Bible Study: How Can God Be Three Persons in One?

God is one God, not three gods, and Scripture reveals Him as three distinct Persons: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. This truth stretches our minds, but it does not contradict the Bible. The Trinity shows us one holy God who eternally lives in perfect love, unity, and relationship.

Deuteronomy 6:4 says, “Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one.” That is our starting point. Christians do not believe in three separate gods. We believe in one true God.

At the same time, Scripture shows the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit as distinct Persons. At Jesus’ baptism, the Son stood in the water, the Spirit descended like a dove, and the Father spoke from heaven (Matthew 3:16-17). In Matthew 28:19, Jesus told His followers to baptize “in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.” One name. Three Persons.

A simple analogy can help, even if no analogy explains God perfectly. Think about the sun: the sun itself, the light that shines from it, and the heat you feel from it. They are distinguishable, yet not separate suns. In a similar way, the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit are distinct Persons, yet one God. Every analogy has limits, so we hold it loosely, but it can help us avoid the mistake of thinking Christians worship three gods.

This matters more than some people realize. The Trinity is not just a hard doctrine for theologians. It shows us that God is relational, loving, and active in our lives. The Father sent the Son to save us. The Son gave Himself for us. The Holy Spirit lives in believers, comforts us, and helps us grow. The one true God is not distant from you.

If this still feels mysterious, that is okay. Some truths are meant to lead us into worship, not just analysis. You do not have to explain every detail perfectly to trust the God who has revealed Himself in Scripture. You can come to the Father through Jesus, and the Holy Spirit will help you know Him more deeply.

Lord, thank You for revealing Yourself in Scripture as one God—Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Help us trust what Your Word says, even when it stretches our understanding. Lead us into deeper worship, deeper faith, and deeper love for You. In Jesus’ name, amen.
