Bible Study: What Is Holy Spirit Baptism?

The baptism in the Holy Spirit is a distinct spiritual experience following salvation that empowers believers for witnessing and effective service. According to Assemblies of God doctrine, this gift is witnessed by the initial physical sign of speaking in other tongues as the Spirit gives utterance.

If you’ve been around First Assembly Memphis or joined us on Boundless Online Church lately, you’ve probably heard us talk about the "Holy Spirit." Maybe you’ve seen people praying with a unique intensity, or you’ve heard someone mention "the baptism." If you're new to the Pentecostal faith, or just curious about what makes our community in the 901 tick, it’s totally normal to have questions.

In the Assemblies of God (AG) tradition, the baptism in the Holy Spirit isn't just a theological footnote; it's one of our four "cardinal doctrines." It’s a core part of who we are. But what does it actually mean for your daily life in Memphis, Cordova, or wherever you’re tuning in from?

Understanding the Terms: A Quick Definition

Before we dive into the "why" and "how," let’s clarify what we’re talking about.

Definition Block: Baptism in the Holy Spirit A spiritual experience, separate from and subsequent to the experience of the new birth (salvation), where the believer is "filled" with the Holy Spirit. This experience provides the believer with power for Christian living and bold witnessing for Jesus Christ.

Why Does This Matter?

You might be thinking, "I’ve already accepted Jesus. Isn’t that enough?"

Absolutely, salvation is the foundation of everything. When you follow Jesus, the Holy Spirit comes to dwell within you. However, the baptism in the Holy Spirit is often described as the Spirit coming upon you. Think of it like this: if salvation is like having a glass of water to sustain your life, Spirit baptism is like being plunged into a rushing river. Both involve water, but the second one is about being immersed in power for a specific purpose.

The Scriptural Blueprint

We don’t just make this stuff up because it feels good. We anchor it in the Word of God. The early Church in the book of Acts lived in the reality of this power every single day.

  • The Promise (Acts 1:4-5, 8): Jesus told His followers to wait for the "Promise of the Father." He said, "But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth."

  • The Fulfillment (Acts 2:4): On the Day of Pentecost, the believers were gathered together when the Spirit fell. "All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them."

  • The Pattern (Acts 10 & 19): This wasn't a one-time event. Whether it was in a house in Caesarea or on the streets of Ephesus, when people believed in Jesus, they often sought and received this "filling" that was accompanied by speaking in tongues.

In our Mission and Vision, we emphasize being a Spirit-led church because we believe we cannot fulfill the Great Commission in our own strength. We need that "Acts 1:8" power to reach the 901 and the nations.

Initial Physical Evidence: Let’s Talk About Tongues

This is usually the part where people have the most questions. Truth #8 of the Assemblies of God 16 Fundamental Truths states that the baptism in the Holy Spirit is witnessed by the "initial physical sign of speaking with other tongues."

In simple terms, we believe that when a person is baptized in the Holy Spirit, the first outward sign is that they speak in a language they haven't learned. It’s a supernatural sign that confirms the internal work God is doing.

Is it scary? Not at all. Is it forced? Never. It is a beautiful, personal overflow of a heart that is being filled to capacity by God’s love and power. While every believer is "entitled to and should ardently expect" this experience, it is a gift, not a requirement for going to heaven.

Living it Out in the 901

Whether you're grabbing BBQ in Midtown or heading to a game at the Forum, being "Spirit-filled" isn't about staying inside the four walls of a church. It’s about how you treat your neighbor in Cordova or how you pray for your city.

In Memphis, we face big challenges. We deal with crime, poverty, and broken families. We also have a city full of creativity, soul, and potential. The baptism in the Holy Spirit gives us the "oomph" to be light in dark places. It gives us the courage to speak up for the hurting and the strength to keep loving when things get tough.

A Global Bridge: Boundless Online Church

We know that not everyone reading this is in Memphis. Some of you are halfway across the world, or maybe you're homebound or traveling. That’s why we created Boundless Online Church.

Spirit baptism is "boundless." The Holy Spirit isn't limited by your zip code or your internet speed. We’ve seen people receive the baptism in their living rooms while watching a stream. We’ve seen prayer requests for the "filling of the Spirit" come in from every continent.

If you are looking for a community that believes in the present-day power of God, no matter where you are, you have a seat at our table. Check out our blog for more stories of how God is moving globally.

How to Seek the Baptism

If you're feeling a tug on your heart to experience this for yourself, here are three simple steps:

  1. Ask with Faith: Luke 11:13 says, "If you then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!"

  2. Surrender: Spend time in worship. Let go of distractions. Tell the Lord you are an open vessel.

  3. Receive: Don’t try to work it up. Just receive it. If you feel the prompting to speak words that aren't your own, step out in faith and let the Spirit give you utterance.

Mastery Starts with a Step

Mastering your faith doesn't mean you have all the answers. It means you are consistently walking with the One who does. Whether you are brand new to faith or have been following Jesus for decades, there is always "more" of God to experience.

What is one area of your life where you feel you need more "power" or "boldness" today?
