on obedience too. Instead of legalism, it becomes loyalty. We don't just "follow the rules"; we follow the King who gave His life for us because He is the only One who could, the perfect, divine Lamb of God.
Action: A Simple Way to Honor Jesus as King Today
Take a "King’s Walk" outside with your children today. As you walk, look for things that only God could create, the complexity of a leaf, the vastness of the sky, or the song of a bird. Every time you find something beautiful, say together: "Jesus is the King of this, too!" This simple practice helps children connect the Jesus they hear about in stories with the God who holds the world together. It builds a sense of awe and wonder that moves beyond simple head-knowledge.

Prayer: A Grounding Prayer for Parents
"Lord Jesus, thank You for being more than just a teacher. Thank You for being my Savior, my King, and my God. Sometimes I get caught up in the 'to-do' lists of parenting and I forget the wonder of who You are. Help me to show my children Your power and Your love today. May they find their security not in my strength, but in Your divine authority. Let our home be a place where Your name is honored above all others. Amen."
Family Question: The Dinner Table Conversation Starter
"If Jesus were just a regular teacher, how would our lives be different? Why is it better that He is actually the Son of God who can do anything?"

We invite you to dive deeper into these life-changing truths with us. Whether through our weekly podcasts or by joining one of our online Bible studies, there is a place for you here. Let’s grow together in the knowledge of our Lord and Savior.
