Have you ever felt like you were trying to run a marathon while breathing through a straw?
In our walk with God, many of us love Jesus deeply and believe the Word, yet we feel a bit "stuck" when it comes to sharing our faith or living out the Christian life with boldness. We have the map, and we have the destination, but sometimes it feels like the engine is just idling.
This brings us to the sixth Fundamental Truth of the Assemblies of God: The Baptism in the Holy Spirit.
At Boundless Online Church, we believe this isn’t just a dusty theological concept from the 1900s. It is a vibrant, life-changing promise available to every believer today. Whether you are working the night shift in a warehouse, caring for a loved one at home, or searching for answers in a part of the world where following Jesus is difficult, this "enduement of power" is for you.
What Exactly Is the Baptism in the Holy Spirit?
The simplest way to describe it is an "immersion."
When you look at the Greek word baptizo, it means to be submerged, overwhelmed, or fully plunged into something. While every believer receives the Holy Spirit the moment they put their trust in Jesus for salvation, the Baptism in the Holy Spirit is a distinct, subsequent experience.
Think of it like this: If salvation is like having a glass of water to sustain your life, the Baptism in the Holy Spirit is like being tossed into the middle of the ocean. It is an overflowing fullness.
In the Book of Acts, Jesus told His disciples to wait in Jerusalem for "the promise of the Father." These were men and women who already followed Him, already loved Him, and had already seen Him risen from the dead. Yet, Jesus knew they needed something more to accomplish the mission He was giving them.
He told them in Acts 1:8, "But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth."

Not Just for the "Super Christians"
One of the biggest misconceptions is that this experience is only for pastors, missionaries, or "extra holy" people.
The Truth is, this experience was the "normal" experience for the early Church. In the Book of Acts, we see everyday people: fishermen, tax collectors, and everyday citizens: being filled with the Spirit.
For us at Boundless, we see this as a vital tool for the modern world. If you are a digital creator trying to bring light to dark corners of the internet, or a parent trying to raise kids with a foundation of faith, you need that supernatural power.
This isn't about being better than anyone else. It’s about having the "gas in the tank" to go the distance. If you want to dive deeper into the foundation of our beliefs, you might find our post on Inspired Truth: The Gift of God’s Word helpful for understanding how we anchor everything in Scripture.
The Purpose: Power for Witnessing
Why does God give us this gift? Is it just so we can have a "spiritual high"?
While the experience is definitely faith-stirring, the primary purpose is service. The Baptism in the Holy Spirit provides:
Supernatural Boldness: The same Peter who denied Jesus three times out of fear became the man who stood before thousands and preached with such authority that 3,000 people were saved in one day.
A Deeper Love for the Lost: The Spirit shifts our perspective from our own needs to the needs of the world around us.
Gifts for Ministry: It opens the door to the "bestowment of the gifts," which are tools given by God to help build up the church and reach people in miraculous ways.
For those of you involved in our Digital Video and Photo Training, you know that having the right equipment matters. The Baptism in the Holy Spirit is like the "pro-grade" equipment for your soul. It doesn't change who you are at your core, but it gives you the capacity to do things you couldn't do on your own.
The Initial Physical Evidence
This is often the part where people have the most questions. In the Assemblies of God, we believe that the initial physical sign of the Baptism in the Holy Spirit is speaking in other tongues, as the Spirit gives utterance.
We see this pattern throughout the Book of Acts (Acts 2:4, 10:44-46, 19:6). When the Spirit fell, there was an outward, physical expression.
Why tongues? We believe it’s because the tongue is the most difficult part of the human body to tame. When we surrender our speech to God, it is a sign of total surrender to His Spirit. It is a beautiful, private prayer language that helps us communicate with God when words fail us.
However, it’s important to remember that tongues are the sign, but the fruit is power and love. We don't seek the sign; we seek the Giver of the gift.

Is It Different From Salvation?
Yes. We like to make this distinction very clear.
When you accept Jesus, the Holy Spirit works in you to bring about the "new birth." You are a child of God, and you are heaven-bound! The Baptism in the Holy Spirit is an additional gift.
Think of it like getting a new smartphone. When you get the phone, it’s yours. It works. You can make calls. But when you connect it to the high-speed 5G network, suddenly it has access to a whole new world of information, power, and capability. You had the phone before, but now you have the "connection" that allows it to operate at its full potential.
How to Receive the Promise
If you are reading this and thinking, "I want that," the good news is that Jesus is the Baptizer. You don’t have to "earn" it or be perfect. You simply have to be hungry for more of God.
Ask: Jesus said in Luke 11:13, "If you then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!"
Believe: Approach God with an expectant heart. Believe that this promise is for you, right where you are.
Surrender: Spend time in worship and prayer. Let go of your own control and ask the Holy Spirit to fill every corner of your life.
Wait and Receive: Sometimes it happens instantly; sometimes it happens during a time of quiet seeking.

A Lifetime of Reliance
Spirit baptism isn't a "one and done" event that you check off a list. It’s the beginning of a lifetime of increased reliance on God.
The early believers in Acts were filled in chapter 2, and then they prayed for boldness and were filled again in chapter 4. We need a daily "refilling." This is especially true for those of you in high-stress environments: maybe you are a caregiver feeling burnt out, or a shift worker trying to keep your light shining in a difficult workplace.
The Holy Spirit is called the "Comforter" and the "Helper" for a reason. He is there to walk with you through the mundane moments of life just as much as the miraculous ones.
Let’s Walk This Together
The Baptism in the Holy Spirit is a welcoming invitation from a Father who loves you. He doesn't want you to live the Christian life in your own strength. He wants to clothe you with power from on high.
Do you have questions about this? It’s okay to be curious or even a little skeptical. We believe God honors an honest heart. If you want to learn more about how we apply these truths in our daily lives, check out our blog page for more Deep Dives.
