Bible Study: Assemblies of God Fundamental Truths Guide

The 16 Fundamental Truths of the Assemblies of God serve as a biblical roadmap for those seeking to understand the core doctrines of the Christian faith. These truths provide a clear, Scripture-based framework for salvation, the nature of God, the role of the Holy Spirit, and the promise of Christ's return, helping believers grow deeper in their relationship with Jesus.

In this guide, we will explore each of these 16 essential doctrines, providing the biblical foundation and practical meaning for every seeker. Whether you are new to the faith or a long-time believer, this overview will help you navigate the heart of what we believe at Boundless Online Church.

What Are the 16 Fundamental Truths?

For many seekers, walking into a conversation about "doctrine" or "theology" can feel a little overwhelming. You might find yourself asking, "Where do I even start?" or "What do these people actually believe?" The Assemblies of God Fundamental Truths are not meant to be a barrier or a list of rules; rather, they are a shared understanding of what the Bible teaches us about life, God, and our future. They are the anchor points that keep our community grounded in the Gospel while we navigate a changing world.

These truths are divided into several key categories: the nature of God and His Word, the work of Jesus Christ, the experience of the believer, the mission of the Church, and the finality of God's plan for eternity. By studying these truths, you aren't just learning facts; you are encountering the heart of a Savior who loves you. If you want to dive deeper into these topics with others, we invite you to join our Bible Study Club, where we explore these scriptures together every week.

Bible Study: The Word of God

1. The Scriptures Inspired

The first and most vital truth is that the Bible is the inspired Word of God. We believe the Old and New Testaments are the infallible, authoritative rule of faith and conduct. This means the Bible isn't just a historical book; it is God’s living revelation to humanity. As written in 2 Timothy 3:16, "All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness." When you read the Bible, you are hearing from the Creator of the universe. To learn how to start your daily reading, check out our post on how to read the Bible and actually understand it.

2. The One True God

We believe there is only one true God who has revealed Himself as the eternal "I AM," the Creator of heaven and earth. While He is one Being, He exists in three persons: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. This is often called the Trinity. This relationship within God Himself shows us that God is, at His core, relational. He created you for a relationship with Him. As Deuteronomy 6:4 reminds us, "Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one."

3. The Deity of the Lord Jesus Christ

Jesus Christ is the eternal Son of God. He is fully God and fully man. The Scriptures declare His virgin birth, His sinless life, His miracles, His substitutionary work on the cross, His bodily resurrection from the dead, and His exaltation to the right hand of God. Jesus is the bridge between us and the Father. "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God" (John 1:1). If you've ever wondered, "Can I know God personally?", the answer is found in Jesus.

4. The Fall of Man

Humanity was created good and upright, for God said, "Let us make mankind in our image" (Genesis 1:26). However, by voluntary transgression, humanity fell into sin. This fall brought not only physical death but also spiritual death, which is separation from God. This is why we feel a "restlessness" or a "void" in our lives, it is a longing to be reunited with our Creator. Recognizing our need for a Savior is the first step toward finding peace.

5. The Salvation of Man

The fifth truth is the most beautiful: Salvation. Man's only hope of redemption is through the shed blood of Jesus Christ, the Son of God. Salvation is received through repentance toward God and faith toward the Lord Jesus Christ. It is a free gift of grace; you cannot earn it by being "good enough." As Ephesians 2:8-9 states, "For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith, and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God." For more on this, read our detailed guide on what salvation really means.

6. The Ordinances of the Church

The Assemblies of God recognizes two primary ordinances: Water Baptism and Holy Communion. Water baptism by immersion is a public declaration of a believer's identification with Christ in His death and resurrection. Holy Communion, or the Lord’s Supper, is a symbolic remembrance of Christ’s suffering and death for our salvation. These acts are outward signs of an inward transformation.

Bible Study: The Power of the Spirit

7. The Baptism in the Holy Spirit

All believers are entitled to and should ardently expect and earnestly seek the promise of the Father, the baptism in the Holy Spirit. This was the normal experience of all in the early Christian Church. With it comes the enduement of power for life and service, the bestowment of the gifts and their uses in the work of the ministry. "But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses... to the ends of the earth" (Acts 1:8). Discover more about the person and power of the Holy Spirit here.

8. The Initial Physical Evidence of the Baptism in the Holy Spirit

The baptism of believers in the Holy Spirit is witnessed by the initial physical sign of speaking with other tongues as the Spirit of God gives them utterance. This experience is distinct from and subsequent to the experience of the new birth. While this is a unique Pentecostal doctrine, its purpose is always to empower the believer to share the love of Jesus more effectively.

9. Sanctification

Sanctification is an act of separation from that which is evil, and of dedication unto God. It is both a moment-in-time declaration (we are made holy in Christ) and a progressive, lifelong process as we grow to be more like Jesus. "May God himself, the God of peace, sanctify you through and through" (1 Thessalonians 5:23). It is about the Holy Spirit changing our hearts from the inside out.

Bible Study: The Church and Its Mission

10. The Church and Its Mission

The Church is the Body of Christ, the habitation of God through the Spirit. Every believer, born of the Spirit, is an integral part of the General Assembly and Church of the Firstborn. The mission of the Church is to be an agency of God for evangelizing the world, a corporate body in which man may worship God, and a channel of God’s purpose to build a body of saints being perfected in the image of His Son. You are not meant to walk this journey alone. You belong in a community that cares for you.

11. The Ministry

A divinely called and scripturally ordained ministry has been provided by our Lord for a fourfold purpose: the evangelization of the world, the worship of God, the building up of a body of saints being perfected in the image of His Son, and meeting human need with ministries of love and compassion. At Boundless, we believe every member is a minister in their own sphere of influence.

12. Divine Healing

Divine healing is an integral part of the gospel. Deliverance from sickness is provided for in the atonement and is the privilege of all believers. "He himself bore our sins in his body on the cross, so that we might die to sins and live for righteousness; by his wounds you have been healed" (1 Peter 2:24). If you are in need of healing, whether physical, emotional, or spiritual, please submit a prayer request to our Prayer Wall. We would love to stand with you in faith.

Bible Study: Our Blessed Hope

13. The Blessed Hope

The resurrection of those who have fallen asleep in Christ and their translation together with those who are alive and remain unto the coming of the Lord is the imminent and blessed hope of the Church. We believe that Jesus is coming back for His people. This truth gives us courage in difficult times, knowing that this world is not our final home. "For the Lord himself will come down from heaven, with a loud command... and the dead in Christ will rise first" (1 Thessalonians 4:16).

14. The Millennial Reign of Christ

The second coming of Christ includes the rapture of the saints, which is our blessed hope, followed by the visible return of Christ with His saints to reign on earth for one thousand years. This millennial reign will bring the salvation of national Israel and the establishment of universal peace. It is the fulfillment of God’s promise to restore all things.

15. The Final Judgment

There will be a final judgment in which the wicked dead will be raised and judged according to their works. Whosoever is not found written in the Book of Life, together with the devil and his angels, the beast and the false prophet, will be consigned to the everlasting punishment in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone, which is the second death. While this is a sobering truth, it underscores the vital importance of the gift of salvation offered through Jesus.

16. The New Heavens and the New Earth

Finally, we look forward to the "new heavens and a new earth, where righteousness dwells" (2 Peter 3:13). God will make all things new, and His people will dwell in His presence forever, free from pain, sorrow, and death. This is the ultimate "Welcome Home" for every seeker who has found their way back to God. Revelation 21:4 promises, "He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain."

How These Truths Change Your Daily Life

Doctrine can often feel like it belongs in a textbook, but these 16 truths are designed to be lived out. When you understand that God is the "One True God" (Truth 2), your anxiety begins to fade because you know who is in control. When you realize that "Salvation" is a gift (Truth 5), your shame is replaced by the joy of being loved exactly as you are. When you lean into "Divine Healing" (Truth 12), you find hope in the midst of physical or emotional pain.

At Boundless Online Church, we don't just want you to know these facts; we want you to experience the Person behind them. Jesus Christ is the center of every one of these truths. He is the Word made flesh, the Savior of the world, the Baptizer in the Holy Spirit, the Healer, and the Soon-Coming King. You are seen by Him. You are loved by Him. You are not forgotten, and in this community, you are never alone.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the most important fundamental truth?

While all 16 truths are essential for a complete biblical worldview, Truth 5 (The Salvation of Man) is the central turning point. Without the salvation provided by Jesus Christ, our relationship with God cannot be restored. It is the "gate" through which we enter into all other spiritual blessings.

Do I have to believe all 16 to be a Christian?

To become a Christian, the Bible says we must confess with our mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in our heart that God raised Him from the dead (Romans 10:9). These 16 truths are a summary of what the Bible teaches to help us grow and stay unified in our faith as a church body.

Is the Assemblies of God the only church with these beliefs?

Many Christian denominations share these core biblical beliefs, particularly regarding the Trinity, the deity of Christ, and salvation by grace. The emphasis on the Baptism in the Holy Spirit and divine healing is a hallmark of Pentecostal theology, which we believe is a vital part of the full Gospel message.

How can I study these truths more deeply?

The best way to study is to look up the scripture references provided for each truth. We also highly recommend joining our Bible Study Club or checking out our Ultimate Guide to the 16 Fundamental Truths for a deeper dive into the theology behind them.
