Life moves fast. Between the notifications on our phones, the demands of work, and the quiet anxieties that creep in late at night, the world is incredibly loud. It often feels like we are standing in the middle of a crowded room, trying to hear a whisper from someone on the other side.
If you’ve ever felt like you’re walking through life on your own, trying to make the right decisions but unsure if you’re actually heading in the right direction, you aren't alone. We all want a guide. We all want to know that the steps we take are meaningful.
The good news is that we weren't meant to do this solo. God hasn't left us to figure it out by ourselves. He has given us a Guide, a Comforter, and a Teacher: The Holy Spirit.
Learning to hear God’s voice isn't about having a special "super-spiritual" talent. It’s about a relationship. It’s about learning to recognize the lead of the Spirit in the middle of your daily life.
The Promise of the Helper
In the Assemblies of God, we believe in the 16 Fundamental Truths, and one of the most beautiful aspects of our faith is the promise of the Holy Spirit. Jesus told His disciples that it was actually better for Him to go away so that the Helper could come.
Think about that for a second. Jesus, the Savior of the world, said it was better for us to have the Holy Spirit living within us.
The Holy Spirit isn't just a "vibe" or a distant force. He is the third person of the Trinity. He is God with us, right here, right now. Whether you are a shift worker finishing a long night, a caregiver at a bedside, or someone seeking God from a place where it isn't safe to go to a physical church building, the Spirit is present with you.
We believe that all believers are entitled to and should ardently expect and earnestly seek the promise of the Father: the baptism in the Holy Spirit. This experience is distinct from and subsequent to the experience of the new birth. It brings an endowment of power for life and service.
If you’ve ever wondered about this, you might find our post on what the initial evidence of the baptism in the Holy Spirit is helpful. It’s a gift meant to empower you to live the life God has called you to live.

Tuning Your Heart to His Frequency
So, how do we actually hear Him? If God is speaking, why does it sometimes feel so quiet?
Hearing God’s voice is a lot like tuning an old radio. The signal is being broadcast, but if we are tuned to the wrong frequency, all we hear is static. To hear the Spirit’s lead, we have to intentionally tune our hearts.
1. Ground Yourself in the Word
God will never tell you something that contradicts His Word. The Bible is the ultimate filter for everything we think we hear. If you feel a "nudge" to do something that goes against the character of God revealed in Scripture, that nudge isn't from the Holy Spirit.
The Bible is "the inspired Word of God, a revelation from God to man, the infallible rule of faith and conduct." When we read it, we aren't just reading history; we are learning the language of God. The more you know the Book, the easier it is to recognize the Author's voice when He speaks to your heart.
2. Practice the "Quiet"
We live in a world that fears silence. We fill every gap with music, podcasts, or scrolling. But often, the Spirit speaks in a "still, small voice."
Try taking five minutes today: just five: to sit in silence. You don't have to say anything. Just say, "Lord, I’m listening." You might not hear an audible voice, but you might feel a sense of peace, a reminder of a scripture, or a burden for someone else.
3. Look for the "Nudges"
The Spirit often leads through "holy nudges." It’s that sudden thought to call a friend you haven't talked to in months. It’s the feeling that you should stop and pray for the person in line in front of you. It’s the sense of "wait" when you’re about to make a big purchase.
As you act on these small leads, you’ll find that your "spiritual ears" get sharper. You start to recognize the difference between your own random thoughts and the leading of the Spirit.

Is It God, Me, or Something Else?
One of the biggest questions people ask is: "How do I know it’s God?"
This is where discernment comes in. The Spirit’s lead always produces "fruit." Does the direction you feel led to take align with love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control?
God’s voice doesn't drive us with fear or condemnation. The Spirit convicts us of sin to lead us to repentance, but He doesn't shame us. His voice draws us closer to Jesus. If the "voice" you’re hearing is making you feel hopeless or worthless, that is not the Holy Spirit.

The Ultimate Goal: Meeting Jesus
The primary job of the Holy Spirit is to point us to Jesus. Everything the Spirit does: the gifts, the leading, the comforting: is designed to help us know Christ better and make Him known to others.
This is the heart of the Gospel. We believe that man was created good and upright, but by voluntary transgression, he fell and thereby incurred not only physical death but also spiritual death, which is separation from God.
But God loved us too much to leave us there. He sent His Son, Jesus, to live a perfect life, die on a cross for our sins, and rise again three days later.
Salvation isn't something you earn by being "good enough" or hearing God's voice perfectly. It’s a gift received through repentance toward God and faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. When you accept that gift, the Holy Spirit comes to dwell within you. You become a new creation.
If you’ve never taken that step, or if you feel like you’ve wandered far away, you can start today. You don't need a special building or a perfect prayer. You just need a heart that says, "Jesus, I need You. Thank You for saving me. Lead me."

Walking It Out Online
In our digital age, many people wonder, “Can I really grow in faith if I can’t attend church in person?”. The answer is a resounding yes. The Holy Spirit isn't limited by geography or physical walls.
Whether you are watching a stream, reading a blog post like this, or connecting with others in a digital group, the Spirit is active. He can move through a screen just as powerfully as He moves through a cathedral. We are a community bound together not by a zip code, but by the Spirit of God.
A Step of Faith
Hearing God's voice is a journey. Some days the lead will feel clear as day. Other days, you’ll have to walk by faith, trusting the last thing He told you until He speaks again.
Don't be discouraged if you don't "feel" something spectacular every day. The Spirit is often a steady, quiet presence that guides us through the mundane moments. He is interested in your career choices, your parenting, your struggles with health, and your quietest hopes.
If you find yourself in a place where you need someone to stand with you in prayer, we are here. Sometimes hearing God’s voice is easier when someone else is listening with you. You can find more info on where to start if you need prayer here.
We want to invite you to take a moment today to simply ask the Holy Spirit to lead your next step. He is faithful, and He loves to guide His children.

What is the Spirit saying to you today? Are you feeling a nudge toward a specific person or a specific change in your life? We’d love for you to reflect on that. Faith isn't just about what we know; it’s about Who we follow.
