Boundless Daily: Called to Serve and Lead

Today, we are diving into a topic that sounds a little formal but is actually one of the most exciting parts of our faith journey: The Ministry. In the Assemblies of God, this is our 11th Fundamental Truth. Now, don't let the word "Fundamental Truth" or even "The Ministry" make you think this is only for people who wear suits on Sundays or have "Pastor" on their business cards.

When we talk about the ministry, we’re talking about a divine calling to serve and lead that involves every single one of us in different ways. It’s about how God equips people to help the rest of us meet Jesus and grow in our faith.

It’s a Divine "Nudge"

Have you ever felt a tug on your heart to do something more? Maybe you saw someone struggling and felt an overwhelming urge to help, or perhaps you’ve felt a pull to share a word of encouragement with a stranger. That "tug" is often the beginning of what we call a divine calling.

Truth #11 tells us that a divinely called and scripturally ordained ministry has been provided by our Lord. This means that leadership in the church isn't just a career choice like becoming an accountant or a graphic designer. It’s a response to a specific invitation from God.

But here’s the beautiful part: while some are called to full-time leadership roles, the purpose of those leaders is to empower everyone to serve. If you’re a stay-at-home parent, a student, or working a late-shift job, you have a ministry. Your "pulpit" might be a breakroom, a hospital bedside, or a Zoom call.

The Fourfold Purpose of Ministry

Why did God set up this system of leadership and service? It wasn't just to keep the church doors open (or the website running). There is a very specific, fourfold purpose behind it. Let’s break those down in a way that makes sense for our lives today.

1. Evangelizing the World

The first job of the ministry is to lead the Church in reaching people who don't know Jesus yet. At Boundless, we say it all the time: We help people meet Jesus and grow in faith online.

This isn't about being pushy or judgmental. It’s about sharing the best news we’ve ever heard. For a global community like ours, this is huge. We have friends joining us from places where a traditional church building doesn't exist. The ministry of evangelism means using every tool we have, technology, social media, and simple conversation, to let people know they are loved by God.

2. Worshiping God

The second purpose is to lead the Church in worship. Worship isn't just about the music or the songs we sing on a Sunday morning. It’s a lifestyle. A scripturally ordained ministry helps us keep our focus on God.

When life gets heavy, maybe you’re caring for a loved one in hospice or you’re feeling isolated in a city where you don't know anyone, it’s easy to lose sight of God’s goodness. Leaders in ministry help redirect our gaze back to Him. They remind us that He is worthy of our praise, no matter our circumstances. 3. Building the Body

The third purpose is "building a body of saints being perfected in the image of His Son." That sounds pretty fancy, but it just means helping each other grow up spiritually.

None of us have it all figured out. We’re all works in progress. The ministry is there to provide the "tools" we need to become more like Jesus. This happens through teaching, Bible studies, and honest community. It’s about moving from "I just started following Jesus" to "I am actively helping others follow Him too."

4. Meeting Human Needs

The final purpose is perhaps the most practical: meeting human needs with ministries of love and compassion. Jesus didn't just preach; He healed the sick, fed the hungry, and stood up for the lonely.

A true ministry of God is always marked by kindness. It looks like a phone call to someone who is grieving, a meal for a neighbor, or even a text message of prayer. We are called to be the hands and feet of Jesus in a world that is often cold and indifferent. This is a huge part of what we do through our Outreach and Service efforts.

Ministry for the "Rest of Us"

If you’re a shift worker, someone living with a disability, or someone who can’t get to a physical church building, you might feel like you’re on the sidelines of "the ministry." But Truth #11 reminds us that the ministry exists for the body.

If you are part of the body of Christ, the ministry is there to serve you, and you are called to serve others. You don't need a stage. You just need a heart that says, "Lord, use me where I am."

Maybe your ministry is being the person who actually listens when a coworker says they’re having a bad day. Maybe it’s being a faithful "digital missionary" who shares encouraging content with friends who are struggling. Whatever it is, it matters.

Why This Matters for You Right Now

You might be wondering, "Okay, Penny, this is great, but what do I do with it?"

First, recognize that if you feel a desire to lead or serve, that’s likely God talking to you. Don't brush it off. You don't have to be perfect to be used by Him. In fact, most of the people God used in the Bible were pretty "messy" individuals who just said yes.

Second, look for ways to get involved in community. Ministry doesn't happen in a vacuum. We need each other. Whether it's joining an online Bible study or just engaging in the comments on our blog, connecting with other believers helps sharpen your own calling.
