Bible Study: Who Is Jesus?

Walking into a conversation about faith can feel like jumping into a movie halfway through, everyone seems to know the plot, the characters, and the "insider" language, while you’re just trying to figure out who the main character actually is.

Who is Jesus according to the Assemblies of God?

Jesus Christ is the eternal Son of God, fully divine and fully human. He is the Savior who died for our sins, the Healer of our brokenness, the Baptizer in the Holy Spirit, and the soon-coming King who will return to make all things new.

Understanding Jesus isn't just about memorizing historical facts or theological bullet points; it’s about meeting a Person who changes everything. At First Assembly Memphis, we believe that knowing Jesus is the foundation for a life of purpose, peace, and power. Whether you are joining us from the 901 or connecting globally via Boundless Online Church, this guide is your roadmap to mastering the core truths about Christ.

The Deity of the Lord Jesus Christ

The first thing you need to know is that Jesus isn't just a "good teacher" or a "moral example." In the Assemblies of God (AG), we affirm His deity. This means He has always existed as part of the Trinity (Father, Son, and Holy Spirit). He was born of a virgin, lived a sinless life, performed miracles, and physically rose from the dead.

Definition: The Deity of Christ The biblical truth that Jesus is 100% God and 100% man. He is not a created being, but the Creator who entered time to rescue humanity.

The Need for a Savior: The Fall of Man

Why did Jesus have to come? To put it simply: we were lost. The Bible teaches that humanity chose to go its own way, creating a gap between us and a holy God. This "fall" brought sin and death into the world. But God, in His immense love, didn't leave us there. He sent Jesus to be the bridge.

Definition: Salvation Salvation is God's free gift of forgiveness and eternal life, received by repenting of sin and placing faith in Jesus Christ's sacrifice on the cross. It is not earned by good works, but by grace alone.

The Four Cardinal Doctrines

While the Assemblies of God holds to 16 Fundamental Truths, there are four "cardinal" (or essential) doctrines that define our view of Jesus:

  1. Jesus as Savior: He provides the only way to be right with God.

  2. Jesus as Healer: He still heals the sick today, physically, emotionally, and spiritually.

  3. Jesus as Baptizer: He empowers us with the Holy Spirit.

  4. Jesus as Coming King: He is returning to earth soon.

Empowerment for Your Daily Life

Many people think faith is just about where you go when you die. But Jesus said He came so we could have life "to the full" right now (John 10:10). This happens through the work of the Holy Spirit.

Definition: Baptism in the Holy Spirit A distinct experience following salvation where a believer is filled with God's power for witnessing and service. In the AG tradition, the initial physical evidence of this is speaking in tongues.
Definition: Sanctification The lifelong, progressive process of being set apart from evil and becoming more like Jesus in character and action through the power of the Spirit.

5 Steps to Mastering the Truth About Christ

If you’re ready to take a step closer to Jesus, here is a practical checklist to get you started:

  1. Read the Gospel of John: It’s the best place to see Jesus’ heart and identity firsthand.

  2. Ask the Hard Questions: Don't be afraid of doubt. Jesus welcomed skeptics like Thomas.

  3. Find a Local Community: If you're in Memphis, Bartlett, or Cordova, visit us at FA Memphis.

  4. Pray Simply: You don't need fancy words. Just talk to Him.

  5. Look for the Fruit: As you follow Jesus, notice how your peace, patience, and love begin to grow.

Life Takeaway

Jesus is not a distant figure in a dusty book; He is a living Lord who wants to walk through your Monday mornings, your family struggles, and your biggest dreams with you. Understanding "Who He Is" is the first step toward discovering "Who You Are" in Him.
