Welcome back to our series, AG Truth Deep Dive. We are walking through the 16 Fundamental Truths of the Assemblies of God, exploring what we believe and: more importantly: why it matters for your daily life.
Today, we are looking at Truth #7: The Initial Physical Evidence of the Baptism in the Holy Spirit.
For some, this topic feels natural and exciting. For others, it might feel a bit mysterious or even intimidating. Whether you’ve been in church your whole life or you’re just starting to explore faith from a quiet breakroom on a night shift, we want to look at this with a clear mind and a welcoming heart.
At Boundless Online Church, we believe the Holy Spirit isn’t just a theological concept. He is a person, and His presence is tangible.
What is Truth #7?
The official statement of Truth #7 is simple but profound:
The baptism of believers in the Holy Spirit is witnessed by the initial physical sign of speaking with other tongues as the Spirit of God gives them utterance.
To understand this, we have to look back at our previous discussion on the Baptism in the Holy Spirit. If you missed that, you might find our post on the gift of God’s Word helpful for setting the foundation of how we view Scripture as our primary guide.
In short, the Baptism in the Holy Spirit is an experience following salvation where a believer is filled with God’s power for life and service. Truth #7 specifically addresses how we know that experience has happened.
Why Do We Need "Physical" Evidence?
In a world full of digital noise and abstract ideas, we often long for something real. We want to know that our spiritual experiences aren't just "all in our heads."
God understands our human nature. Throughout the Bible, He often provided physical signs for spiritual realities. Think of the rainbow for Noah, the burning bush for Moses, or even the water of baptism. These physical markers help us anchor our faith in something observable.
When it comes to the filling of the Holy Spirit, the Assemblies of God teaches that there is a specific, initial physical sign: speaking in tongues.

The Scriptural Pattern
When we look at the Book of Acts, we see a consistent pattern. The early believers didn't just "feel better" or "act nicer" after being filled with the Spirit: though those things certainly happened. There was an objective, audible sign.
Pentecost (Acts 2)
The most famous instance is the Day of Pentecost. The disciples were gathered in an upper room when the Spirit fell. Acts 2:4 says, "All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them."
The House of Cornelius (Acts 10)
Later, when Peter preached to the Gentiles, the Spirit fell on them too. How did the Jewish believers know it had happened? Acts 10:46 tells us: "For they heard them speaking in tongues and praising God."
The Ephesian Believers (Acts 19)
When Paul met a group of believers in Ephesus, he asked if they had received the Holy Spirit. After he laid hands on them, "the Holy Spirit came on them, and they spoke in tongues and prophesied" (Acts 19:6).
In each of these cases, the "evidence" that the baptism had occurred was the physical act of speaking in a language the speaker had never learned, as prompted by the Spirit.
Distinct from the "Gift of Tongues"
One area that often causes confusion is the difference between the initial physical evidence and the spiritual gift of tongues mentioned in 1 Corinthians 12.
At Boundless Online Church, we want to be clear:
The Initial Physical Evidence is the sign that accompanies the initial baptism in the Spirit. It is an experience available to every believer.
The Gift of Tongues is one of the spiritual gifts used in a public church setting for the edification of the body, usually requiring an interpretation.
Think of it like this: breathing is the initial sign of physical life. Everyone who is alive breathes. However, not everyone who breathes is a professional singer. In the same way, speaking in tongues is the "breath" of the Spirit-filled life, while the public gift of tongues is a specific "vocal performance" used as the Spirit wills for the benefit of others.
Why Tongues?
You might wonder, "Why tongues? Why not a bright light or a feeling of peace?"
While the Bible doesn't explicitly say "God chose tongues because...", many theologians point to the book of James. James tells us that the tongue is the most difficult part of the human body to tame. It is the rudder of our lives.
When we yield our speech: the very thing that defines our communication and will: to the Holy Spirit, it is a profound act of surrender. It is a physical manifestation of a spiritual reality: God is in control of our innermost being.

A Global Perspective
For our friends in unsafe areas or those who feel isolated, this truth is incredibly empowering. You don't need a special building, a choir, or a specific set of tools to experience this. Whether you are using modern tech tools to connect with church or praying in a quiet closet, the Holy Spirit is available to you.
The initial physical evidence is a personal confirmation. It’s a "receipt" from heaven that says the promise of the Father has been poured out on you. It provides a level of confidence that can sustain a believer through trials, persecution, and loneliness.
It’s Not the Destination; It’s the Gateway
It is important to remember that speaking in tongues is the initial evidence. It isn't the finish line of the Christian life.
The purpose of the Baptism in the Holy Spirit is power for witness. Truth #7 tells us how we know the power has arrived, but the goal is what we do with that power.
Are we sharing the Gospel? Are we living holy lives? Are we serving our communities?

How to Receive
If you haven't experienced the Baptism in the Holy Spirit with the initial physical evidence of speaking in tongues, don't feel pressured or anxious. God is a giver of good gifts.
Ask: Jesus said the Father gives the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him (Luke 11:13).
Believe: Receive it by faith, just as you received salvation.
Yield: As you pray, be willing to speak as the Spirit gives you the words. It is a cooperative effort: He provides the "utterance," but you provide the voice.
We are here to walk with you through this. This isn't just about a doctrine; it's about a relationship with the living God.

Common Questions
Does every Christian have to speak in tongues? In the Assemblies of God, we distinguish between being "born of the Spirit" (salvation) and being "baptized in the Spirit." Every believer has the Holy Spirit living within them, but we believe the baptism is a subsequent experience that is consistently evidenced by tongues in the New Testament.
What if I’ve prayed and nothing happened? Keep seeking! God isn't withholding from you. Sometimes we have barriers of fear or misunderstanding that need to be cleared away. Focus on worshipping Jesus, and let the Spirit move in His timing.
Is it always a real human language? Sometimes tongues are a known human language (as on the Day of Pentecost), and sometimes they are a "heavenly" language or a "language of angels" (as Paul mentions in 1 Corinthians 13). Either way, it is a language not known to the speaker.
