Bible Study: Who Is Jesus Christ?

Jul 24
6 min read

Jesus Christ is the Son of God, fully divine and fully human, who entered human history to restore the broken relationship between humanity and the Creator. He is the Savior who offered His life for the forgiveness of sins and the living Lord who rose from the dead, offering eternal life and hope to everyone who believes in Him.

This study explores the historical evidence for Jesus' existence, His unique identity as revealed in Scripture, and the life-changing impact of having a personal relationship with Him today.

The Historical Reality of Jesus

To understand who Jesus is, we must first address a fundamental question: Did He really exist? While many people view Jesus primarily through a religious lens, He is also a firmly established figure of secular history. Virtually all professional historians of antiquity, regardless of their personal faith, agree that Jesus of Nazareth was a real person who lived in first-century Galilee.

One of the most compelling pieces of evidence is the sheer volume of manuscript documentation. In historical studies, the reliability of a person or event is often measured by the number of surviving manuscripts and the proximity of those writings to the original events. For example, there are roughly 251 surviving manuscripts of the works of Julius Caesar, with the earliest dating nearly 1,000 years after his death. In contrast, there are over 25,000 surviving manuscripts of the New Testament, some of which date to within decades of the original writing.

The Historical Evidence for Jesus

Beyond Christian writings, non-Christian historians also recorded His life and impact. The Jewish historian Flavius Josephus, writing around 93 AD, mentioned Jesus in his work Antiquities of the Jews, identifying Him as a wise man and a teacher. Similarly, the Roman historian Tacitus, writing in the early second century, confirmed that "Christus" suffered the extreme penalty under Pontius Pilate during the reign of Tiberius (Annals 15.44). These independent accounts provide a solid historical foundation for the man we call Jesus.

The Mystery of the Incarnation: Fully God and Fully Man

While history confirms His existence, Scripture reveals His unique identity. The Bible teaches the doctrine of the Incarnation, the profound truth that God became a human being. In John 1:1, we read, "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God." Then, verse 14 explains the miracle: "The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us."

Jesus was not a "junior God" or merely a highly enlightened man. He is "the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation" (Colossians 1:15). This means that when we look at Jesus, we are looking at the character, heart, and nature of God Himself. He displayed divine power over nature, sickness, and even death, yet He experienced the full range of human emotions and physical needs. He felt hunger, fatigue, sorrow, and pain.

The Incarnation of Jesus Christ

Why does this matter to you? Because Jesus is fully human, He understands exactly what you are going through. He has felt the weight of loneliness, the sting of betrayal, and the burden of physical exhaustion. Because He is fully God, He has the power to save you, heal you, and transform your life. He is the bridge that spans the gap between our human frailty and God’s infinite holiness.

The Mission of the Messiah: Savior and Redeemer

Jesus did not come merely to be a moral teacher or a social revolutionary. He came with a specific mission: to seek and to save the lost. The title "Christ" is not Jesus' last name; it is His title, meaning "Anointed One" or "Messiah." For centuries, the Jewish people had awaited a promised King who would deliver them. Jesus fulfilled this promise, but not in the way many expected.

Instead of leading a military rebellion, Jesus led a spiritual revolution. He addressed the root cause of all human suffering: sin. Sin is the barrier that keeps us from experiencing the fullness of God's love and purpose. Jesus, being the only human to ever live a perfect, sinless life, took our place on the cross. He paid the debt we owed so that we could be forgiven.

Colossians 1:19-20 tells us, "For God was pleased to have all his fullness dwell in him, and through him to reconcile to himself all things... by making peace through his blood, shed on the cross." This reconciliation is a gift. It isn't something we earn through good works or religious rituals; it is something we receive through faith in what Jesus has already done for us.

More Than a Concept: A Living Person

One of the most important things to understand about Jesus is that He is not just a figure trapped in the pages of history or a theological concept to be debated. He is a living person. The central claim of the Christian faith is the Resurrection, that Jesus rose from the grave three days after His death.

The Resurrection changed everything. It validated His claims to divinity and proved that death had been defeated. Today, Jesus is at the right hand of the Father, and through the Holy Spirit, He is present with us. He doesn't want you to just know *about* Him; He wants you to *know* Him.

Jesus said, "I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me" (John 14:6). This invitation is personal. He knows your name, your history, your fears, and your hopes. He is knocking at the door of your heart, waiting for you to invite Him in. He offers a peace that the world cannot give, a peace that transcends our circumstances.

The Personal Invitation of Jesus

What Difference Does Jesus Make Today?

In a world filled with "noise" and digital isolation, the message of Jesus provides a steady anchor. According to the Pew Research Center, over 2.4 billion people globally identify as Christians, making it the world's largest faith. While statistics show the scale of His influence, the true impact is seen in individual lives, lives transformed from addiction to freedom, from despair to hope, and from loneliness to community.

Jesus is the answer to the loneliness and anxiety that so many feel today. When you realize that you are seen and loved by the Creator of the universe, your perspective changes. You are no longer defined by your past mistakes or your current struggles. You are defined by the love of Jesus Christ.

A Pastoral Prayer for You

Lord Jesus, I thank You that You are not a distant God, but a God who came near. I thank You for Your sacrifice on the cross and Your victory over death. I pray for the person reading this right now. If they feel lonely, remind them they are never alone. If they feel confused, lead them into Your truth. Open their heart to experience Your love and Your presence in a tangible way today. May they know the peace that only You can provide. Amen.

Frequently Asked Questions About Jesus

Is there proof that Jesus was real? Yes. In addition to the Bible, several non-Christian historical sources from the first and second centuries: including Flavius Josephus and Tacitus: confirm Jesus' life and crucifixion under Pontius Pilate.

Was Jesus just a good moral teacher? Jesus claimed to be the Son of God and the Savior of the world. As C.S. Lewis famously argued, if His claims were false, He was either a liar or a lunatic. But if His claims were true, He is the Lord of all.

How can I start a relationship with Jesus? A relationship with Jesus begins with a simple prayer. Acknowledge that you need Him, believe that He died for your sins and rose again, and invite Him to be the Lord of your life. He is ready to meet you right where you are.

What does "Messiah" mean? Messiah is a Hebrew word (translated as "Christ" in Greek) that means "Anointed One." It refers to the promised Savior whom God sent to redeem humanity.
